C LH5 5 c o A C H DEDICATION F It is with deep thanks and appreciation that we dedicate this SIREN to Mr. Peter Miles. For the past four years, Mr. Miles has been involved with us as a coach, a teacher and an advisor. Either in the classroom or on the p athletic field, Mr. Miles has instilled in us academic achievement and school spirit. Personally, as advisor, he did not merely preside over activities but N became a part of them. While we were preparing for the prom, Mr. Miles met r every task we asked from him with a willing smile and no complaints. Because we found him to be patient, concerned and sympathic even during some impossible times, the Class of 1977 and the yearbook staff hopes that this offering of our SIREN will seal the memory of our friendship with him. IN MEMORIAM JAMES SMYTHE May 8, 1959-October 23, 1972 In the fall of 1972, the entire class lost a dear friend and classmate — Jimmy Smythe. Although Jimmy was with us for a short time, he will be remembered for his unyielding strength and good spirits. Each of us gained the deepest respect and admiration for Jimmy as he fought with steadfast courage. Jimmy enjoyed life for he round pleasure in the little things we take for granted. Because we feel that Jimmy has not been truly taken from us, we dedicate this page of our SIREN in the lasting memory of what he has meant to all of us. I'd like to leave an echo Whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times And bright and sunny days. -Helen Lowrie Marshall 3 SIREN STAFF EDITORS: Peter Williams and Maureen Buckley. Ah, Memory, the miracle Of yesterday Today! -Michaels- EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Maureen Buckley EDITORS' MESSAGE The purpose of this yearbook is to capture those moments of high school days which will become ever more precious as time progresses. The Press Club has attempted to tell the story of FEHS in 1976-77 on these few pages. However, it is impossible to include all those activities, stirred-up emotions, and personal accomplishments and downfalls which are an everyday occurrence in these years of youth and growth. Before we take you back into the year gone past, we would like to thank our parents and teachers; our patrons and advertisers; Miss Mulcahy, Mr. Mullen, Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Sanford for their help in photography. Also, special thanks go to Mrs. Crum for assisting us in typing; Mr. Durling for his excellent photography and patience; and Mr. Brady. Last, we would like to express our appreciation to Mr. LaSarso, our advisor, for his guidance throughout the year. We hope your journey back through the year is filled with pleasant memories. A teacher helps to mold a generation, giving them answers and reasons for believing. He must be their understanding friend and, at times, he should even be one of them. For only then can he build on yesterday, adapt to the requirements of today, and prepare for the promise of tomorrow. CLASS HISTORY Our freshmen year was one of adjustment as we became acquainted with new friends. In the fall of 1973, our major task was to accustom ourselves to the new and unfamiliar surroundings of high school. First, we elected Colleen Tidd, president; Pete Williams, vice-president; Kris DuFrain, secretary; and Colleen Traver, treasurer, with student council representatives: Nancy King, Mark Strain and Donna Tidd. Aside from the assessing of dues and the sponsoring of a few dances, the class didn't undertake any major types of activities. The next year, as sophomores, we selected Larry Konopka, president; Nancy King, vice-president; Leslie Fisher, secretary; and Colleen Traver, treasurer. Seated as student council members were: James Donahue, Bridgette Hogan and Lee Sandora. On the whole, the year was more active than the first. Probably, the most anticipated event was the ordering of our class rings. Before the year ended, those of us in the Biology and Spanish Clubs journeyed to New York City where we got a glimpse of what big city life is like. With each passing year we became more involved with school and activities. Our junior year was unique and memorable in many respects. It started with the arrival of our rings in October. During the fall, we operated the concession stand during the home football games. Braving the wind, cold and rain, we sold Pepsi, coffee, hot dogs and candy. It was hard work, but fun, for we knew the proceeds would increase our treasury. In the spring we presented our junior prom. Using the theme of Autumn the committee transformed the gym into a magic world. The coronation of Maureen Buckley and Mike Gray as Queen and King highlighted the affair. With the music of Everybody's Gone, the evening was highly successful. Serving on the court were: Pauline Rabine, Martha Layhee, Bridgette Hogan, Donna Tidd, Patti Godfrey. Kathy Jones, Colleen Traver, Lee Sandora, John Fuller, Mark Strain, Keith Mazieika, Glenn Mercier, Larry Konopka, Pete Williams and Bill Cook. The class was lead by president, Kris DuFrain; vice-president, Larry Konopka; secretary, Nancy King; treasurer, Colleen Traver with Jim Donahue, and Leslie Fisher on student council. This past year has gone by swiftly. After selecting Larry Konopka as president; Len Roberts, vice-president; Patti Godfrey, secretary; and Colleen Traver as treasurer, we got right into the business of operating as seniors. Open campus was enjoyed as well as all the school dances. During the basketball season, we ran the concession stand while some of us in the photography club video-taped the games for Colonial Cablevision. Also some seniors helped Mr. Rogers in his Toys for Tots program while others assisted in the production of this SIREN. Plans for the end of the year will hopefully include a picnic, a banquet, and the Alumni Banquet. Finally, on June 26th, we became members of the Fort Edward High School Alumni Association. The Class of 1977 would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who made this class a reality - our parents, teachers, administrators and students of F.E.H.S. A special thanks go to the following - Mr. Mrs. O'Brien, Mr. Miles, Mrs. Sholes, Mrs. Rutledge and Mr. Kilrain - our class advisors, who assisted us during the past four years. We would like you all to know that these years will be the most treasured ones of our life. 44 FORT EDWARD HOLDS CLASS REUNION JUNE 1997: The Class of 1977 held its reunion recently at Sully's Inn. The affair, hosted by LOREN SULLIVAN and SHARON PAQUETTE, was a total success with all members present except LESLIE FISHER, who is in New Guinea working as a missionary with her cousin. Transportation was provided by KAREN DE LANO's Taxi Service with PATTI GODFREY as her front seat co-pilot. DAVE CAPUTO, a renowned photographer, took pictures of the affair. Music was furnished by DARCY SAVILLE on the piano and BRUCE CICERO, a member of Todd Rundgren's. One of the highlights of the night was the fashions worn by some of the guests. BRENDA COLLINS of Creative Fashions, along with her staff, JANICE HUDSON, BRENDA EASTMAN, MARY SUE WHALEY and KAREN BICKFORD, created some beautiful gowns. Thanks go to BILL COOK, who drove his tractor trailer all night so that the gowns could be worn. Attending were some members of the medical profession. DR. MARYELLEN MC-DOUGALL, who is a real cut-up in the operating room, and her staff of nurses-COL-LEEN TIDD, COLLEEN TRAVER, Kl HUI CHON, and NANCY KING. With them came KATHY PLUDE, their medical secretary. Also, ANNE SHEEHAN, a dental hygienist, is drilling jokes into people, and MIKE GRAY, a physical therapist, is helping children. From the business world the class was represented by the following: KRIS DUFRAIN and DONNA TIDD, district managers for Freihofer's, who have invented a new cookie with small chocolate chips; JEFF IULIUCCI and JACK TAYLOR, operators of the kitchen at the Fort Hudson; PETE WILLIAMS and BRIDGETTE HOGAN, owners of a chain of I.H.O.P.'s, with SCOTT STOUGHTON and LARRY KONOPKA handling local affairs while they handle the European department, and their office staff of NANCY ROSE, HONEY MILLER and LORRIE SCHLAKE; MARY ANN MONTELLO and GLENN MERCIER, C.P.A.'s, of Carter's Peanut-Pickers Amalgamated; JOHN WARREN, manager of Grand Union; and DAVE WADE and HOWARD VARNEY, operators of their own construction company along with their chief auto mechanic, BOB WRIGHT. Among other guests were five members who went into marine work. JOHN FULLER is a sea-food farmer while KEITH MAZIEJKA and MARK STRAIN are in ocean photography. LENNY B ROBERTS is a marine biologist while BOB NICHOLS went into the U .S. Marine Corps. Representing the old school were some of our classmates. The noted author of WADDLING LIKE A DUCK, KATHLEEN HAY is teaching a course in journalism while JAMES DONAHUE is developing a new language in the elementary school. MARTHA LAYHEE and PAULINE RABINE supervise the cafeteria. The coaching duties are in the hands of TIM FISHER, who had just retired from pro basketball. With him came RICK CURTIS, the new coach of the NY Knicks. In addition, the following members attended: KATHY JONES and DEBBIE CLOTHIER. who still reside in the village attending to their domestic duties; MIKE MCCOT-TER of the T.V. series, Welcome Back McCotter ; ED MAZIEJKA and MAUREEN BUCKLEY, who have revolutionized the social welfare system; LEE SANDORA and STEVE RUSSO of Doomesday Electronic Engineering, Inc.; and FELIX PERRY, winner of his first National Championship in Motocrossing. Finally, the honored guest for the meeting was classmate, DR. RON CURTIS, the noted archaeologist, who is still searching for artifacts to prove the answer to the question, Is this Earth? Judging from his talk, if he finds the answer to the question, the class plans to reconvene for its next reunion in 2007. 47 These treasures none can take from me-My cameos of memory. -Helen Lowrie Marshall- These are my treasures kept apart. Although the outlook for the Forts was not promising at the beginning of the season, the Varsity came through with an impressive 5-2 record. Coaches Lewza and Terrio molded a handful of veterans with grit and determination into a fighting machine. Playing in the new Northern Conference set-up, the Forts faced tremendous odds as each week they fought some good tough teams as well as the weather. After beating Whitehall, the team was a leading contender for first place throughout the season. Highlight of the season, aside from the Whitehall victory, was the placing of the following on the All-Conference team: Joe Sandora, Mike Gray, Jeff Roberts, and Tim Fisher. Lee Sandora, Bob Nichols, and Keith Maziejka made the Honorable Mention list. All in all, both the offense and defense played with pride and good sportsmanship which complimented the school. 79 FLYING FORTS FLIGHT . . First and ten to go!! Where did the ball go?? FROSH FOOTBALL Playing modified football, the young Forts showed that they have the makings for an exceptional varsity team. Working with young and inexperienced players, Coaches Miles and Toomey trained and disciplined the team to a 2-3-1 season. As the record indicates, the Junior Forts were in every game. The whole season was played in the last game. In a heavy, wet snowstorm, the Forts drove for twenty-six points in the mud and beat a tough St. Mary's team. In all the games, win or lose, the Forts displayed the spirit of FEHS. The prospects for next year look good, for the team was always on the tee. CROSS COUNTRY Running through the woods and fields, the team posted a 1-7 record, beating St. Mary's of Hoosick Falls. Senior Ed Maziejka was a consistent first place finisher in all the meets but inexperience beat them. In the Conference, Ed finished second while Jeff Osgood won the J.V. division. Senior Ed Maziejka and Coach Bunn Getting off to a fast start, the Forts won their first five games, lost the next by two to Conference champions, St. Mary's-HF, and won the next five. After that, the team couldn't find the win column as they recorded a 13-8 season, good for third place in the Conference (4-6) and winning the Granville Christmas Tournament. To climax the season, the team lost its last game with St. Mary's-GF in a double-overtime as the ball fell in at the buzzer. From there, the Forts went to the Sectionals to defend its Class E crown. Winning the first two games easily, the squad lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Germantown, 78-79. Overall, the Forts responded to the task for a fine season. With a conference mark of 2-8, the Junior Forts finished the year on the short side of 6-12. The J.V.'s played well against teams in their own class but were overwhelmed by some superior teams. Although the season seemed endless, the sauad faced each game with determination. Coacn Terrio instilled a spirit of never-give-up which made the outcome of the games more respectable. The team learned some valuable lessons and gained the experience necessary to mature as veterans. 88 Carl in action. ■ I3J JUNIOR FORTS IN ACTION Entertaining the crowd. Hurry up, Brodie! Pass ittoArv! Carl, you can't dribble nothing! FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Building a team from inexperienced freshmen, Coach Walling molded a well-disciplined team that gathered a 4-5 record with victories over some outstanding Conference teams. The squad learned fast and earned two wins over a good Whitehall team. In the other games, the Frosh were a contender right up until the end. The prospects for the future junior varsity look promising. Coach Walling's first six. Tim looks to the hoop. Jeff drives around for two. JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL Coach Toomey's squads found themselves learning the game the hard way. The eighth grade played determined ball but came up short with a 2-7 season. The wins came over a tough St. Mary's (GF), one by one point and the other by two. On the other hand, the seventh grade team had a 3-6 record with two wins over Corinth and one over St. Mary's (HF). Playing two close games with St. Mary's (GF), the team lost by only one point in each contest. Considering all aspects, the junior high teams showed an improvement and they gained the experience to make them more of a contender for the next season. Coach Toomey with Jim, John, Brian and Pat. M % KEVIN SEVENTH GRADE With 6 wins and 4 losses, the Forts were runners-up to Granville for the Conference. Coach Walling's team won the Argyle Bicentennial Tournament, which consisted of teams from Salem, Fonda and Argyle. In the Sectionals with a 9-4 record, the varsity lost a close game to Perth. Also, the J.V.'s, under Coach Salem, played fine ball all season as they finished with a 5-7 record. Overall, it was a successful season on the diamond. JUNIOR VARSITY DIAMOND DUST Strong fielding.. .exciting base running, .good pitching.. .base hits and homeruns. .big league plays., the winning run! Lee puts down a perfect bunt. Put that in the book, Glenn! The tape hurts more than the ankle!! Tim gets another put out. Mike plays it safe. Does that mean a steal? Slide, Jeff, slide!! TRACK With a fine batch of seasoned veterans, Coaches Lewza and Miles developed an exceptional team as they won 4 of 7 meets, losing to Queensbury, Granville and Balston Spa. In the Conference Meet, the Forts placed third. It was in the Sectionals where the Forts showed power as they beat out Middleburg for the D-E Championship. This year, records were set by Randy Rabine in the two mile; Ed Maziejka, Dave Quattrocchi, Paul Lewza and Keith Maziejka in the mile relay. Sectional records were set by Clint Roods in the shot put and Dave Quattrocchi in the intermediate hurdles. Mike CHEERLEADERS SOCK IT TO 'EM!! We symbolize the dauntless spirit and tradition of F .E.H.S.. .We ignite an inexhaustible flame of involvement in the hearts of all... 98 FIELD HOCKEY Working with a few veterans and determined new-comers, Coach Phillips brought the most successful season to the Forts. Depending upon senior power, the team was 1-4-1 for the year, the best effort in this new sport. Enthusiasm and spirit was high as the team proved that they will be a contender for next year. Coach Phillips with her starting seniors. A half-time session. GIRLS' BASKETBALL JUNIOR VARSITY Coach Phillips and her sen iors: Donna, Leslie, Maureen, Darcy, MaryEllen, Colleen, Nancy, and Colleen. VARSITY The girls' basketball teams had an unsuccessful season but gave their opponents something to watch-out for in all the games. Enen though the season proved somewhat discouraging for the varsity, the girls exemplified the gradual improvement which comes with time and experience. On the other hand, the junior varsity squad succeeded in supplying the crowd with many exciting games. Among their wins was a victory over an old rival, St. Mary's of Glens Falls. The junior varsity squad, composed mostly of ninth graders, could be the nucleus of a strong team in the future. Regardless, the season was beneficial to both as spirit, determination and sportsmanship was evident. 99 VARSITY Although the teams had a strong finish, it came too late to post a win for the season. Being young and inexperienced, the groups showed their oponents that they will be a contender in the future. Coach Phillips was impressed with the amount of spirit and improvement the teams displayed as each game was played. VARSITY This is the right way, seniors. Even though the Forts had a disappointing season, the record doesn't reflect the determination and spirit each player demonstrated. Under Coach Jetty, the team gained knowledge of the game which should be the basis for a good team this year. Colleen In all the games, sports- manship was the key point. JUNIOR VARSITY Mary Ellen's favorite spot. 101 ENTHUSIASM IS THE CATCH-WORD Unsinkable spirits. ...... Willingness to learn... FOR OUR FEMALE ATHLETES On the court or on the field . . .
