Linotype operator Jim Uht sets type from the copy submitted by reporters after it is edited by the editor, for the printing process in the backshop. Leader Scores Big Scoop With Election Special Edition By sponsoring a mock election of national and state officers, then printing a special edition the morning of November 4, The Leader scooped Kansas dailies and gave staffers practical experience in production under pressure. Leader reporters used facilities of the Hays Daily News for Associated Press teletype returns. After studying and editing returns and gathering local data, editor Norman Brewer and his crew returned to the campus to make up the paper and at 1 a.m. met their deadline with Big Jim and the backshop. The press started to roll at 3 a.m. and students picked up their papers as they went to 7:30 classes. Subscribers of area dailies found less complete returns at a later hour that morning. Presses roll in the wee hours of the morning to meet delivery- deadline. The finished product reaches students by 7:30 a.m, p revealing Democratic landslide and local Republican upsf victory.
