FORT LAUDERDALE HIGH SCHOOL Fort Lauderdale, Florida LOUISE McCAUGHAN . . . Editor CAROL LANDRY . . . Co-Editor SUSAN MAYHUE . . . Business Manager — Piano Trarucription by Lou Singer the Class of 1954, Commencement is the finale of a very important performance. Now witi. this yearbook as our program we review our last year of high school. The tempo was quick, the harmony pleas- ant, though not always perfect. The theme was a ten. rful one, expressing present happiness and hope for the future. The familiar tune of our Alma Mater appeared frequently in the background, fading as the year closed into Pomp and Circumstance. We leave the stage together, then separate, each going his own way. As our memories grow dim we will cherish more and more this one remaining link with our high school friends, the 1954 EBB TIDE. contents ml ded caf on ' 9 r zj—-p ] 4 bp-.-:::— J j ’ 't£ : J {;; 3— 4 1 J—m—1 F m— f calendar iXiS '3- =81 ■ ? JACKSONVILLE LEE GENERALS The Generals proved too much for the inex- perienced L's in the season opener. The outstand- ing work of several Flying L veterans could not stop Lee's Preston George from scoring three TD's to give the Generals a 27-0 victory. SOUTH BROWARD BULLDOGS The L's, a 14 point underdog, upset the Bull- dog eleven by a 13-7 count. Casteel's short passes put the L's in scoring position, and Wilson plunged over for the winning TD. MIAMI EDISON RED RAIDERS Olin Green, tallying twice in the first quarter, led the Raiders to a 26-7 triumph. A late drive by Wtlson, Mattull, and Russell gave the L's their lone TD. Co-Captains for the L's were Burkhardt and Mattull. ORLANDO BOONE BRAVES Orlando Boone upset the favored L's by the margin of 14-0. Seven Flying L fumbles coupled with Boone's outstanding punting kept the L's deep in their own territory. Kelly scored both TD's for the Braves. SAINT PETERSBURG GREEN DEVILS Tom Munson, sidelined by a pre-season in- jury, came in to signal the Blue and White eleven to a 13-12 victory over St. Pete. Bob Clark and Inky Mattull scored the TD's for the L's. Bill Clendinen converted the winning point. MIAMI HIGH STINGAREES With Fonts paving the way, the Stingarees of Miami High coasted to a 21-0 victory over the Flying L's. Munson's 40.1 yards punting average was instrumental in keeping the Stingarees from further scores. The L's scoring chances were kept to a minimum by injuries to several key players. Wilton tries for an extra yard. Russell scoots around end. Clendinen try for that all important point. WEST PALM WILDCATS This cold night found the Wildcats hot enough to burn the L's 26-6. The valiant Blue and White fought courageously against breaks and an alert rival before succumbing to the heavily favored Wildcats. Wilson scored for the Flying L's in the waning seconds of the game. LAKELAND DREADNAUGHTS Early in the first quarter, a Lakeland scatback tallied their only TD. In the third quarter Munson connected with a long pass to Russell who then ran for a Flying L TD. The extra point attempt was missed; Lakeland scores a 7-6 win. CORAL GABLES CAVALIERS The Cavaliers struck with rapier-like thrusts when the Flying L defense seemed to have them stymied. The L's offense functioned smoothly for a first half touchdown, but was stopped by its own fumbles in the second half. The final whistle found the L's on the short end of a 26-6 score. MIAMI JACKSON GENERALS An inspired band of Flying L gridders met the power-laden Generals head-on in a thrilling duel before bowing 20-6. In the closing seconds of the first half Munson hit Russell with a TD pass tying the score at 6-6. Long runs by Casoria and Munson in the second half thrilled the L sup- porters, but the Generals' defenses held the rag- ing Blue and White tide short of the goal line. The prospects for a winning season appeared slim for Coach Clois Caldwell and his 1953-54 basketball team. The cage season opened with only two lettermen. Bob Casteel and Al West, returning from the great State Class AA Championship squad. With only two seniors in his usual starting line-up. Coach Caldwell's inexperienced cagers hoped to develop team coordination, offensive prowess, and defensive cooperation by the time the tournament began. Tom Munson, ably assisted by his teammates, appeared to be the most consistent Flying L eager during the season. Seven lettermen from the present varsity squad and a number of aspirants from the successful Junior Varsity squad will make up the 1954-55 team. r ► FRED MAY Guard TOM MUNSON Forward BOB PECK Forward CHARLES PINKERMAN Guard BOB SULTE Canter r) AL WEST Guard Left to right: Al West, Tom Munson, Buffy Ellis, Bob Casteel, Charles King, Steve Etts, Jim Franklin, Bob Suite. Etts with 13 points and Casteel with 12 points led the L's to a 52-47 win on the home boards. CORAL GABLES February 16 The L's, in losing to Coral Gables 54-41, lost the ball 23 times by erratic passes, walking, and palm- ing the ball. REVIEW NORMAN SWIGLER Coac h During Coach Lloyd Frazer's third year as baseball mentor the 1953 Flying L's improved and posted a record of nine wins and nine losses for a .500 percentage. Despite the loss of Bill Huegele's pitching ability, the '54 version of the L's should be a winning combination. In Coach Norman Swigler's initial year as head baseball coach the L's had more than their share of experience. There were eight returning lettermen, five of whom had two or more years of experience with the L's. In the pitching department last year Bill Huegele had a 4-3 record while Al West wound up with a 2-1 record. Steve Etts posted a win, and George Shaw won two and lost three. The outstanding mound performance last year was the no-hit game that Al West hurled at Miami Beach. This year the L's played a twenty-one game schedule. Senior Bill Phelps paced his team- mates throughout his last year with consistent par scores.
