Harlem Globetrotters pause during the fast- moving game sponsored by the BM Chib. Donna Knudson arranges an art display in the senior high school foyer. Coaches Gene McKeeyer and Jack Lepley look on as Roy Willett is presented a life-time pass to all basketball games in honor of his many years service to FBHS. (LEFT) Concert band performs for one of their concerts held in the junior high gym. 3 Mr. Kindzerski ignites an explosive mixture for a roving photographer as Don Kelley, Ed Lenington, and Tom Tope look on. Advanced Biology students absorb themselves in the dissection of fetal pigs. Jack Herbold, Don Kelley, Larry Pope work to perfect equipment used in difficult physics experiments. 4 Bob Schoonover attempts to analyze the structure of the DNA molecule as Kathy Ries records data on a graph. Just before leaving for one of many debate trips, Mr. McGlynn stops to give advice and counsel to one of his many English students. LEFT, Tom Craig usesthe electric lathe in the industrial arts department to shape the base of a lamp. Gary Flom and Wiley Kendall use electric hack saw on their pro- jects for industrial arts. Using seminar study hall to full advantage are Brad Huffman and Gary Arganbright. 5 Our high school and its teachers—always there to serve the student in any possible way. With open doors it awaits the arrival of a flood of students in the quiet of early morning. No matter, no activity can interfere with Mr. McKeever's duty— to make up a government test as he keeps the halls quiet during the operetta. LEFT, Mr. Kindierski enjoys a few minutes with students during the lunch hour. 6 After the Snake Dance, Pep Band performs at the bonfire despite excessive smoke. Highlights Of Homecoming First-place senior float, A Look into the Future, foresees a Longhorn victory and senior candidate Marilyn McDede a s Homecoming Queen. Junior float, Forecast a Victory, placed second in float competition, followed by third-place freshman float, Addinguptoa Victory. Fresh- men a Iso received the prize for best junior high float. Sopho- mores provided s tiff competition with Give 'Em the Old Grind, but failed to place. Mr. Gail Stensland, right, served as master of cere- monies at the annual Homecoming Variety Show; he himself added variety by changing costumes before announcing each act. • ' 7 Longhorn captain Tom Tope congratulates senior Marilyn McDede after crowning her 1964 Homecoming Queen. Warm-ups precede each football game played by the Longhorns. Bob Hudson takes his turn kissing Queen Marilyn—privilege of Senior Longhorns for leading at halftime. Following halftime ceremonies, a happy queen returns to watch victorious Longhorns defeat Cho - teau 20-14. Game Provides Excitement an important game. This play, whose cast was mostly seniors, was the story of an old man and his rejec- tion by a society that no longer wanted him. Bob Hudson, Brad Huffman, and Dan LaBelle inspecta gavel (LEFT) in one of the scenes from MINICK. Old Man Minick (CENTER) tries to find a cce pta n ce with those two men, and finally joins them at their rest home. With a cast of 15, MINICK presented many problems, mainly because of the ex- tensive use of sound effects. The play was directed by Mr. Alan Goller. Brad Huffman, playing a very effective Old Man Minick, spurred the cast to an ef- fective presentation. Several scenes in the play proved extremely hard to present. This was to be the final play presented by an all- school group. 10 The SKELETON WALKS is Presented The spring play, THE SKELETON WALKS, contained a junior-senior cast and an all-junior crew. The play was deemed the most successful of several years, and was directed by Mr. Sam Conner and Mr. Warren Elwood. It was Mr. Conner's first attempt at directing a play. With a cast of ten, the smallest of re- cent plays, the play had the largest gate. An intriguing play of suspense and my- stery, the children of the audience partici- pated in the action. Screams accompanied the skeleton as he carried Lillian Kline up the stairs. The characters of the play were very well cast with each person fitting” his or her role perfectly. This appeared to be the most smooth running and successful play presented at Fort Benton High School re- cently. After this play, the plays will revert back to class plays from all-school plays. This move was necessary because of lack of in- terest in the all-school play. With this change should come the class spirit necessary for a successful play. Cast Mrs. Hubbard Elaine . . . Anne .... II Rick Gilbert, Bobby, uses a broom handle to stop the advance of June Fowler as Mrs. Donahue. Randy Thill, Mrs. Embry, and Donna Knudson, Kinks, stand in fear of the approaching widow in THE SKELETON WALKS. Brad Huffman looks longingly at a picture of his departed wife in MINICK. Brad played Mr. Minick in the play. Gloria Cook, CENTER, Student Director of MINICK, instructs Fred Minick, as played by Doug Stovall, and Nettie Minick, as played by Kathleen Tacke, in some effective actions. 12 Howard Handord, Bill, guards Lillian Kline, Elaine, from the advancing skeleton in THE SKELETON WALKS. Students Join In Spring Cleaning For once in their lives, Rusty Peres, Art McCoun, and Sam Watson show a little muscle as they pull a fence post. Ray Grande supervises dog pile on Sam Watson. Believe it or not, he came out alive. Kelly Moorse seems to think getting a lawn mower started is the funniest thing in the world. Despite this obstacle, her team went on to take the first-place trophy. Dennis Roller, Mike'Speakman, and Kent Aznoe show a bit of hustle as they wheel barrows of fertilizer across the front lawn. 13 Fun, Food Make Longhorn Day Students line up for the evening meal served by the FFA following the hayride to Greenroof Bridge. Splat! Oh, Roxanne Kegal, what a mess you made with that egg. Catch it, don't break it. Gene Paul finds it a bit difficult making his way to the finish line during the skateboard obstacle race. By the way, what happened to the skateboard? After a long, hard day of cleaning school grounds, playing games at the football field, riding those tipping hay wagons, and getting more than enough hay stuffed down their backs, students pause to eat before making the return trip. Don Kelley of the Orange team leads the boys' obstacle race to take first for his team. 14 In The Misty Moonlight Linda Bateman and Linda Lilly put the finishing touches on the ceiling to create an enchanting effect. Loveliness was unveiled through the roman- tic effect created by the aspiring, hard-working juniors in their endeavor to honor the Senior Class. Accenting the theme were a star- studded ceiling and a trickling waterfall sur- rounded by clouds of angel hair, creating an enchanting garden for all in attendance. Chosen by the Junior Class to reign over the prom as Queen was a surprised but happy Andrea Roudebush. Donna Knudson w a s se- lected Senior Princess, Sandy Smith, Junior Princess, and Roxanne Kegal, Sophomore Princess. Excellent dancing music was provided by Chuck Lee's Band from Havre. Pam Nagengast, Bob Schoonover, Dorine Richard, Tim Grossman, and Connie Rominger admire the final result of much hard work—a steaming fountain. Juniors busily and hastily work to complete decorations in time to honor the Seniors. 15 Junior Class President Brian Wood crowns Andrea Roudebush Queen of the Prom which was held in honor of the Senior Class. Mr. Schreuder presents the Bill Vinion Outstanding Music Student Award to Carolyn Holm in recognition of her talents. Gary Taylor spouts a senior prophecy as narrator Gene Bennett questions him. 18 Rocky Tope looks on as Don Kelley receives athletic letter from Mr. Lepley. Gary Scott, Frank Erwin, and Gene Paul attempt to dampen senior spirit by mocking them with a sign from Sneak Day-,fWe Shall Overcome. Awards To Deserving Students Thrilled, Marilyn McDede accepts the VFW Auxiliary Scholarship from Mrs. Chris Nagengast. Dan LaBelle admires journalism Silver Key Award, presented by Mr. Madden. Dola Wilson congratulates Carl McCoun after pre- senting him with the VFW Scholarship. RIGITT, Annual Staff members get awards for many hours of work. The day was spent in such activities as swimming, hiking, playing baseball, and eating. Apparel was periodically damp- ened by Mr. Lepley and his henchmen. Despite petty jealousies, conceits, and pranks of the underclassmen, the seniors felt the day was a success. The magnificent, benovolent, etc., senior legancy slams the juniors. The Class of '65 leaves its farewell mark on the school as its members go out to conquer the world. The day after the night before has caught up with Doug Stovall and Lillian Kline. Tim White seems to be the only energetic senior in the group. Seniors’ Last Class Fling Seniors enjoy bowling tournament at all-night party sponsored by Kiwanis. Following commencement exercises on June 1, 1965, the Kiwanis sponsored an all- night party for the graduating seniors. Lunch was served in the junior high school cafeteria. The seniors were then transported by bus to Benton Lanes, where several hours were spent in a most invigo- rating bowling contest. After returning t o the school, a full- length movie, CHARADE, was shown. A short dance followed at three-thirty in the morning. A delicious breakfast was served, and at five o'clock nearly thirty weary ex- seniors departed from their much-loved school. Sherry Loyland was supposed to be bowling, but her attention evidently'wandered to playboys Doug Stovall and Larry Pope. The full band performed in the home- coming parade, Thanksgiving Concert, Spring Concert and Memorial Day Parade, and in the District Music Festival, where the band received a superior rating. This year smaller ensembles performed such as a woodwind trio, Hungary five band, and a brass ensemble rather than a stage band. The Pep Band had a busy year of home games, district tournament, and a trip to Conrad. The band was honored by ten, preauditioned All-State Band members: Diane Ritter, Rachael Vielleux, Dione Albers, lone Bratvold, Gary Tay- lor, Lea LaBarre, Ed Lenington, Candy Meredith, Clarice Holm and Carolyn Holm. Further honor came as Carolyn Holm represented Fort Benton as the first chair bassoon in All-Northwest Band. - •------------- Mr. Schreuder directs band during the Spring 28 Concert. Under the direction of Mr. Jerry Schreuder, the Pep Band boosted school spirit by playing at all home basketball and football games and during District Basketball Tourna- ment. The Pep Band also traveled to Conrad for the divisional play-off games. The band, selected by Mr. Schreuder, entertained the spectators during the half-time and assisted the cheerleaders. Much versatility was exemplified by the members as they played num- bers ranging from Birth of the Blues to Hands Across the Sea,” a concert march. Since many of the players were from the junior high band, they gained added experience. Led by Mr. Schreuder, the Pep Band performs at one of the many home basketball games in their traditional uniforms. It looks as though everyone is concentrating deeply on giving a good performance. The club's main pro j e ct was afield trip to Helena, Butte, and Bozeman, October 29, 30, and 31. The purpose of this field trip was to expose members to the applied sciences in business and industry today. The field trip took the students through the new cement plant near Helena. Butte provided students with views of the open pit mine and the School of Mines. In Bozeman the members toured the agriculture department of the college. Throughout the year, various members demon- strated projects for the club. Carolyn Holm entered her project in the District Science Fair held in Simms, March 27. Editors were selected at the beginning of the year, and guided members of the class in their speci- fic jobs. Preparing the CANNON REPORT every two weeks involved three major steps: laying-out the pages, and, after typing, putting on headlines, running-off on the Gestetner, and stapling. The paper was then ready for distribution to over 375 readers. 42 Marilyn McDede makes a page lay-out for the CANNON REPORT, as Kathleen Tacke and Sherry Loyland put headlines on another page of the paper. But I know he's in heaven, so it did good to pray. The school will be lonely, at least for awhile, To walk up the hall and miss his warm smile. Dick was a good boy, and sure enough, He never gave up when the going was tough. He was proud of his class and his head was high, He loved his school, and of girls he was shy. Not once did I hear Dick say, It can’t be done, For if a job were impossible, he would try it for fun. He was a symbol of power, and courage he had. He loved life, and he frowned on the bad. We will all miss him, for he was so good, But remember him in your hearts, for what he stood. I know it hurts, andwe'll miss him a lot, But in our hearts a lesson he taught.
