At our first class meeting Mike Sheehan was elected President; Sharon Davidson, Vice-President; Carol Lane, Secretary; Bill Hayward, Treasurer. Bob Newell was chosen to be our Student Council Representative. The highlights of that year were our Freshman hayride and a gala Christmas party which helped to bring us closer together as classmates. Faculty advisors assisting us during our high school years were Mr. Coombs, Mr. Elder, Miss Etu, Mrs. Loughlin, Mrs. Munson, and Mr. Skaden. The next year we returned to school as experienced Sophomores with a slight feeling of superiority over our younger Freshman brothers and sisters. The big thing this year was the traditional Sophomore Halloween Dance. Decorating the gym with an appropriate harvest scheme provided a great deal of fun and happy hours for all. Officers elected for this year were: President, Bob Newell; Vice-President, Charles Daly; Secretary, Carol Lane; Treasurer, Mary Lou Daly. Ray Hubert represented us in Student Council. Selecting our class rings was an important part of our Junior year. Their arrival was anxiously awaited by all, and when they finally came in February of ”54,” everyone thrilled at the sight of the handsome new rings. The “big moment” of this year was our Junior Prom which was held on May 7th. To the theme of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Maryanne Pickett, our queen, preceeded by her attendants, Sharon Davidson, RoseAnneHealy, Margaret La Claire, Carol Lane, Eileen Murphy, and Carole Powers, marched through the beautifully decorated gym to her throne where she was joined by the king, Warren Chilson. The wonderful success of our Prom terminated a very eventful year. The class officers governing us this year were Charles Daly, President; Mike Sheehan, Vice-President; CarolLane, Secretary; and Mary Lou Daly as Treasurer. We were ably represented in Student Council by Bill Davidson and Ray Hubert. In September, 1954, we entered our Senior year with a crash and a bang, feeling every bit as the upperclassmen we now were. At last we were very near that ultimate goal for which we had slowly but surely striven for the past three years. We immediately started things rolling with the election of class officers which were as follows: President, Mike Sheehan; Vice-President, Mary Lou Daly; Secretary, Carol Lane; T reasurer, Connie Russell. Student Council representatives were Ray Hubert, Bill Davidson, and Bob Newell. Everyone worked extra hard this year selling everything imaginable from writing paper to salt water taffy in order to earn money for our Washington and New York trip. Our Senior Play entitled “Our Miss Brooks” produced under the brilliant direction of Mrs. Loughlin was termed a great success, and our Senior Ball held in February provided enjoyment for all. At last in April came our long awaited Senior trip and now, as our four years of high school are coming to a close, we are happily awaiting graduation! This time it was the first Northern Conference Football Championship in the history of Fort Edward. Led by three coaches, John Beale, Jack Toomey, and Dick Terry, the team was undefeated in all seven outings. The Flying Forts had only 25 points scored against them, while they scored 222 points against their opponents during the season. Nine of the team members gained berths on the first and second all-conference teams, while the other two “Iron Men” received Honorable Mention. The Forts were victorious over their first five opponents, thus setting a dramatic stage for the Glens Falls High School game. In this contest, Glens Falls used 33 men to the Forts 11. The “Iron Men, however, came through with a 13-7 victory. After the team defeated Hudson Falls, the people of Fort Edward sponsored a huge victory celebration and parade. Later, two banquets were given in honor of this magnificent team. Jackets and trophies were presented to the Flying Fort team members, and the cheerleaders received gold megaphones as a result of a generous collection taken up by the townspeople. This certainly proves where the hearts of the Fort Edward rooters are--and their interest did much to inspire the team to victory. The 1954-55 Varsity Basketball team of Fort Edward High had an extremely successful season. The Flying Forts had a record of 15 wins and only 3 losses. The Flying Forts were a strong contender for the Northern Conference Crown, but were defeated in the last two weeks of play when the Whitehall Railroaders obtained revenge for an overtime win by the Forts earlier in the season. Glens Falls defeated the Forts, for the second time, less than a week later, thus ruining their conference chances. The Flying Forts, however, continued in good spirit and went on to gain possession of second place in the Northern Conference, a position of which any team can be proud. Coach Beale’s team went to the sectionals at Convention Hall in Saratoga for its second consecutive year. Such excellent hoopsters as Joe Reardon, Bob Newell, Mike Sheehan, Bill Davidson, Ed Ryan, and Chuck Bemis will be missing from the line up next year. These boys had a splendid season and one that they can be proud of. Congratulations to a fine ball club! JUNIOR VARSITY ROW ONE: B. Brady, F. Perry, G. Potter, B. Etu, J. Sharp, J. McCarty, B. The Junior Varsity Basketball Team was also a credit to Fort Edward High for the 1954 - 55 season. Coach Jack Toomey's boys had an excellent record of 11 wins and 1 losses. These youngsters showed good possibilities and many of the faces will probably be familiar on next year's varsity team. The Fort J. V. 's worked hard all year and were rewarded with their fine record. The Little Forts squeezed out a win over the Glens Falls J. V. Indians and this was considered their greatest accomplishment of the year. A great deal of credit and praise is due Jack Toomey and his team for their fine effort and splendid season. BASEBALL ROW ONE: R. Wood. ROW TWO: W. Chilson, M. Sheehan. E. Ryan, R. Newell, R. Savage, W. Davidson, C. Bemis, S. Sofia. ROW THREE: C. Daly, M. Roche, R. Slavin, D. Morrison, R. Harrington, B. The high Flying Forts of Fort Edward wot the Baseball Championship in the spring of 1954 for the first time in two decades. Jack Toomey’s magnificent team did a splendid job for Fort Edward. They defeated such teams as Glens Falls, Granville, Whitehall, and St. Marys. Hudson Falls managed to defeat the Flying Forts once, thus preventing the Forts from having a perfect season. However, Coach Toomey’s men still held the Northern Conference crown. The nine members who were on the starting lineup were: First baseman, Mike Sheehan; second, Bill Davidson; shortstop. Bud Chilson; third. Chuck Bemis; catcher, Sam Sofia; outfielders. Bob Savage, Dick Wood, and Bob Newell. Eddie Ryan, Toomey’s hurling ace, usually handled pitching duties. When Ryan was not on the mound, Newell took his place and proved to be an excellent relief pitcher. Of these nine men, Savage, Sofia, and Chilson are missing from this year’s team. TRACK ROW ONE: L. Saville. Rounding out a successful year in sports, the track and field forces of Coach Jack Leonard won the Class C Sectionals at Johnstown as well as many dual meets throughout the track season. Many of Leonard's top athletes such as Bob Newell, Bill Newell, Ed Ryan, Ray Fish, Ronnie Phelps, and Tony Guillily participated in many of the events and showed outstanding performance. The boys worked hard all spring, and they were well rewarded for their efforts. The team's victories were numerous and it is a known fact that the people of Fort Edward are proud of those who made the victories possible. GEORGE S.
