CLASS BISTORT Ws ars ths 8snlors of Fori Mssds High School, ths class of '49. It has bsen a long hard struggle but no ws ars facing ths snd. Though many hare fallen along ths way, 1st us give a cheer for those who have finished ths task. In September of 1937, ws were Just beginning this stiff Journey with ths help of Dorothy Palmer (Oabriel) and Ylrglnia Lewis (Marsh). Ws thought ws were big then, but now ws can see ths changes ws hare made, from tiny tots to dignified seniors. September of 1945 found us in high school where ws discovered ws had to learn many new ways. Xlbert Jones fas elected president, and we had a very successful year—includ- ing Rat Day . The Sophomores even marched us up town at noon. A year passed, we became Sophomores. Again we eleoted Xlbert Jones as our president. Bow we had to start thinking of how to maks money for next year. Ve sponsored the Sunny South Coartet . This was a success so we Journeyed on into the Junior class feeling proud or our accomplishments. Jolly Juniors that we were, Xlbert was again elected president. This had becoms a habit. He certainly filled the post with credit. We ordered and received our class rings. Mow we really thought we were SOMEBODY. For the Junior play, we presented Angel Iratet. Tsry interesting, no? Just ask those who sm it 1 Again we made money on an Xaster cake which Mrs. J. 1. Grant baked for us. Then came the ni t for which we had long waited, the Junior-Senior Banquet. This was held on May 7th at the Yacht and Country Club located on Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland. The theme being Smooth Sailing , we decorated the building as a ship. Oh goody I another success. Mow we have started our last and hardest year. 8tlll we do not falter because having come this far, we must Find a way or make a way to coexists our Journey. We have been finding out Just how little we know and how much more we need to know. This year we broke our habit and sleeted Billy McDonald as president. Dear Daffodil was presented as our 8enior play. Two advances, made by xir school this year, has added to our pride in our Alma Mater; being reinstated in the Southern Association of 8chools and Colleges, and the taildlng of the new gymnasium. Instead of a Senior Prom, we took a trip. It was educational as well as a lot of fun. On this trip we toured part of the state of Florida and visited several points of interest. To save money we took this trip on a school bus, which made rough riding but we really had fun. The Junior-Senior Banquet was very nice and now we are looking forward to oomemicement which is only a few days mvay. As we think of leaving Fort Meade High 8ohool, we become dreamy eyed; our Binds filled with both the past and the fhture. Mainly, we are thinking about what the future holds in store for us. And as it wouldn't bs Cyprsss Cardans without a vatar skier I wasn't surprised to find BITTY JANE TAUGHN occupying this position Tha next day Singling Brothers Circus was patting on a show at Madison Square Cardans whara I was still ar— a-working I decided to go, and was glad I did At one of the aids shows who should be tha barker, of rancons voice, but C H. LANIEB. He was advertising a show which starred JUNE 8MITOTICE, 8arah Tinkle and her Southern Bailee. After telling them about the reunion I reached tha big tent Just in time for tha horse shew. It was than I saw HAZEL PRINE She claims to be tha only woman in show business who can rids a horse, standing on her head, yodeling, I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart , at the same time. A few days after that I left for Fort Maada, planning to find tha rest of my friends. On my way home my train had a two hour wait in a small town in South Carolina. Since I was hungry I decided to gat something to sat in a reeturant across from tha station Whom should I a as behind tha counter, picking her teeth, but MATTIE FLOWERS? Thmi I knew WHY tha reeturant was called THE FLOWER POT . After inviting Mattie, I asked if she knew where others of our classmates were. She told ma HAROLD SIMM0N8 had stopped in a few days ago on hia vacation. Hia business is driving a bus to and from all points of Florida to Chattahoochee While sating my sandwich I picked up a newspaper After reading tha beet part of the pa- per, tha fuxmies of course, my ayee dropped to a certain article. It was telling about quintuplet which had been born in Florida. As I read on it mentioned a Dr. Baggett Baggett , I said to my- • elf— Now where have I heard that name before ? Than it dawned on me that it was ETKLYN BAGGETT who is now noted as one of the greatest pediatricians in the U 8.A. ANN WINDHAM, who now runs Marine Studios, called Dr. Baggett to attend the new arrivals. Ann a ays the blessed events are tha moat wonderful thing ever to happen to harJI At tha early age of three day tha bablee are so affectionate that if Ann tickles them under tha chin they respond vivaciously, hoping that it will go on forever Yes sir, they are eaid to be the smartest, the moat adorable baby porpoises in tha world, tha only ones aver to be born in captivity I arrived in Fort Meade tired and weary—but not too weary to go to the drugstore where I wee sure to bump into someone I knew. Who should walk in but JEANETTE AKINS, wife of Mr. John Collins, Superintendent of tha Swift Phosphate Mina? Walking along behind her were four little, red headed boys When she told me they were hara I said by all means bring them to the reunion 8he was on bar way to Bartow and asked if I would like to go along. She liked the idea of the reunion very mxch and consented to help find everyone. To my surprise aha told me that quite a few members of our class had settled within a few miles of Fort Meade; also BETTY B0BKRT8 was leading a happy life in Bowling Green with her husband, Pierce Mills feem we got about half way between Fort Meade and Bartow, I discovered a new night club The big neon aign flasad Walker Inn—We'll Help You Carry Her Out Jeanette explained that it was recently built by my old friend RALPH WALKER and that MYRLE CREWS was tha star singer of the floor show presented each night from nine till' 10:89 Whan wa arrived in Bartow I was window shopping so I ambled into Jesslyn'e Gift 8tore. There in the back wee LETT IE MAI Me DAN I EL who owns tha store ALYISELL BASS was her head clerk They told ma that BILL MCDONALD was working in tha court house as an accountant I went to see him and ha let ma raad a letter he had recently received from EUERT and MARY JONES who have a ranch in Connecticut. I remember whan wa ware aeniora Elbert named a prise calf Florins Now from that one little calf he has bred a herd of cattle that give Fiorina ted Milk and everyone has such perfect teeth that there isn't a dentist in the radius of 100 miles My trip to Bartow was very successful for all my friends were excited over the idea of seeing our class reunited The next dAy I decided to go down to the school hoots and look ths pises ovsr. Tbs first person X • was WAYNE DUNCAN who is now coach at 7. M. H. 3. Bs informed ms that hs had coached ths winners of ths Booth Florida Conference. The red model-A is still in his back yard and he is still trying to fix it. Hs also told me NORMA MOODY was the Physical Idncation teacher. On the way dp to the office I asked Pete «here JEAN SCOTT had gone. Be armwered in sotto voice, She's gone to Reno again. ■Again , I exclaimed, what is she doing in Reno in the first placeT The answer came in a dry voice, Getting a divorce from her fourth husband. When we walked in the door of the office I found YONCBIL LLOYD working as secretary of the school. And who should walk out of the principals' office but CHARLES CANNON. I asked him where MAR GIB PIERCE was and he told me she was home eupervlslng the washing for a family of eighty. He said washing their clothes was the easy part; they had trouble whan they had to name another one. They practically run out of nsince and so now they had started using the nsmea of popular brands of soap suds. If they keep adding rooms on their home its going to look like a patch-work quilt. m it's the nicest orphanage in the state 11 I hadn't had much exercise that day so I decided to walk home. When I passed the Funeral Home I noticed the sign was changed. It read Prine's Mortuary. Of coarse 1 It was JAMES PRINE. In small letters under the large ones was his motto— Through these Portals Pass the lest Dressed peo- ple in the Land I When I got home I was so tired that I decided to sit down and listen to ths radio. A program was coming from the new broadcasting station in Fort Meade; I noticed how familiar the voice sounded. It was DOROTHY LA8TIHGZRI Her program was, How To Catch A Man In Ten Xasy Les- sons. I called her after the broadcast to tell her about the reunion. She said that she wo old like that. Vhile we were talking she told me that JEANETTE LANIER and JEWELL ATWELL weren't in the states, but were touring Europe in a roller skating folliss. She said they had the fonniest duo-clown act ever to cross the oceanII After a pleasant conversation with Dorothy she apolo- getically told me that she hated to hang op but she had an appointment at ths EZMINA POWELL Bwau% Salon. She was very excited, for she was going to get Edwins's newest permanent creation. It was a bobbed-bangs effect with a droop-curl. My problem was almost solved when I had succeeded in finding CLARA NELL STEQMAIER, and MARGARET ALLBRITTON. I found Clara Nell running a boarding house in our own thriving metropolis and Margaret as a secretary in the olty hall. Now I had only a few more to find. MYRA AL1RITT0N is operating a cafeteria in the mid- dle of town. HOWARD MILLER is giving her a lot of competition by running the local recreation hall. TALLULAH IXJNN tCORE, better known as the famous Lola is now supporting her husband and dhlldrsn as a star baseball player. After asking almost everyone in town I found that 1ETTY CREVELING was a Flagpole sit- ter in Philldelphlai I wired her about the reunion but, since she had been on the pole only 3 months, and since 6 months was her goal,, she couldn't possibly make it. Well, that wes all of them, so we set the date of the reunion for the next Saturday night. That's the night we always used to prowl. We all agreed that the beet place to have it would be on Calvsrly Mountain at the DeVane Mansion. JOYCE and FLOYD DeYANS have bougit the beautiful, land- scaped mountain and built one of the most bsantiful colonial estates in the land. Floyd owns all the groves around Ft. Meade. His wife, Joyce, has developed an emulsion from the seeds of her husbands seedless oranges which will absolutely cure falling eyelashes. There was a big crowd and we had a swell time sitting out in the yard around the fire, roa ing hot dogs, and talking about the things we used to do. (The things that could be talked about I )• I had to leave on the following Monday but on my way back I felt my trip had been worth- while, and that maybe ten years from now we could do the same thing again.
