We have struggled from the first grade to the final year----tne Senior year. Some made It In twelve years; for otners, It took longer, but we all made It; Looking down on the first graders, we can nardly Imagine that we were ever so small. What a cnange . From pigtails with ribbons and short pants to dignified Seniors.' On September 6, 1944, we found that we very green fresh- men, trying to get acquainted with the Idea of being In a real high school. This was what we haa been looking forward to, and now that we were here, we didn't know wnat to do with ourselves. We elected Joe Warren Joiner as our class president. Struggling onward, we became sophomores In time. George Atwell was elected class president. we sponsorea Stunt Night , which went over wltn a bang.' Several picnics and parties were enjoyed at our favorite spot, Klssengen Springs. As Juniors, we felt Important. Roderick Streetman was elected president of our class. Many were the plans, which had to be worked out, and tasks to be accompllsned. Money, for the exciting Junior-Senior Banquet, was our star project. This was accomplished by the presentation of our play entitled Aaron Slick from Punkln Crick . The banquet was held at the Haven Hotel In Winter Haven, with great gusto . The most thrilling event of the year, however, was the ordering of our class rings. Now, Just over the horizon, was our goal----that of being Seniors with all the fabled privileges. Now came the all Important Dignified Senior year. We started the year off by electing Joe Warren Joiner to serve as president. Our activities Included parties, picnics, and a trip to the beach. The Senor Prom, held at tne Sorosls Cluo In Lake- land on December 18th, proved to be tne big social event of the year. The Seniors ana their dates had a gay time. The colored balloons, mistletoe, a Christmas tree, and otner decorations created a cheerful atmosphere. The next thing on the program was tne Junior-Senior Banquet, closely followed by the exciting Senior Play. Realizing that graduation was drawing near, we became more serious minded. Thoughts of regret crowded our minds------we would never again be students of Fort Meade High School; never again would we mingle wltn teacners and frlenas In our classrooms. Looking back upon the good times we had enjoyed, we knew tnat Fort Meade High School would always be near and dear to our nearts. WITNESSES: J, C, Purrftnps (SEAL) Class of 1948 MARIAN TILLIS Attorney At Law Aj dy Hurst Fred .SpgAs t. CLASS PROPHECY In the spring of 1958, since I had been duly nominated, appointed ana elected by my class-mates In 1948, to keep In con- tact with each one and see that they all met in June at our old Stomping Ground Klssengen Springs, I began my long quest......... First, since my work as Field Director oi the Inter- national Red Cross haa kept me In New York for some time I de- cided to check on my clasemaLes who were In and around New York. It wasn't hard to locate my old friend DOROTHY ARNOLD, since her name glittered In beautiful neon lignts in front of s Carnegie Hall wnere she appears nightly as the famous accompanist for all Symphony Orchestras that aopear there. During my visit with Dot she told me that GEORGE COMPTON and BETTY JO COLLINS had become a vaudeville team now that vaudeville had returned to pop- ularity. They are now playing In the Wlnkum Bllnkum and Nod Night Club which opens at 8:30 in the morning until 6:00 in the afternoon. JANET DAVIS, after trying for many years to get into the movies finally made it. She and Richard are famous for their love scenes . ELOUISE MIZELL is still pursuing her ambition to be a model. Eloulse was too short to become a Powers Model but she famed the country over as a model for the Pig-tall Styles . I left New York and started back to Fort Meade with the desire to meet more of my classmates ana with the hope that they hadn't changed too much. In traveling to Fort Meade, I noticed a new night club, The Celly B , being opened in place of the Tangerine Club in Tampa. As the name haa a familiar rln to it I went in and who should I meet but MARCEL BCJTLER, owner and proprietor and better known to us as Celly B. I recognized GENE HOLLOWAY as the Band Leader. He wae playing his own arrangement of Sugar Daddy Blues while MARIAN TILLI8 wae singing this bluey, Jltterbugy, swlngy tune which was now number one on the Hit Parade. I met EVELYN RIVERS the other day who is now Evelyn Best. Remember Evelyn's ambition was to have twins but it looks as though she wae a little over ambitious for she is now the proud mother of Quintuplets (all boys). She told me that FAY THOMPSON Mlzell is living in Bartow with her husband who 16 not Chief of Police and that HAZEL NEWSOME was now the mother of twin girls ana she and her husband are living on a large estate in Savannah, Georgia. Oh, yes, OPAL MORGAN runs a beauty parlor too, the You'll never look the same Beauty Parlor and her speciality is face lifting. I could hardly recognize any of my ola classmates who were her customers. PARE ALLRED now owns and runs the Funeral Home in Fort Meade, his wife formerly MARTHA RICHARDS help6 him. Their motto is We never stand you up ! But as business was a little dead, Martha took a Job in PEGGY SMITH'S Slick Chic Beauty Salon. BOBBY McCLELLAN is now owner of the McClellan's Super Market . By the way he has managed to leave one finger on his left hand. He told me that MANLEY WAITER was making a tour of the states expounding his theory on How to live the Democratic way of Life in a Communistic Coun- try , while RODERICK STREETMAN is doing alright as local Dentist. He is famous for his brldgework. FLORIDA DENNETTE le the owner of the Dennette Dinette and next door Is the You Never Live But Once hoepltal In which IDELL MOTT Is a nurse ana WILBUR SELLERS la the leading Burgeon. EUNICE GREEK la a well-known drees designer here In Fort Meade, her lateat creation la a Hobble Skirt with a Bu8tle. IDA DISHONG hae finally talked her way up from Bookkeeper and General Manager of the Dlahong Palnte and Floor Sanding Shop to Presi- dent. Their motto la Nothing like a little paint to make a feller look like wnat he ain't . VEDA WALKER with her abundance of ambition and ability Is now executive aecretary for the new Air Way Corporation from the United Statea to Mare and JERRY ADKINS is a Hoateea on thle air line. JOY BRYAN and MILDRED HUNTER have a radio program In Bowling Green. You can hear them on station MALE In advice to the love lorn . Their most famous topic Is Hae to catch a man ana Keep him In ten easy lessons . Joy has been married tnree times and Mildred la still hoping. ARCHIE HARRIS Is a well-known artist. You can see hla paintings moat anywhere, especially along tne aides of tne road. After ten years of hard work aa chief window washer and delivery boy, ROBERT ALTMAN la now the owner of tne Badcock Furniture Company In Fort Meade. MALCOLM LEE was unanimously elected Mayor of Leeavllle while MAC LANIER la owner ana operator of the Doodle Subway that runs from Leeavllle to Fort Meade ana back. GLEN McLEAN la now a senior in college. He hopes to graduate this fall. After graduating Glen la planning to be an Archlologlet and travel to Mexico where there are plenty of rocks and where tne earth quakes keep moving them around ao tnat, there won't be so much digging to do. I decided to visit the High School, as it brought back such gay memories. But I had some trouole in finding the office as our school had changed quite a bit. Soon I was knocking on the door and who should greet me but MYRA SMITH who is now aecretary. She told me that J. D. JACKSON was the new principal. You know how WANDA GUEST liked to work with children, well she is now Guidance Director at the Hlgn School, and the children all go to her with their problema both personal and otherwise. BETTY LOU WATSON hadn't changed a bit alto' I really expected her to.be a bit nigh hat aa she is the wife of our present Governor JOE WARREN JOINER. Betty Lou has changed her ambition for a mansion of football players to that of basket-ball girls. She and Joe have five beautiful daughters. I was a wonderful vacation. I certainly enjoyed seeing all my old friends again and I'm wondering what the next ten years will bring.
