SWINGING ALONG SINGING A SONG “Your son s gone back to school ' ' With the increase in emphasis upon air- power in the present war, it became evi- dent to both civil and military authorities that unless immediate steps were taken, this country would be faced with a crit- ical shortage of young men qualified both physically and mentally for training as commissioned aircrew combat teams. It has been the general policy of the Army to refrain from entering the non- military educational field. However, late in the year 1942, it was realized that this policy must be dropped, or at least par- tially modified. As a result of this move, in January, 1943, the Army announced a training program in which men phys- ically and academically qualified would be sent to certain established colleges throughout the United States for a period of training prior to entering the already established preflight units of which Ft. Hays was selected as one of these detach- ments. ☆ COMAAAN DING OFFICERS Captain Soderbloom Delphos, Kansas Served as Commanding Officer Second row Lt. Mae Dallas, Texas Director of Training Lt.
