CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1953, our class entered high school as freshmen eagerly anticipating the years that lay ahead. Class officers for this year were: President, John McCarty; Vice-President, Bill Brady; Secretary, Tamara Maslachenko; Treasurer, Nancy Newell; and Student Council Representative, Peter Haley. As blundering freshmen, we were prodded into wearing blue and white beanies. Our freshmen days soon passed, and before we knew it, we were sophomores. The big event of the second year was the Halloween dance, in an atmosphere of cider and com stalks. Officers chosen for this year were; President, Bill Brady; Vice-President, Bill Haley; Secretary, John McCarty; Treasurer, Sandra Catone; and Student Council Representatives, Tamara Maslachenko and Peter Haley. We started our junior year by electing the following officers: President, Jon Sharp; Vice-President, Bill Brady; Secretary, John McCarty; Treasurer, Donna Holbrook; and Student Council Representatives, Tamara Maslachenko and Peter Haley. Selection of our rings was an important item in this year’s activities. The highlight of our junior year was the junior prom. To the tune of our theme, Apple Blossom Time,” our queen, Mary O’Connell, marched to the throne where she was joined by the king, Charles Bemis. The queen was preceded by her attendants, Anne Munoff, Donna Harrington, Nancy Newell, Kathleen Smith, Donna Holbrook, and Jon Ann Cook. We finally entered our senior year with great expectations. At our first class meeting we elected the officers: President, Jon Sharp; Vice-President, Bill Brady; Secretary, Sally Bruso; Treasurer, Donna Holbrook; and Student Council Representatives, Tamara Maslachenko, Peter Haley, and Dan Russell. As December drew near, preparations were made for the senior play. The play, ‘‘Time Out for Ginger,” was directed by Mr. Clark, and was met with success. After four years of hard work our senior trip finally took place in April. Shortly after our graduation exercises occurred bringing four happy years of high school to an end. Mrs. Sholes, Miss Rourke, Miss Cain, and Mr. Davis acted as the faculty advisors for our four years. We wish to express deepest gratitude to the advisors, who wisely guided us through our high school years. Mr. Wilson, the high school principal. Ed Hoffman, the band president.......... Delivery boy............................... Lizzie, the maid The Cast ‘‘TIME OUT FOR GINGER” ACT I In this act the trembling cast made its first appearance before the audience. In the above photo, Jon Sharp, cast as the father, is being kissed by Nancy Newell as a reward for being so easily persuaded to his daughter’s latest whim. The picture below shows Jon Sharp, the father, and Geraldine Smith, the mother, howling with laughter as Mary Keenan tried desperately to hold up her baggy football pants. As Ray Gorham tugged the curtains shut, the relieved actors spurred on by the act’s success, scurried to ready themselves for act two. “Where’s Lizzie mom?” “The ball is snapped. He gets the kick away.” ACT II In this act, which proved to -be the most humorous, Jon Sharp related his impression of his daughter’s first football game. In the first picture, Jon brought the audience into the mood of the game, by describing a punt with convincing action. In the second picture, Jon expressed his joy over the game by hoisting Mary O’Connell, the maid, into the air and whirling her about. This scene was funniest in the morning performance, because part of the scenery was accidentally knocked down. Later, Ginger came home to tell her mother the heartbreaking story of her first football game, and with this, the curtain closed on act two. “Cute? She was magnificent 1 “And from now on, this girl can do what she wants to do. Is that clear?” n ACT III As the curtain parted for the last time, the actors became more relaxed and sure of themselves. In this act, Ginger grew up and finally realized that she was very glad to be a girl. Tommy Green, played by Peter Haley, also realized that his speeches on equality and freedom of choice applied to Ginger too. In the photo abovewesee Tommy Green defending Ginger and his belief by walloping Eddie Davis, portrayed by Felix Perry. Below you see Mr. Clark receiving an engraved lighter from the Senior Class in appreciation of his fine direction. As the curtain closed for the last time the actors were relieved, for they knew they had succeeded. “On behalf of the senior class, we present you a token of appreciation.” JUNIOR PROM ATTENDANTS Jo Ann Cook Kathleen Smith Donna Harrington ATTENDANTS Donna Holbrook Nancy Newell Anne Munoff CROWN BEARERS Jean Gorham and John Haley WHO'S WHO IN REVERSE MOST CAUTIOUS DRIVERS: J. D’Angelico, B. Healy, L. Varney. ROW FOUR: C. Healy, Coach Lewza, G. Pierce. Fort Edward had an improved season this year. Considering the over-all lack of experience of the team, it did well with a 2 - 4 - 1 record, with wins over South High and Greenwich and a hard fought tie against a heavily favored Granville team. The Forts were undermanned in competing against the big schools, thus losing games to Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, St. Mary’s and Whitehall. Next season 10 members of our team will be gone. These boys, invaluable to the team, will be sorely missed. They are: Barrett Healy John McCarty Bob Iusi Mike Roche James Leonard Bob Etu Bill Brady Bill Haley Bill Phillips George Godfrey LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Smatko. N. Munoff, M. Roche, B. Murray, P. Godfrey, H. Benway. CO-CAPTAINS: M. Smatko and H. Benway. ROW ONE: N. Newell, D. McKittrick, M. O’Connell. ROW TWO; J. Cook, E. Feingold, D. Holbrook, M. Biddiscombe. CHEERLEADERS BASKETBALL ROW ONE: R. Etu, R. Iusi, B. Healy, J. McCarty. ROW TWO: Coacli Lewza, G. Pierce, J. Shaw, C. Biddiscombe, P. Sheehan, C. Healy. MISSING FROM PICTURE: M. Roche, J. Hall. This year’s varsity team, coached by Stanley Lewza, had an improved season over last year’s, winning seven and losing nine. The Flying Forts maintained a 70 point average on their home court. Although the Forts lost two more games than they won, every game was a thriller and most of them were decided in the closing seconds, like the Glens Falls and St. Mary’s games. The Club did plenty of scoring with two boys near the top of the list in conference scoring, also the first six averaged twelve points a game per man. To end a successful season the Forts were invited to the sectionals. Boys who will be absent from next years team because of graduation are Bob Iusi, Mike Roche, John McCarty, Barrett Healy, and Bob Etu. J.V. BASKETBALL ROW ONE: J. Leonard, R Boucher, J. Keenan. ROW TWO: L. Ives, H. Harrington, C. Shaw, J. Pidgeon, R Montgomery, J. Chapman, W. McCarty. ROW THREE: L Tripp, R Cameron, N. Becker, J. Terrier, R Rea, D. Aurelia, B. Hall. The J. V.’s, coached by Jack Toomey, ended the season with a 7-9 record. Throughout the season the boys showed fine co-operation and team spirit. The boys played hard. Many of the games were thrillers right down to the wire, as evidenced by the fact that many of the games were lost only by the slightest of margins. The high spot of the campaign was a 3 point victory over the previous undefeated St. Mary’s Junior Varsity. Many of this years performers will be seen in action on next year’s varsity squad. Best of luck to a fine ball club. BASEBALL ROW ONE: N. Becker, P. Sheehan, M. Roche, J. Sharp. ROW TWO; Coach Toomey, R. Etu, J. Hall, J. Keenan, R. Ward. ROW THREE: R. Williams, J. Shaw, J. McCarty. MISSING FROM PICTURE: T. Pickett, G. Stevens, R. Wood. The Fort Edward Nine started off the 1956 baseball season with a bang by winning five straight games. It looked like they would go all the way until they were downed by St. Mary’s in a real tight ball game. Nevertheless, the Forts played good ball for the rest of the season, ending up by winning ten and losing eight. The team displayed fine form and co-operation on the diamond. Such veterans as Dick Wood, George Stevens, and Tom Pickett will be missing from the 1957 squad. TRACK ROW ONE: R. Guillily, G. Stevens, R. Armando, J. Shaw, J. MorrilL ROW TWO: B. Haley, F. Perry, J. Hall, J. McCarty, M. Roche, E. Maziejka, W. Phillips, R. Iusi. ROW THREE: N. LaSarso, Assistant Coach; R. Mercier, C. Healy, J. Cronkhite, T. Arcuri, Stan Lewza, Coach. In the first part of the season, the 1956 track and field forces of Coach Stan Lewza did not make a very good record. They came through, however, in fine style toward the latter part of the year and all but walked away with every event in the Sectional Meet at Johnstown. Things may be brighter at Fort Edward for 1957 as only the faces of George Stevens and Bob Armando will be missing.
