When a man does his duty for twenty years, he is to be commended. When a man lobors with diligence, dedication, and with personal sacrifice, he is to be honored. Herschel J. Roberts has earned the respect and esteem of his fellow educators, the student body, and the community at Fort Knox. He is to be honored. I His service to the Dependent schools at Fort Knox is closely interwoven with its history. He started his career as a teacher and coach in Building 1174 with grades one through twelve and 225 students. His coach- ing ability in basketball is known far and wide. His basketball teams brought the first trophies to the school and two of his teams participated in the State tournament. The 1946 team won third place. By his ability, he climbed the ladder of success in his profession. His leadership as a successful coach and inspiring teacher was soon recognized. He became Principal of the High School in 1945 and was appointed Superintendent of Schools in the fall of 1955. When he took the reins of leadership of the Fort Knox Dependent Schools, he plunged into his work with vigor, determination and foresight. Buildings needed to be constructed, good teachers needed to be em- ployed, programs needed to be implemented. During his administration, he successfully planned the construct- ion, of the Kingslover, Van Voorhis. Pierce, and Mudge Elementary Schools, the Van Voorhis and Scott Junior High Schools, and a new building for the Fort Knox High School, plus an Administrative Building. HiS leadership, f0feSighf, and dfCamS F0 make the Fort Knox Dependent School System one of the best in the nation is now a reality. The Senior Class of' 1962-1965 deems it appropriate to dedicate their Yearbook to our Superintendent as a token of appreciation for his dedication to all of us- 1942-1965.
