V' 1971-72 Football action saw such interesting highlights as John Lepley stretching for a pass (Top L) and the consultations with the referee (Top R) done here by Team Co-Captains Greg Kegel (42) and Steve Vielleux (14). We also saw sights like Bill Tope (23) and an unidentified defender examining the grass on Scott Field. Defensively, Brian Stovall (51), Vielleux and Lon Taylor (20) play gotcha with a Pioneer from Saggerville. 50 Coach Flanagan receives guidance from above. Members of the Junior Varsity Team were (Top L to R) Larry' Blanchard, Mike May, Bill Leinart, Dave Shaw, Mike Hinkle, Kim Briese, Mike Birkeland, Randy Lusin, Jay Ritland, Russ Axtman, Bruce McGinnis, Bill Sagen, Grant Richards, Dale Violett, A.J. The underclass teams did even better by neither splitting their respective seasons or ending with a winning record. At the end of a rebuilding year, we found we had much to look forward to. Members of the Longhorn Wrestling Squad who went undefeated in dual meet competition and placed 2nd in divisional were: Jim Armon, Ralph Fultz, Dale Jones, Mark Perry, Rocky Murrill, Clyde Ross, Russ Axtman, Mickey Armon, Jim Cornell, Marlen Johnson, Jay Lattin, Mr. Miller, Cris Gysler, Terry Burlingame, Ken Kelly, Don Honrud, Bill McCafferty, Vance Brodock, Brian Stoval, Lon Taylor, Rock White, Ray Scott, Rick White, Jim Albers, and Mr. Buckingham. Wrestling Coach ministers to a fallen Ray Scott during Divisional Tourney action. 55 7 Rock Scores Two Among the most consistent per- formers during the wrestling year were Rock and Rick White. Wres- tling at 156, Rock was one of two Longhorns to gain division championship. (Brian Stovall was the other. ) Rick led throughout his championship match only to be outpointed in the last ten seconds, thereby taking second. Advancing to state, Rock easily captured for FBHS its first class crown. Rick met his divisional nemesis for the state 185 crown but again came up short. Both were excellant students and participated in many school affairs as demonstrated by Rick (Below R). Rock White Rick White Members of the Girls Trampoline Team earned their keep during 71-72 by giving aerial demonstrations dur- ing basketball halftimes. Girls participating were (L to R) Phyllis Siebenaler, Venetta Morger, Peggy Leinart and Kathy Jordan. The one on the bottom? That's their coach of course Mrs. Taylor. Although we only have one lousy picture and they weren't really affiliated with FBHS, the Girls Basketball Team (Bottom) deserves special note because; (1) They were the only Ft. Benton team to be undefeated throughout the season includ- ing a sweep of the Big Sandy Invitational and (2) They were the forerunner of Sanctional League play which started in 72-73. (Top L to R) Sherrie Lippert, Carolyn Lippert, Irene McCoun, Janet Schmidt, Cindy Cook, Pete Elliot, Betty Starke, Coach Ferguson, (Bottom) Cheryl Singer, Barb Hightower, Pam Janssen, Sheila Smith, Roxie Lattin, Lynn Singer. 58 Not only did the performing gymnastics team entertain halftime audiences but they engaged in stiff competition throughout the area. They also provided entertainment in the hallway after school. Team members were (From Left) Coach Taylor, Peggy Leinart, Venetta Morger, Kay Kelly, Gail Baack, Kathy Jordan, Phyllis Siebenaler, Jackie Winden, Pat Cassutt, Laurie Trott, not pictured are Terri Streit and Janell Squires, both of whom took lots of ribbons in their specialties. At left is Kay Kelly on the uneven parallel bars. 59 Sheila Smith was to girls what Rock White was to the guys. Not only an excellent student aca- demically, Sheila was the gun- ner on the girls basketball team, averaging slightly less than 20 points a game (more than many girls TEAMS did) and topped off her high school athletic career by capping the state javelin title. Of special note was the fact that her state mark, although not her all time best, was still better than any other girl in the state did during the '72 season. 60 61 Those responsible for making the rest of us do things we would not ordinarily do, like yelling at a game, did more than their share to instill spirit in the student body. At least it was enough to prevent others from calling us the student corpse. Proven to be the best in the division for two straight years were the A Squad Cheerleaders (opposite page R. Top to Bottom) Sherrie Lippert, Janice Morrow, Patty Herbold, Marcia Robinson, and Jenny Gertson. On this page below, the girls presented goodies to the five visiting Admirals and Generals on VIP Day. At left are the Jr. High Cheerleaders; (L. to R. ) Collen Robertson, Kandy Murrill, Diane Jones and Sheryl Janssen. Not pictured are the following Cheerleading Squads: Wrestling; Gail Hampton, Gail Pearson, Kathleen Grande. Sopho- more; Mary Pederson, Carolyn Lippert, Jackie Stepman, Karla Lambert. Freshman; Kris Olson, Dawn Place, Shelly Cline. 63 ■ 64 — ■ ■ LOOK AT IT THIS WAY— SOMEONE HAS TO PLA Y THE PART OF A FLOWER IN THE CLASS PLAY ACTIVITIES Of all the Musical groups at Ft. Benton High School, including instrumental and vocal combinations, probably no one group was seen and heard by the public as much as the Pep Band (Above). Starting it s year as early (almost) as the football team, the band made all aware of it’s presence at all home football games. The 1971-72 season saw the band attempt a real honest-to-goodness half-time show complete with marching maneuvers and a high stepping major (or was it Majorette?). Considering the time in which the band had to prepare for the tricky two-step tuba toot, they didn't fare too badly. We did have to wonder what Steve Sorkness with his trumpet was doing marching between the ten and fifteen yard lines with two drummers and a stray dog while the rest of the brass section except, of course, trombonists Trott and Olson who were on a collision course with the flute players on the 25, were up around the 50. Howsomeever, they all did get off the field together- just like the football team did. Except for that one slightly humorous outing (which they didn't bother to Tepeat) the band did very well for itself. They were loud and good when that counted and they were just good when that was all that was needed. It was during the crucial closing minutes of a tight basketball game when an increased tempo by the band provided that emotional boost to the team and the fans that may have spelled the difference. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Singer, the Pep Band was the first to say Fight, Longhorns, to the end . I 66 1971-72 Pep Band Members were; (Opposite Page, Top Row L to R) Shelly Cline, Shayla Roddy, Lauri Towner, Carolyn Lippert, Kris Olson, Kathy Grande. (Front Row) Jerry O'Hara, Lloyd Johnson, Jack Anderson, Wayne Ayres. 69 Although not as active during 1971-72 as they have been in the past, the Dance Team (above), under the guidence of Miss Patty Paulson, did present some outstanding routines. Members were; (L to R) Patty Gierke, Jill Draper, Kathy Booth, Peggy Leinart, Gayle Pearson, Donna McSweeney, Doreen Knudson, Leila Nelson, Carolyn Craig, Diane Lippert, and Debbie Wright. At right, Donna McSweeney utilizes her singing talent during her talent portion of the Junior Miss Pageant. 70 Of course Fine Arts includes more than just music and drama. The past half dozen pages and the next two all represent only a small portion of all that really counts and is relevant to this field. Further, the depictions of Drama on this and other pages repre- sents more than another half dozen produced during the year. Some were excellent-----some were classic bombs. Nevertheless, we shouldn't overlook other aspects of art. For instance, many students, as well as faculty members and other townspeople have handcraft, paintings and sculpture on display in two new facilities, the Firehouse Gallery and Our Comer , that opened this year! In all, we can only briefly touch on some of the excellent things that were done this year. ) FT. BENTON HIGH Band members were: (3rd L to R) Kathleen Grande, Kris Olson, Carolyn Lippert, Laurie Towner, Shelly Cline, Patty Herbold, Sherry Lippert, Steve Sorkness, David Gierke, Scott Perry, John Jordon, Steve Vielleux, Gary Schmidt, Jim Olson, Marilyn Leazenby, Dennis Stone, Jon Trott, Gail Hampton, Bill Wood, (2nd) Lynn Singer, Phyllis Birkeland, Phyllis Siebenaler, Pam Stubsten, Cindy Reed, Diane Booth, Alvina Beck, Diane Willson, Sue Jahnke, Laurie Trott, Nancy Gottfried, Bob Winebrennor, Harvey Burlingame, Frank Doll, Tom 72 SCHOOL BAND (FBHS) Sorkness, Janet Jensen, Billie Jo Knecht, Eileen Kelly, Gayle Pearson, Joe Albers, Carl Gysler, (1st) JoAnne Jordan, Venetta Morger, Caryn Doll, Nancy Ayers, Rebecca Nagengast, Anita Siebanaler, Dawn Place, Mary Ann Hanford, Karla Lambert, Cinda Burlingame, Mary Pederson, Jenny Gertson, Marcia Robinson, Cheryl Singer, Sheila Smith, and Doreen Knudson. Directed by Mr. Singer. 73 HOMECOMING 1971 Sophomore Candidates: Mary Pederson, Pat Cassutt, Jackie Stepman. Junior Candidates: Jenny Stepman, Doreen Knudson, Venetta Morger. Senior Candidates Marilyn Ritland, Sarah Robertson, Sherrie Lippert. 74 No slouch as a photographer herself, Sarah Robertson obviously didn't shoot these pictures. What she did do was add that extra something to an already beautiful and successful day. The seniors took first in float competition (again) and the Longhorns put on a good defensive display for three quarters before finally folding to the highly, rated Conrad Cowboys.
