me PIONEER B H 19 3 5 HISTORY OF HIGH SCHOOL Throughout the United States celebrations have been held in honor of the three nundreclth anniversary of the founding of h1 h schools m America We the Fort Benton graduating class of 1935 believe that it ls fitting that we should devote this space to the history of our own school in keeping with the general celebration plans As Fort Benton High School it was founded m 1901 School was conducted in the old part of the present building which was constructed at a cost of 540000 The school began with three teachers and the principal Mr F M Vancll The flrst class was grad uated from a three year course in 1904 Its four members were Vernon Lewis Johr Culbertson Hortense Chesnut and Anna Johnson the present Mrs Orla Nottingham In 1905 Mr J W Lennlng came to Fort Benton and became the superintendent a position he held untll 1921 In that vear the admlnistratlon of School DISZTICI No 1 and the county high school was divided Mr Lennmg retaining the superintendency of the district school and Mr Fred Madison becoming principal of the county high school By popular vote the Fort Benton Hlgh School became Chouteau County High School 1n 1913 It remained as county hi h school until 1932 when it was voted back to its original status In 1933 Mr Lenmng again resumed the superlntendency of the district and Mr Hagie who had become the county hlgh school principal in 1927 remalned as principal of Fort Benton High School In 1904 a four year course of study was begun Three courses were offered the classical scientific and commercial The general course has since been added and sev cral subjects including home economics manual training newswrlting chemistry and speech have been added to the curriculum rooms besides well equipped laboratories fox science home economics and manual train ng Later the old Baker Opera House and adJo1n1ng armory were purchased and remod eled the first being equ1pped for a gymnas1um and the latter for an auditorium In 1928 a classroom and large music practice room were added to the third floor of the school building ln order to accommodate the mcreased enrollment In 1916 the high school vtas accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges nd Secondary Schools and in 1920 by Higher Schools At the present time it holds accrediting ln both associations Attendance has increased from an 1n1t1al enrollment of forty to a gross enrollment of two hundred and fifty three students for the present school year In this period of thirty four years the school has graduated thirty one classes with approximately four hundred and seventy three graduates Snce the completion of the gymnasium around which a comprehensive athletic program could be built the school has developed a good record in athletlcs Each year there are not only full schedules 1n football and basketball but an intra mural schedule lor both boys and girls provides an athletlc program for all students who wish fo par tlcipate Class and inter scholastic track and baseball provide spring activities Since 1927 a music department has been built up which has made the community muslc minded A Well tialned band and orchestra present tuo full programs each year provide incidental music for many school and community projects and participate in the annual Music Festival held in Havre each year Chorus glee club and other vocal groups supplement the lnstrumental work A well equipped manual tran ing depa tment eacn year turns out many proJects which have won much favorable comment at local and district exhibits This depart ment also maintains a curio cabmet on th first flwr of the school bulldmg which is of great h1stouc value and which yearly attracts many visltors Scholastically the school ranks high ln every department For seven consecutive years it has ranked f1rst in the annual dist ict scholarship contest ln Great Falls and lh1S year with Great Falls participating it tied with Belt for second place Several stud ents nave von honors in the state contest at Bozeman A lecently established department which has contributed to the mdlvxdual devel opment of many students IS hat of speech A daily speech class serves as the nucleus for an extended program of dramatlcs platform speaking of various types and dramatics Outside of class interest in departmental activities is kept up b h tions a the Home Economics Club Latin Club B Club Booster Club and sslgiagrgxiezg Phe aim of the administration is to offer a program which will lead to the best all iiguingcgivslopment of the yearly increasing number of students who enter Fort Benton -6 llllillllllllllllllll all :E F. . .
