Prior to Christmas, the club members had a very successful toy and clothing drive for needy children. The Future Farmers of America is the national organization of, by, and for students with interest in the broad field of agriculture and related areas in public secondary schools. It is an educational, non-profit, non-political youth organization of voluntary membership, designed to develop agricultural leadership, character, thrift, scholarship, cooperation, citizenship, and patriotism. The 1972-73 membership is 7 seniors, 4 juniors, 9 sophomores, and 10 freshman. Officers elected out of these members for the year are as follows: President, Ric Hardy; Vice-President, Dale Stone; Sec., Kem Allen; Re- porter, Mike Colwell; Treas., Brian Stovall; Sentinel, Duane Wethern; Parlimentarian, Monty Meeks. The mem- bers set up an annual program of activities consisting of 10 committees. Through these standing committees the major efforts and work of the organization is accomplished. The Fort Benton FFA summer activities included the Fort Benton Community displays at the State Fair in Great Falls and the Chouteau County Fair. They also made the FFA display at the State Fair. The Fort Benton FFA hosted the Judith Basin District Leadership and Training School. Members of other Chapters in the district attended. In October the FFA joined in on the Soil Conservation Range Tour. For the past several years the Fort Benton Chapter has sent at least 2 representatives to the National FFA Con- vention. The 2 representatives selected to go to Kansas City were Ric Hardy and Mike Colwell. The Chapter was involved in many more activities throughout the year which contributed greatly to the school and communtiy. Through their efforts they have indeed made FFA an important and worthwhile organization. 34 CAST Billy Cooper-Pat Davison Claude Cooper-Tyler C order Hank Looper-Duane Frieling Wyatt Looper-A. J. The fresh- men gave the B a fresh coat of paint. After the work, everyone went out to Bateman's for fun and games: tug-of-war, pie eating contest, obstacle races, and the ever-favorite egg toss. The highlight of the day included trying to make it up the hill in the traveler. After rolling back down, everybody was ready to walk home. yearbook staff Bill Wood, Photographer 01,111 IVICCUU Joe Albers, Photographer Darcy Morger, Assist. Editor Mrs. Edwards, Advisor This year's annual was put to- gether by a very small staff that was totally new to the concepts of putting together a yearbook. We have put together, despite this, a fine yearbook that I feel is one of the best. We had one problem that plagued us this year, and has in past years, that being a lack of responsibility and interest on the part of the students. If we have less people who want to produce an annual, perhaps we should dis- continue the yearbook. R. Jahnke, editor I 40 Robert Jahnke, Editor Roxie Lattin, Photographer (L. (Aaah, that bell is music to my (I don't know if I want to go ears!) home yet) FINALLY YOU CAN GO HOME!!! curriculum the time is now.. william j. hoppes superintendent His largest, single undertaking was probably the restructuring of the entire system. As a result, the elementary staff was organized by grade level K-4 and departmentalized in grades 5-12 with appointment of grade level chairmen and department heads. In cooperation with an administrative staff of four, this organization was geared to an intensive in-service pro- gram that brought such results: behavioral concept approach to teaching, vertical curriculum outlines K-12 in all subject areas, individualized in- struction, school-wide student achievement testing program and follow- through. Undoubtedly, curriculum was his main thrust. By utilization of state funding, Mr. Hoppes instituted special education rooms at the Elementary and Jr. High levels. He was able to secure the services of a full-time speech therapist. Programs such as kindergarten, drafting, trades and industry, summer school for students, and expansion in all areas of vo-tech were also added. At the local level, changes were the most prominent. To list just a few: moving into a new Jr. High building, a master textbook up-date schedule, teacher class-load reductions, added health program K-12, phase-elective English in Sr. High, expanded foreign language program, full-time traffic education program, EFIC courses (40) at Jr. High level, and expansion of all extra-curricular activities. All procedures and documents have been es- tablished, up-dated and structured. Add to all of this an extensive evaluation system, that touches all facets of the community, and you should be aware that things have been happening in the Fort Benton Schools the past five years. Mr. Hoppes' philsophy dictates the use of Federal Funds in all areas possible. His ability to utilize this approach brought expanded libraries, Elementary Transitional Room, Jr. High Transitional Room, Sr. High Tutoring Program, Career education programs, purchases of media, summer programs for curriculum work, ex- pansion of the counseling department, a community project for Drug Education, and a production center for sup- plying teaching materials in all areas of instruction. % William J. Hoppes, Superintendent of Schools in Fort Benton since 1968, resigned his post to accept the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Wapato, Washington. During his stay in our school his ac- complishments as a change agent have been numerous and beneficial. A crisp fall night shadowing over the crowded field and sidelines, spectators on each side watched the Benton-Conrad game unwind in a blur of surprises. A wild crowd cheeredj for a brief moment we were num- ber one. The Fort Benton Longhorns had felled the seemingly unbeatable Conrad Cowboys. 21-20. It was closer than the scoreboard indicated. One more minute would mean a victory title for the Longhorns. As the clocked ticked on with a merciless slowness tension mounted. Everything counted on our victory to come. Where did it go? In the grim last moments of the game, our fate was sealed in the wind. Per- haps a fumble, or the grinding of cleats into the hard ground, an intercepted pass.Although our team played hard and well, although the school spirit had surpassed everyones expectations, the fact remained that we were beaten. 21-28. But losing to Number One in the last minute by a few points was nothing to be ashamed of.
