Women learn the basic skills of fencing, as well as the funda- mentals of poise, in body mechanics class. Physical Fitness Fostered By Faculty in Physical Ed. Physical education majors, as well as students in other academic fields, can benefit from the opportunity to participate in sports and develop physical and mental skills. Both men and women students are encouraged to participate in intramural sports programs or in one of the nine varsity sports. As a result of recent stress on youth and adult physi- cal fitness, the demand for professional people in the field of Health, Physical Education and Recreation has increased. This year, for the first time, the health edu- cation staff was reinforced with a full-time athletic trainer, Ralph Johnson. His concerns are the care and prevention of athletic injuries in varsity sports and the rehabilitation of injured students in order that they may eventually return to athletic competition. With architects working on details, a new H.P.E.R. complex is presently in the preliminary planning stage. Dr. James Belisle heads the health, physical education and recreation department at Fort Hays State. 27
