IN MEMORY OF MRS. MARIAN HALLOCK On our darkest, moodiest days we sought her out, for there was about her a bright flame of light. No one could stay long in her presence without realizing that the pro- blems he brought with him when he came were not nearly so serious as he had imagined. What a delight it was to hear her laugh, to watch her dance, to see her walk! She was all grace, beauty, talent. Though it could be said of her that she had lived out her whole life in Durango, she was never provincial. She was widely read and always concerned with the hopes and lives and problems of other people, whether they be Fort Lewis A 81 M College students or children or aged of Asia. So, she was sheer fun to be with. You felt better for an hour after she greeted you with a smile in the hall. A visit with her to talk about women's physical education classes, a proposed trip with the Pep Club, the drill team she helped organize, the achievements her students were making in typing--was enough to sustain you for an entire day. l don't know how well the students knew her, for she never sought their admiration nor acclaim, but home- coming and sports events ran smoother because of her careful pre-planning with cheering groups and queen can- didates. Wednesday noon found her in the chapel on bended knee at the Episcopal Communion service. She came to the college when it had only been at the new campus a year, and she helped build the secretarial science program, helped train young people for respon- sible jobs in the community by teaching in the night pro- gram, organized women's recreational programs through the physical education classes, guided a teen-age son to manhood and held open house for his friends and, in her spare time, taught hundreds in Durango to dance. In a quiet way, her life touched many people and now, months after her death, people seek you out when you're in a group or stop you on the street to tell you they studied dancing or typing or physical education under Marian. To paraphrase Shakespeare, so far as the College is concerned, the place has been dignified by the doer's deed. Ill
