The university also received the distinction of being one of the two state universities visited by the Kansas Board of Regents. Events of the year came together in — A Unique Blend It could have been just another year — but it wasn ' t. The difference could be seen in the unique blend of people and events, both local and national, that set apart the year and the university. At the national level, the Tiger football team achieved a fourth-place NAIA ranking while attaining its best season record in 48 years. Later in the year, head football coach Jim Gilstrap announced his resignation as the Tigers ' mentor, citing a move to a Cana- dian Football League coaching spot as his reason. The drying, 100-degree-plus weather that had withered much of the nation earlier in the summer, continued into the fall, causing one of their, three collegiate appearances during the NFL season, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders highlighted Kick-off festivities with a dazzling halftime routine as well as a scholarship benefit.
