Many of our teachers are Alumni, and we appreciate their efforts in helping us with our various projects during our high school years. Most of all, we extend our sincere thanks to those Alumni who are our friends and parents. Without their time and support, we could never have achieved many of our goals. We are grateful to the Alumni, who have set us such a good example. As we move on and become Alumni ourselves, we will strive to follow in their footsteps. Mrs. Paulette Athey The Senior Class of 1976 wishes to convey our sincer- est appreciation to Mrs. Paulette Athey for her service to our school and our class. She has worked untiringly in her support of clubs, dances, plays, and activities. Mrs. Athey came to Fort Ashby High School in 1964 and has been a helpful part in the lives of each and every student. She received her A.B. at Sorbonne Uni- versity of France and her Bachelor's Degree at West Virginia University. Mrs. Athey's faithful service as French instructor and active member of the faculty will be repmembered by all who know her. J Vv Appreciation VICTORIA STEVE THEY ARE JUST AWAY I cannot say, I will not say That they are dead, They're just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, They have wandered into an unknown land. And left us here how very fair, If needs must be, they linger there. And you, Oh you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step, and the glad return Think of them faring on, as dear. In the love of there as the love of here; Think of them still as the same, I say: They are not dead, they are just away. MILLER Mimininlialin S |Z Luck ahintudil he. itp hha. The unique honor of being the thirty-sixth and last graduating class of Fort Ashby High School belongs to you. As teacher, I fondly remember the seventeen members of the first graduating class of 1941; and, now, as princi- pal, I congratulate you, the fifty-five graduates of 1976. It seems appropriate, that during our Nation's Bicenten- nial Year, we recognize all of our past graduates in this final memorial issue. Treasured memories and forgotten trials are cherished by each of us, past and present includ- ing students, faculty, parents, custodians, bus drivers, cooks and all school personnel who have assisted in mold- ing the character of our school. Life is a process of time, involvement and change. Four years ago, I regretfully said farewell to Fort Ashby High School due to health reasons. But, this year, I returned because of the capable assistance and concern of an unselfish and dedicated educator - Mr. Quentin Sayers. Mr. Sayers, former coach and teacher, has acted as assistant principal for me for so many years. He has opened many doors for the young people of Fort Ashby and has rightfully earned the respect from the school and community. The dignity of teaching and the joy of serving and helping others have been his primary concern for the past twenty-two years. Mr. Sayers was one who not only planted knowledge in the classroom, for he was able to awaken interest in the challenge of education, but also presented more than the wisdom from the page of a text book for he culti- vated the lesson of example in the youth of Fort Ashby High School. I extend my sincere appreciation to my ‘right hand man and assistant principal for making 1976 a progressive and memorable year. My thirty-four years of service began simply in an eight graded, one room schoolhouse at Barnum, W. Va. After serving as principal and teacher in the four room school at Short Gap, I came to Fort Ashby High School. My years in the changing educational profession have been challenging and rewarding. The seniors work, effort and dedication of many students, parents, teachers and personnel have made the process of education in our community possible. It was once stated that ''The character of a school is established by the faculty; the reputation of a school is determined by the students.'’ Education is a necessary doorway which you must enter and exit in order to travel the corridor of life. I sincerely hope we did our best to prepare you for the future you seek. The doors may close, but the memories and dreams will always remain. Congratulations and Good Luck, IptiincMgehe Asistat To students of Fort Ashby: The 1976 Seniors will have many pleasant and s=pleasant memories of Fort Ashby High School. Many of you are going to regret leaving your class- mates, and the carefree days you spent with them. - Ef Bat the best of your life lies ahead with careers, edu- : , A cation, marriage, homes of your own, and new riends. I hope we have done something for you at F.A.H.S. that will help to make this new life more produc- tive. May God bless each of you. I sincerely hope the future will bring happiness, peace, and prosperity. Since this is the last yearbook at Fort Ashby High School, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sudents, parents, teachers and administrators for being so kind and understanding to me and my family for the pest Lwenty-two years. A special thanks goes to Mr. Marker who was always willing to help me in amy way possible - to Mr. Riley who helped me so diligently in athletics and - to Mrs. Alkire, Mrs. Athey, and Mrs. Shepp, who worked so hard to make our athletic program and our school a success and a great place to work. To 2il my athletes, I hope each will forgive me for all the hell I gave them in twenty years of coaching. My sincere congratulations extend to all the seniors of Fort Ashby - past and present. THROUGH HEAT, RAIN, AND COLD BRICK AND MORTAR TOOK SHAPE WORLD, WE AWAIT YOU!!! 162 History of Fort Ashby High School In 1936 the eighteen acres which are now Fort Ashby High School and grounds was a vision in the minds of the Mineral County Board of Education. That vision grew into brick and mortar and then a school in 1939 and 1940. The first graduating class consisted of eighteen students, but they mad e a good start for our school. This year we have sixty-two graduates which is quite a long way from the first year. in 1974 we had our largest gradu- ating class which consisted of eighty-three members. Also, in 1974 we had our first early graduates (graduation in the eleventh grade). For the first few years, there wasn't much to work with in the way of equipment, but that first class managed to publish the first school paper, the ''Falashian'' and the annual yearbook, the ''FORTRESS''. Typing classes were limited; each students who wished to take the course had to provide his or her own typewriter. There was very little equipment in the science department, but the library was going good. The first road built to the school on the hill ’ was straight up over the hill, but it was later changed to the present location because the first road was too steep. The first faculty included three women and four men: Helen Pownall, Ruth Tonry, Betty Tabler, George Wilson, R. R. Lowe, John Foley and Roywatson Curry. Opposed to these seven, we now have twenty-three members on our faculty. Along with the faculty increase, there was also a number of additions to our activities. When Fort Ashby High School was first started the students enjoyed taffy pulls, skating parties, and trips to the Luke Paper Mill. The music for their prom was provided by a record player. Their sports consisted of a boys' and girls’ basketball team, track team, and three cheerleaders. In 1945 we started a football team. This was shortlived, how- ever, and only survived for a few years. Then in 1952 we started our baseball team. This is one sport that still survives. In 1965 and 1968 our boys on the basketball team went to State. Activities at Fort Ashby now include track, cross-country, National Honor Soci- ety, Future Teachers of America, Future Homemakers of America, class plays, base- ball, basketball, intramural, yearbook, newspaper, chorus, band, dances, talent show, Future Business Leaders of America, and Future Farmers of America. The Vocational Technical Center has become a part of Fort Ashby High as much as it has become a part of most of the schools in Mineral County. About seven years ago this school was opened to teach trades. About ninety students from Fort Ashby are now enrolled in this program. As you can see, Fort Ashby High School has come a long way since that first year. This may be the last year there will be a Fort Ashby High, but it will still live in the memo- ries of all who attended it. He Said MALL si ig SU. MALE oP ABELL 14 oa i MUlHihen LAMA AMLDA . They certainly have accom- plished many of the school's needs by carrying out the ‘projects set forth for the past thirty-four years. This school year started in full swing by donating $445.50 to help build an outside basketball court at the high school. Last year they helped to purchase a new piano for the grade school. The association has also purchased first aid sup- plies, playground equipment, library books, projec- tor machines, draperies for windows, seeding play area at the grade school, building outside basketball courts at both grade schools and many, many other school needs. In the school year 1955-56, Mr. Russell Adams was president; Mr. Lawrence Fout, shop teacher and many faithful P.T.A. members built the high school library check-out desk and completed the building of eight tables for the hot lunch room at the grade school. At the same time, backdrops for the stage at the high school were built. The following year Mr. Adams was elected presi- dent again and Mr. Fout, shop teacher, headed a committee and built five tables with built-in sewing machines for the Home Economics department. To all the good people who have belonged to our P.T.A. year after year, it is impossible to list ever- yone who has contributed in any way. But, we leave you as a combined high and grade school P.T.A. organization, thanking everyone who has given of their time and talents in helping to improve Fort Ashby High and Grade schools in the past years. Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be it was all so simple then, Or has time rewritten every line. If we had the chance to do it all again, Tell me? Could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet, What's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget. So, it's the laughter we will remember, Whenever we remember the way we were; the way we were.
