MR. RALPH SALEM DEDICATION MR. RALPH SALEM With our deepest thanks and appreciation, the Class of '79 dedicates its SIREN to Ralph Salem. For the past four years, Mr. Salem has served as our advisor, teacher and athletic director. In all of these, he has been very cooperative as well as being very friendly to all. Whenever we needed any assistance, Mr. Salem was there to lend a hand. Without his help, most of our class activities, particularly our junior prom, would have only been a dream. It was with his consideration for our class that made everything a success. All in all, we think Mr. Salem is one terrific guy. By dedicating our yearbook to him, we hope that he will remember our class and all the good times we have shared throughout our high school years. Mr. Salem can be assured the Class of 1979 will not forget him. IN APPRECIATION MR. NICHOLAS LASARSO For twenty years, Mr. Nicholas LaSarso has unselfishly dedicated himself in helping the seniors prepare the SIREN. Now, the Class of 1979 would like to take the opportunity to express our deepest thanks and appreciation for all the senior classes. We would like him to know that his endless efforts have not gone unnoticed through the years and that without him the SIREN would never have been the success that it is. We can never express the deep appreciation and gratitude we feel for all he has done, but in our hearts he will always be thought of as a true friend. This year marks not only the last of the 70's but also Mr. LaSarso's twentieth anniversary as the yearbook advisor. The purpose of the SIREN is to create lasting memories of the most precious years of our lives. We hope that as you turn these pages, you will share in the thoughts of our special times at Fort Edward High School. Creating the yearbook is no easy task. We realize that to be successful we need the help of many people. We would like to thank our patrons and advertisers; our teachers and administrators, especially Mr. Mullen, Mr. Sanford, Miss Phillips and Miss Mul-cahy for their photographic assistance; Pat Brady, our yearbook representative; and Dick Durling, who without his time, talent and professional staff this book would not have been a reality. Lastly, we would like to express special thanks to Mr. LaSarso for his cooperation and patience in organizing all this for us. 6 Standing: Mr. LaClair; Mr. Godfrey; Mr. Maziejka; and Mr. Lacque. BICKFORD wi iK'n CLASS HISTORY FALL '75-As we started our first year at FEHS, we quickly adjusted to high school life by electing as officers: PJ Gray, President; Jeff Gorham, Vice-President; Theresa Sheehan, Secretary; Melissa Mullen, Treasurer; and Student Council members - Carl Bates, Karen Strain, Jeff Pelkey, Mary Taylor, Diane Heil and Ed Wood. We held a dance and collected dues. In June, we held a picnic at Kaydeross. FALL '76-We headed into our sophomore year with enthusiasm. First, we selected the same officers: PJ , Theresa, Jeff and Melissa. Class projects included dances as well as ordering class rings. In June, we went to Lake George for our annual picnic. FALL '77-Looking forward to getting our rings and working on the prom, we started our junior year on a high note. As leaders, we had Tom Konopka, President; Mike Esperti, Vice-President; Theresa Sheehan, Secretary; and Melissa Mullen, Treasurer. During the football season, we ran the concession stand which was hard work but a lot of fun as we sold hot dogs, candy, soda, pizza, etc. Our rings arrived in the fall, and we were not disappointed in them. To raise money for the prom, we held some dances and sold candy. In November, we started planning for the prom by selecting Ed Wood and Diane Heil as co-chairmen. With the theme Pieces of April, we ordered supplies and held flower parties. After t months of preparation and hours of decorating, we changed the gym into our creation of springtime. With the music of Double Axle, the event was successful. Reigning as King and Queen were Mike Esperti and Diane Heil with their court consisting of: Jeff Gorham and Darlene Cusick; Ed Wood and Melissa Mullen; Tom Konopka and Annine O'Sick; PJ Gray and Theresa Sheehan; Carl Bates and Karen Strain; Mike D'Angelico and Mary Taylor. The crown bearers were Jo-Jo Volpe and Lisa Broderick who substituted for Angela Esperti when she got stage fright at the last minute. After the prom, a buffet dinner was held at Mike's Fireside Restaurant. Later, prom parties were plentiful. The next day, a picnic was held at the Lake George Battlegrounds. All in all, the year was busy as well as successful. FALL '78-After a hard working, fun-filled junior year, we began our last year at FEHS looking forward to open campus and graduation. As officers, we elected: Tom Konopka, President; Ed Wood, Vice-President; Theresa Sheehan, Secretary; and Melissa Mullen, Treasurer. After five weeks of being on probation, we received open campus privileges. To increase our treasury, we collected the remaining dues, sponsored a few dances and during the basketball games, we operated the concession stand. Plans for the year included the following: ordering announcements, caps and gowns; having a senior outing; attending the Alumni Banquet; and finally, graduation on June 24th. As in the past, the class financed and published the SIREN with Ed Wood and Kati Collier as co-editors. ycl ft Looking back over the past four years, we realize that a lot has been accomplished as we have matured. We know that this could not have happened without the help of our administrators and teachers, particularly our advisors: Mr. Broderick; Mr. Adams; Mrs. Bombard; Mr. Lewza; Mrs. Hardick and especially our close friend Mr. Salem 4 20 GROUP THERAPY MRS. Captain of the S.S. Chaos was BILL TRACKEY, Admiral, U.S. Navy. First Mate BILL ABARE, U.S.N., saw to all arrangements. The ship was designed by our own ED WOOD, a successful New York architect. By the way, DARLENE CUSICK is office manager for Ed's firm. Since this was the maiden voyage of the ship, Father TOM KONOPKA broke a bottle of champagne on the bow. Fine food was provided by class members ROBERTA EASTMAN and EMMA MONTELLO, owners of a restaurant in Fort Edward. Employees ROBIN TAYLOR AND ANNINE O'SICK served as chief waitress and hostess. TRACY FLORES, MARK CARPENTER and MIKE HAMMOND, owners of a local pub back home, provided liquid refreshment, and CHRIS TAYLOR, normally a comic at the pub, provided entertainment. MARY TAYLOR, now a phys. ed. teacher at Fort Edward High School, was in charge of recreation. KATI COLLIER provided free tennis lessons, Kati is a tennis pro at Sun 'n Fun, a plush resort in Virginia Beach, owned by MARIANNE CIMO and her husband. JAYNE KING, social director at Sun 'n Fun, assumed this job on board. The ship's beauty shop was well-run by class members CAROLYN CORRIVEAU, JEFF PEL-KEY, JANICE VAUGHN and DEBBIE JONES. DEBBIE BLACKMER and KATHY WHALEY opened a mini version of their Lake George boutique, and VAN CHAKALIS, who runs another Lake George shop, The T-Shirt, had all varieties of shirts for sale. PATTI SHORTSLEEVES placed an order with Van for several shirts to be used as an ad for her Vermont dude ranch. The ship's flower shop was manned by DAN GOSLINE, who normally runs a shop in Hudson Falls. One of Dan's best customers was NANCY CULLIGAN, bookkeeper at the Grand Union, who arrived with store manager, MIKD D'ANGELICO. Arriving in her chauffered limousine was PATTY VOLPE, secretary to the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. VICKI MAZIEJKA, Governor of Maine, brought lots of paper work with her. ESTHER SURPRENANT, who is an accountant for SUE TIDD's school of music, had work to do also. She enlisted the help of ANN KING, who is now teaching accounting at Fort Edward High School. Another account of Esther's is LARRY DORSEY'S motorcycle shop, located in Glens Fals. Although the S.S. Chaos was well built by construction workers MARK CASSANT, JIM McNUTT and JOHN SHERRANGE, the motor conked out on the way to Germany. Fortunately, MIKE ESPERTI, an engineer with General Electric Co., was present to fix it. He was helped by airline mechanic STEVE NICHOLS and GARY VADNAIS, chief auto mechanic at JOE WILSON'S used car lot. The ship's infirmary was well tendd by nurses JEFF GORHAM and DIANE HEIL. ANNE TRACKEY, a medical secretary at the Glens Fall Hospital, kept records. LAURA SOTTILE, who has fulfilled her dream of becoming a psychologist, spent some time visiting the infirmary. WENDY HURLBURT, who owns her own photography studio, was kept busy with her camera. She took several pictures of STACIE TROMBLEY and her family, as well as some portraits of MARY LEWIS, to be used on the cover of her soon-to-be released book of poems. Wendy sees JIM SMITH quite a bit at the Post Star, where he is the circulation manager. Wendy also took some snaps of JOE MCCARTHY and MELISSA MULLEN, each of who recently won an Olympic gold medal; Joe in the marathon, and Melissa on the balance beam. Also present at the Olympics was MARTHA OGDEN, who was head of the color guard. Other celebrities were P.J. GRAY of the Los Angeles Rams and MATT TRAVER, manager of the Rams. JOHN DUNDON, police chief of Fort Edward, was in charge of ship security. Also arriving in uniform were LOUIS CAPUTO and JOHN RABINE, N.Y. State Conservation Officers. Several other classmates are in uniform, and while en route, the ship made stops to see them. KAREN STRAIN is with her husband, who is stationed in Germany. Also, JOE HART and his family are in Germany. Upon leaving Europe, the ship headed for Okinawa to visit servicemen CARL BATES and MARK PLUDE and finally back to Latin America to visit old friend CARLOS CASTRO and then on to Florida where BARBARA FAULHABER is busy in her job as an Army recruiting officer. The next day, the shop arrived in New York with fond memories and plans for a future reunion. 57 MR. ROGERS ROOM 29 1st: J. Carpenter; J. Bartlett; A. Brown; L. Corlew; and J. Corri-veau. 2nd: C. VARSITY FOOTBALL In the first season of the re- organized Northern Conference , the Flying Forts found themselves in the Adirondack Division. Playing in the small school section did not make the season easier as the Forts ran into tough opposition and ended the year without a win. Even though they were outs-cored in every game, the team never gave up and played inspired football. The desire to win has been instilled in the future Forts. FOOTBALL With fifteen freshmen on the squad, the J.V.'s played a full schedule against Conference teams. Lacking experience, they beat a tough Corinth team for a 1-6 season. Enthusiasm and spirit were the key words for the entire team as they gained the know know-how to bring FHS a winning team and a Conference Championship. Good form. 90 Co-captains-Jeff and Kevin Pink for the pop. CROSS COUNTRY SECOND PLACE - NORTHERN CONFERENCE After dropping its first meet to Granville, the squad reeled off 5 straight Conference wins for runner-up honors to Granville. In the Conference Meet, the Forts placed second to Granville for its best showing in years. Girls were added to the team and did very well. Coach Bunn was pleased with the season as well as the nucleus he will have for next year. FALL SPORTS It was a long season on the links as the golf team finished a disappointing season without a win. The young players on the team gained the experience which will bring Coach Toomey the winning :rophy. Seniors-Jeff and Joe Seniors-Joe and Mike GOLF FIELD HOCKEY Participating in the Adirondack League, the hockey team posted a 3-4-2 season. This represents the best showing for the Forts and indicates that the team will bring the championship to FEHS soon. During the long, hard season the girls showed spirit and determination in all the games. Credit should be given to Coach Phillips for the sportsmanship the girls displayed. All in all, the program was successful. MANAGERS: Shay and Diane SCOREKEEPER: Marianne Hey, BUCKO! Where did the ball go? I'll show you how it is done! 93 Killer Instinct Is my hair perfect? John Mark VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach Ross and his team. The Forts had their toughest season in years. Having a very small squad, and lacking veterans, the team was out muscled and outrebounded, and the basket seemed impossible to reach. The Forts had a 1-8 conference record and ended the year with a 2-16 season. This year the team hosted the Christmas tournament in which Poultney won the trophy. Even though the record was not the greatest, the team played with spirit and determination all year. Playing with enthusiasm, the team met tough opposition and came up on the short end of the scoreboard. However, the squad gained experience with confidence for the future. Coach Leitch and his team One on one 100 JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL EIGHTH GRADE Under Coach Jack Toomey's guidance, the junior high teams played exciting basketball. The seventh grade ended the season with an outstanding 6-1 conference record and 9-2 overall and became Northern Conference Co-Champions with Whitehall. The loss of a few key players hurt the eighth grade team as then posted a 3-7 conference record and a 3-9 overall season. On the whole, it was a successful season. Coach Toomey and Squad leaders Kenny, Kevin, Mark Chuck. wijj SEVENTH GRADE NORTHERN CONFERENCE CO-CHAMPIONS 101 BASKETBALL The Varsity team had a tough season with their only win against Whitehall, giving them an overall Northern Conference record of 1-9. The J.V. team was extre-memly successful with an an undefeated season of 8-0, making them Northern Conference champions. For the first time, the girls team took part in a tournament in Hartford where they fought to a second place finish. Coach Bill Durkee has great hope for the teams in the future. Coach Durkee with the varsity girls Senior Sue Tidd - Coach Durkee Co-Captains Toni Buck JR. VARSITY Co-Captains Rhcnda Mary J.V. Team and Coach Durkee 102 Sue Warming up. Is that how you do it? GIRLS TAKE TO THE COURT Robin good for two What's up there? Hub wins out Hands up!!! Terry gets off the floor. 103 Showing improvement, both teams had successful seasons. The varsity posted a 3-5 record with two wins over Granville and an upset win over Corinth. In all of the matches, the varsity was a contender as it gained maturity and experience. The J.V.'s beat Granville twice and won over St. Mary's (HF) and Corinth for a 4-4 season. Both squads brought excitement and interest to the fans. Coach Phillips was impressed with the teams' hard work and success. The future looks good for championship play at Fort Edward High School. VARSITY Having an off year on the diamond, Coach Walling's Forts finished with a 3-8 season. Lacking in depth, the Forts did beat St. Mary's (GF), the Conference champions, for its only defeat in a 14-13 thriller. Also, theJ.V.'s found the win column difficult as they posted a 0-8 season. Home at last! Which way? Keep on truckin! Syl hits a winning homer. Which way is the ball breaking? Looking good for the home crowd. Is Mom watching? WHO’S ON FIRST??? TRACK It was a banner year for the Forts as they posted some key feats. At the Granville Invitational, the squad finished fourth in a strong field. Next, the Forts completed its dual season by clinching a share of the Conference with Whitehall and Granville. In the Sectionals, the team took runner-up honors to Greenwich. Also, new school records were set in some events. The '78 season was a good year for the perennial powerhouse of small school track. A Dead Heat Where's my mark? If I only had longer legs I Fly like a Hartsey !! NORTHERN CONFERENCE TRI-CHAMPIONS NEW RECORD HOLDERS: Joe in the walk; Dick in the hurdles; Jeff in the discus. OOMPH I!! A Cakewalk How many more points do we need to win? Keep your eye on the ball, Jacquie. Working together and displaying much improvement, the softball team came up with a 3-5 record in the Conference, one of the most successful seasons ever. The wins over Corinth and Queensbury were not as exciting as the upset win over Whitehall. Winning or losing, the Forts, playing on the new Mclntrye Park field, showed maturity and displayed good teamwork and sportsmanship. WIZ Where do I throw it? “ALL-STARS” How far is the fence?
