The Longhorns' first loss came at the hands of the conference co-champions, the Great Falls Cen- tral Mustangs, 32 to 14 at Fort Benton, October 2. It was the Mustangs' game until the final quarter when the Longhorns scored twice, holding the Mustangs scoreless. On October 8, the Longhorns went to Chinook, only to get their second loss of the season, 26 to 13. Benton drove to the goal several times, early in the game, but could not score. Finally, in the last quarter the Longhorns managed to score twice on long passes, but were unable to catch the Sugarbeeters. At the homecoming game, the Longhoms defeated the Browning Indians, 26 to 6. Fisher and Rag- land picked up fumbles to score, along with Lenington's brilliant running touchdowns. The Longhorns ended the season at Choteau with a 39 to 6 win over the luckless Bulldogs. Len- ington, playing the best ball game of his career, scored five touchdowns for a total of 33 points. The Longhorns ended the season with five wins and two losses. Although they never won any trophies, they were one of the favored teams to beat. These six seniors played their last football game for FBHS: Charles Lenington, Sam Ragland, Dennis Nottingham, Jerry Swett, Jim Renville, and George Col- lins. The team averaged close to six feet in height and was one of the tallest in the conference. Fairfield was first to fall before the Longhorns as both teams opened their season on the Eagles, home floor. Benton took games both at home and away from F airfield, Choteau, Cut Bank, Sunburst, Browning, Havre Central, and Great Falls Central. Shelby, Chinook and Conrad each won one game from the Longhorns during the conference season. Big Sandy was defeated 50 to 44 in the only non-conference game. February twenty-third to the twenty-sixth marked the beginning of the Northern Divisional Tour- nament held in Great Falls at the Central high school gym. Benton's first game, against Sunburst, was won 54 to 47. In the semi-finals the Longhorns downed the Chinook Sugarbeeters 55 to 52 in a very close con- test. For the divisional championship Shelby turned a Longhorn rally late in the final final minutes to win 67 to 59. Great Falls Central then challenged Fort Benton for second place, but their attempt was unsuc- cessful as the Longhorns won 71 to 65. The victory gave Benton the right to participate in the State Class BH Tournament at Wolf Point. The Longhorns played the Westem Division champs from St. Ignatius in the first game and won 76 to 71. Dennis Vermillion scored 42 points in this game which set a new record for the Wolf Point gym and possibly a new state tournament record. Against Wolf Point in the semi-finals Benton came out on top 68 to 55. For the championship the Longhorns met their old conference rivals, Shelby, and were defeat- ed 71 to 79, thus taking second in the 1955 State Class Bn Tournament. 28
