B H 1938 B4SKETBALL A snag' a snag' our basketball team hxt a snag at the end of the season and we dxdnt take the Chouteau County Tournament or the Dlstrlct Tournament as we had planned The team thxs year contained four le .er men but only one of last years regulars Royal Morr son However the squad came through due to the excellent coachmg of Mr Z1le and Mr Hess w1th an excellent defense fast floor work and a reputatlon fox falr play and sportmg losers Du mg the sea on we chalked up w1ns ln twelve scheduled games and lost seven and thos only because of the Jlnx cfollowlng us-we lost two game to Fort Shaw trunners up for honors m dxs rlctl once to Belt lflrst place 1n d1str1ctJ and IWIOE each to Chmook and Great Falls Reserves We feel that xt was no dlsgrace to be defeated as we were beaten by the besta Thought you might be mterested ln by llne or so on every player so here goes Royal MOYFISOU senlor captaln and guard One of the fastest floor men and cleverest ball handlers 1n the dlstrxct and an able leader Royals servxces wlll be mlssed nent year Donald Schmldt senlor guard cente or forward Strong on the defense and h1gh scorer of the team A good all around man we hate to lose Frank Culbertson Junlor guard captam elect Steadlest player on the team strong defensively a clever ball handler and accurate passer Frank should be much better next year Vern McK1nlay Mac sophomore center Mac developed fast and was a strong cog m the machme Hls helght made h1m a dang rous man under the basket and one of the best rebound men on the squad Donald Rltter Jake sophomore forward The best shot on the team should be a star next year Leslle Taylor Shar y sen or forward Tall and conslstently a good shot Injurles Kelth Gordon Junlor guard A very capable reserve W1ll play some good basket ball next year Frederick Jahnke senlor cente Capable understudy for Mac Pulled the Centervllle game out of the f1re We w1ll mlss h1m next year Edgar Schultz semor forward go d shot and capable all around forward graduates th1S sprmg John Baack sophomore forward John xmproved fast and steadxly Starred ln the Belt game If you watch your grades John you should be a mam stay on the team next year The Longhorns were nosed out 1n county tournament by Blg Sandy Culbertson o a medal for best all around player on our team wh1le Morrxson and Mac were glven places on the all county team In the dlstrlct tournament We defeated St Marys by a two polnt lead to cap ure ftfth place Our captan Morr son who was named as the most valuable player and received a sllver medal for th.s honor was also placed on the all dlstrlct team After the varslty squad had been chosen there were boys left who Wanted to play basketball and these played lntramural games Four teams were chosen freshmen sophomores Jumors and mlxtures The Jumors won the honors Members of that team were Kurth lcaptaml Brown Neyland Fenton and Chaney Avtards were glven the boys for thelr hard work Hllton Roudebush was glven an award for best percentage of free throws P TRACK The Longhorn track team took th1rd 1n th North rn Montana track meet at Havre Thls good shovsxng of the team 1nd1ca es a good dxstrxbut on of talent as the team placed ln all but the welgh., events Local wlnners were C Culbertson D Schmldt V Elllott Halley and Schultz All these boys w1ll recene track letters Coach Zlle took Elhott and Culbertson to the state meet at Mlssoula R- F. . .
