E oUT or THE DARKNESS SS S the fiery red ball of the sun sank lower and lower toward the western hornzon a young Arab boy mounted on a wnry black horse rode at a rapld pace across the desert Sehm was returning from a VlSlt wxth hls uncle at a dlstant place to hls fathers tents wh1ch were at an oasxs two days journey on 1 sw1ft camel from Jerusa em Commg to a rlse of ground he stopped by 1 pnle of huge rocks and gazed about h1m All around spread the desert not the realm of drlftlng sands over whxch he had come but that reglon where the herbage began to dwarf and where gramte boulders and brown and gray stones mterspersed w1th tufts of camels grass and acacla trees were strewn over the earth Farther ahead arbutus brambles and twlsted l1ve oak trees appeared to have come up to a certam lme and then lookmg across at the scorchmg waterless waste crouched as 1f ln fear rf Suddenly Sehm notnced the restless smfflng of hns horse Ben Bar and knew that water must be near although thxs seemed almost 1m possxble But upon lookmg toward the rocks he saw a txny stream lssue from a mmmature cave and then lose ltself 1n the sand He dns mounted and as he walked nearer notlced on the border of the pool a curlous shrub surrounded by other coarse vegetatlon of the desert Whlle h1s horse whlch had followed hlm drank gratefullv of the cool water Sehm carefully exammed thxs unusual plant Its leaves of a dull blacklsh green on top and of a hghter green below seemed each to be made of several leaflets arranged on a common stalk Dlg gmg away a bxt of the earth around nt he found that the roots were straxght and black He had never before seen anythmg l1ke thxs and wondered xf such a black ugly plant were capable of produclng a flower Sehm was stnll an hour s rlde from home so he mounted Ben Bar and rode on The sun soon dropped out of sxght the stars came out and It became cool and pleasant After ndmg a dxstance of a league he was startled by the appear ance ln the heavens of a large brxght star whnch cast about lt a dazzlmg Y 4 1 b . . , . , . . . , . r . - BN 3 1 4 Ya ri 1 559 Qt? . . . m 4 ' , L 44 7 'I 2, , . ,fx fp if '1, - C I -:lj h . . .
