ILLUSIONS of c h a n g e omen’s legs also became visible. The mini skirt of the ’60s revealed kneecaps and thighs. Penny loafers , with Lincoln’s copper profile intact, graced fashionable feet. Pedal pushers and black patent leathers resurfaced as crop pants and flats. Richard Nixon’s Watergate gave way to Reagan’s Iran-contra affair. Racism intensified as white supremacy groups sprang up. Bank closings, farm foreclosures and the hun- ger-lined faces of homeless families resurrected the horrors of the 1930s. Memories of those horrors intensified as the Kansas sun baked the earth , and the wind whipped dust devils across the plains. Moisture readings fell 8 inches below local averages .
