After smothering Cut Bank’s Wolves in the first conference game, the Longhorns were set for the test of the season against the previously undefeated Conrad Cowboys. The fight- ing Longhorns couldn't be stopped, how- ever, as they edged the hefty Cowboys, 14-12. The spirit carried over to the next weekend's play, as the Longhorns took the biggest Homecoming victory ever, 41-0. Wins over Shelby, Malta, and Chinook closed out the season with Malta offering the only real competition for the Longhorns -- undefeated Confer- ence Champs riding an 18 game winning streak! Football Team turned in an excellent record of 4 wins and 1 loss for the season. A strong nucleus of sophomores formed the backbone of the team. As the season progressed and as the freshmen gained experience they added excellent support to the team. Probably the most team satisfaction came with the win over Havre as they had beaten Benton quite badly the previous season. Desire and Hustle were the two outstanding charac- teristics which marked this team. These two quali- ties have helped hardnosed football to become a tradition in Fort Benton. Coach Wood The Longhorns had lost a lackluster division- al championship to the Big Sandy Pioneers. A win over the challenging Malta Mustangs kept Benton’s hopes for a trip to State alive. As all knew, the real challenge was yet to come. The Wolves from Cut Bank had been upset by Conrad in their divisional. They, too, looked forward to the decisive game at Con- rad, the game that would determine attend- ance at the State B Tournament. Prognosticators picked the tall and talented Wolves for an easy victory. Many considered the Wolves as the best quint in the State. When the Wolves quickly built up a ten point lead, and held to it for three quarters, the predictions seemed borne out. But, the Longhorn doubters hadn't counted on a fourth quarter, on some boys named Tope and Cook, Coady and Vielleux, and Gross- man, and a spirit called desire. When the cheers died down, the Longhorns and Coach Lepley were on their way to State with a 78-75 victory under their belts and the highest finish for a Longhorn team in seven years still before them. JAY VEE'S UNDEFEATED This year's B squad provided me with a pleas- ure I never expected to have in basketball - - - an undefeated season. Our success can be spelled out in four tangible words necessary for victory. First of all our pressure DEFENSE, applied with our small quick kids, upset most teams disaster- ously (they averaged 42 points per game) and made our fast-breaking offense look very good. Secondly came the ability to SHOOT. As a team we hit 40% of our shots and averaged 67.5 points per game (a new record). However, the third reason for our success, PASSING, gave us many easy baskets. Finally the accuracy from the FREETHROW (63%), was truly a contributing factor. Regardless of these, we would never have com- pleted an undefeated season (the first since 1949- they won 17) with 21 victories had it not been for many intangible words to describe this team. Words like desire, hustle, determination, pride, enthusiasm, spirit, and teamwork. Coach McKeever C SQUAD Under Coaches Barrows and Johnson, the ”C” Squad gained additional experience this year in a rugged schedule of games. Known as the early birds (practice was at 7 a.m. each morning), the team won and lost an even number of games. Several members developed, as the season progressed, into real potentials for B Squad play next season. Coach Barrows 41 Larry Cook guard Ricky Rominger guard Steve Grossman forward Dan Vielleux center Tom Leinart forward Ernie LaBarre forward Gary Lusin center John Leaf forward-guard Rick Bailey guard Through a cold, snowy spring, some fifty thin-clad participants patiently waited for a chance to experience a track meet. It was an unfortunate spring as many fine seniors ended their track careers under adverse conditions. Also most of the fresh- men never had an opportunity to enter even one meet. Still in all we managed 3rd in the divisional meet and scored 7 points in the State Track meet, which was more than any other conference school. Rocky's winning the javelin there was a real highlight and climax to the track season.
