Top Left: Yes Carleen and LeAnne, it’s time to wake-up! Kelly Heeren tries to explain something to Beth and Tania. Just what have you been up to, Chris? Did you find what you’re looking for Amy? My, what a pretty Little Red Riding Hood you make, Tim! Top (L to R): Carolyn Leek says she’s got you! Beth Bernhard looks eager about fruit sales, as Eden Turner and Kelly Heeren await their orders. Smiling makes people wonder what you’ve been up to, right Dawn? “Happy Birthday to you,” was an embarrassing tune for Eden Turner and Julie Coffman as they were surprised to hear they had a new birthday. 3 What a Year! Top (L to R): Margaret, Angie, and Nancy are in deep conversation. “Thumbs up ’ says Cardinal Mascot Mike Dieken. The Freshman skit was “gonged” as usual. Cardinal offense scored in the beginning, but couldn’t pull through in the end. This year’s Homecoming Game against the Mount Morris Mounders was a hard fought battle. Forreston’s Mike Noone scored the first points of the game with a touchdown and the extra point. However, the Mounders came back to win with a score of 7-21. Sports at Forreston High School are an important part of each students high school years. Winning, of course, is an important goal that every team hopes to accomplish, but learn- ing to work together with other people and sharing respon- sibility is just as important. Students who choose to par- ticipate in Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Track, or Baseball, carry a sense of pride that students from other schools aren’t as fortunate to experience. Win or lose, Forreston is proud of its athletes and grateful to the Athletic Boosters and the com- munity for their support. The Cardinal Varsity Volleyball team finished their season with a conference record of 3-14 and an overall record of 8-28. This years’s team was paced by 11 seniors and 4 juniors. The team was led by the setting of Bryn McCabe and Peggy Stevens. Angie Mullen and Renee Green led the offense with their hard spikes along with Eden Turner and Rosie DeVries (most consistent servers). The team competed in two tournaments: Lena-Winslow and Franklin Center where they placed 4 th. The Cardinals entered regionals at their best to beat Aquin 15-6. But in the semi- finals, they lost to Dakota 8-15 and 10-15 after a tough fight. The girls determination was evident in the several close matches played this year. One instance of such determination I’ll remember, besides having such a large team, was Peggy Stevens blocking the spike of Byron’s Laura Hayunga and falling down after she suc- cessfully stopped the volleyball. Coach Lori Wellington Junior Renee Green reaches to hit that “perfect spike”. This year’s Frosh-Soph volleyball team compiled a 5- 13 overall record and finished 5-9 in the Mid-Northern Con- ference. The Team was led by six sophomores and seven Freshmen, who this year had the opportunity to play in a Freshman Experience at Lena-Winslow. This was a morning of volleyball where the team beat Mt. Carroll, but lost to Winnebago and Lena-Winslow. The team, who was led by servers Rhonda Meyers and Holly Erdmann, beat Stillman Valley, Polo, Mt. Morris, and Oregon, twice with the help of spikers Angie Bowers and Car- rie Straight. We had an enjoyable season and are looking forward to next year. A very young team approached the starting line to begin the 1985 Cross Country season. Bruce Pannkuk, the only senior, showed great leadership. During the season the team compiled a 6 3 dual meet record, won the Forreston Invita- tional, finished second in both the Winnebago Invitational and the Mid-Northern Con- ference meet, and finished third in the Oregon Open. (86 37 overall record) The team was able to put it all together at the end of the season by capturing the school’s first Regional Championship. Above: Senior Bruce Pannkuk runs with determination. 23 Running down state this year was much more meaningful and exciting than my Sophomore year. This year I was able to run with my teammates as a team and not just an individual. There’s a few moments in cross country I’ll never forget, such as Barry get- ting lost on the run from German Valley to Forreston, and Coach Bennett calling hotel security because he thought our luggage was stolen. My cross country career was based on hard work and determination but it all paid off in the end. —Mark Gassman )UNTRY 24 1985 Frosh-Soph Football 1985 Varsity Football Forr. The Varsity Cheerleading squad entered the Lincoln Mall Com petition of Freeport, in August of 1985. Two floor cheers and three sidelines were required for the contest and because of their per- formance, they received ribbons. To improve their skills, some of the cheerleaders attended gym- nastics class at the YMCA. The USCA (United States Cheerleading Association) Cheerleading Camp at N1U in Dekalb, was attended by the Frosh-Soph squad. All six members were involved in the four day program where they learned several new sidelines and floor cheers. Due to their efforts, the squad received the “Most Im- proved Squad” award. On February 28th, both squads par- ticipated in a Kick-A-Thon for MDA along with the Pom-Pon squad. Each girl asked for pledges and donations and received an amount of money according to how many kicks they did. —i j ■ i - «r— i m i-'vi.mi Above: Senior Cheerleaders are Kelly Heeren, Laurie Empen, and Rosie DeVries. FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS FHS 27 This year’s basketball season started off slowly, but picked up speed. With each game, you could see improvement which was great considering the team’s inexperience since there was only one returning starter. Even though the team saved their best for the end of the season, two home games, one against Pecatonica and Oregon, produced 25 and 24 point victories. But the biggest thrill came in the first game of the Regionals when Forreston came back from a 16 point deficit to beat the 1 seed Franklin Center The Frosh-Soph basketball season opened with a non-conference game against Stockton. Even though we looked like we had never seen a basketball before, we won easily 61-45. Then our first conference game was against Mt. Morris where we looked a little better against them than we did against Stockton and won 65-41. The second con- ference game was home with Polo. When remembering what they did to us in football and the fact that this was our first home game, I knew we were in for a fight. When I got to school and saw my team doing cartwheels and all sorts of strange gymnastics, 1 knew we were in trou- ble and the final score 41 -65 proved it. Winnebago was next and added a loss to our record with a score of 46-55. I had a score to settle with Oregon from football, even though we beat them. It was a close down- to-the-horn game, but we pulled it out 39-36. We lost our next two games, Byron 38-43 and a non- conference to Aquin 56-61. But I felt that was the turning point in our season because we really played well that game with a lot of hustle and desire. Our next game we beat Stillman Valley 47-42, but lost our next two to Pecatonica 50-59 (which we shouldn’t have lost) and Rochelle 52-63. We won six games in a row Shannon 67-29, Mt. Morris 63-43, Winnebago 42-40, Polo 66- 44. Pecatonica 63-41, and Oregon who had a 20-5 record. Unfor- tunatley, we fell 2 points short in the semi-finals game against Mt. Morris. Regardless of that fact, the enthusiasm and spirit of the For- reston fans and cheerleaders made the team feel as if they were playing in the championship game. Hopefully, the success that we had at the end of the season will give us the incentive to work harder for the next season because we will have 9 returning Varsity players. Coach Bill Dehority 56-49. We were on a roll but our winning streak ended with Bryon 39-61. All was not lost because we won our last game 55-35 against Stillman. I was pleased with the good pro- gress made throughout the season. The players got to the point where they were willing to fight and work hard to win every game. We should have won a couple of games we lost but that’s usually the case. But all in all, I was very happy with the season. Coach John Pilcher Above: Senior Darrell Osterloo is the MVP. In conference play the Lady Cards had two exciting games in which they defeated rival Winnebago 59-49 and 75-71. The Cards Varsity team finished second in the conference with a 11-3 record behind first place Byron Tigers. The Frosh-Soph team finished with an 8-11 overall record. Student Coun- cil sponsored a Spirit Contest, which the Seniors won, took donations to buy gifts for the children of St. Francis of Freeport, and held a “pie in the face” contest. This brought in many results since the teachers of FHS were the victims. Spanish Club had a Spanish Week and toured the Ethnic Fair in Milwaukee. Photo Club and Yearbook were constantly busy trying to meet deadlines. Art had several of its students win in the Small-Time Two- Bits art show and the Scholastic art show. FHA held FHA week and collected for the March of Dimes. Whiteside had many “Student of the Month” awards. The Lionettes per- formed during football and basketball games as did the Pep Band. Chorus and Band were busy with contest and Madrigals and Show Choir toured the area with their shows. So you see, FHS is a very busy school. Spanish 3 students take time out for a picture. Something new this year was tried to improve school spirit. An ac- tivity was held on Fridays and each class had to sign up people to par- ticipate. At the end of the year, the class with the most points won a piz- za party or a week in the lunch line first. They received the Spirit Stick award for being high spirited. This year they held a contest to find a mascot for the squad. It was awarded to Monica Kuelling. One of their most outstanding perfor- mances was uniquely choreographed to the song “Wham Rapp”. In this routine they dressed up as punk rockers. 47 ABOVE: Concert Band and Marching Band have shown their high school spirit by perfor- ming at various activities such as Homecoming and Miss Flame parades, concerts, and sports functions. They announced their presence at games by playing our school song “Loyalty”. Mr. Braker and Joelle Swalve find that directing the band had its moments. 48 Fred Barthel, blows his horn. The class of ’86 is definitely a class with class—a kind all their own. After all, they have been through four years of school and know the routine very well. Maybe they know it too well since they have had four different math teachers in four years. But that doesn’t stop them. Each Senior has a cer- tain characteristic nobody else has. They realize that this year is the last year of their high school years and somehow that fact pulls everyone together. The Senior year is a year that will never be forgotten. 78 79 Until We Meet Again Friends are forever, And the mem’ries we shared together, Help us to understand why We must say good-bye. Cherish the laughter we shared Thoughts of those who really cared, Will make the good times last, Until We Meet Again. Do thoughts of happy moments Fill your heart and mind, And let you keep What you don't want to leave behind? It’s easy to forget what true happiness is. But as long as you have friends, That's the only true happiness there is. We all know good-byes are hard to say. 'Cuz we don’t know when we’ll meet again. But our mem 'ries will make moments like these Last for always and forever, forever. Jroy d3in Lt. ev You came to us in the summer; you left us in the spring. In that time we knew your distinctive laugh, your mischievious eyes, your face that changed from handsome to comical at a whim. You touched us then and still your touch lingers. You have given us an awareness of life we did not need to face before. Spring is a time of growth, and you have helped us all to grow. And for that we are grateful. You were chosen by God to teach us, and you will always be special. As you are looking down, remember we are looking up. $une 21, 1966 Watch 10, 1986 80 l-4i Edel Turnef. PIERRE AND THOMAS After waiting for more than one year, finally the papers, which allow me to spend a school year in the (J.S. arrived. Now I had to decide within three weeks if I wanted to leave my family and friends for this long time. Throughout the last wonderful months there was no reason to regret my decision to come. In the first couple weeks, however, I was lost in the big country across the ocean. The language I talked (it was supposed to be British-English) wasn’t very useful and the way everybody else talked made me use words like “what?” and “I beg your pardon” all the time. About everything was new and different, but that's exactly the reason why this year was so valuable. To live in another country, to be a member of a new family, to meet people and become friends with them, and to learn more about life, are just some of the experiences I enjoyed and wouldn't have wanted to miss. Servus und auf Wiederschau'n aus Muenchen (Hauptstadt des Bieres) Thomas Theil O.K. here we are. This year is now almost finished. That means my senior year and also my year in the U.S. I was asked to write something for the yearbook but I didn’t know where to start. I think I start with my ar- rival in New York. As I left the airport I was overwhelm- ed with new impressions. Everything was so different from Germany. The buildings, cars, even the food. Then came the first schoolday in a totally new school system. I have to admit that I had quite a few problems fittings in, but thanks to the people it finally worked out fine. And then came my first contact with the All-American sport “Football' . I really wanted to learn it. And I did learn something, it is not that easy to play football. Sometimes I was even afraid to lose some of my parts. So after the season I recognized that I was still alive. Then I went out for track and I liked that too. To come to an end I finally want to thank all the people I got to know (especially dur- ing the senior class trip) and those who helped me here in the U.S. I will always remember this year as a wonderful experience which also, yes I can say, helped me and I will always remember you guys. Good luck to all of you. ‘Tschuss” Pierre Bene Top I eft: Mike Boelkens gives Amy Frey a free ride. Above: Sea World Ski Team—what a bunch of hunks! The class of 86 followed in the footsteps of many previous classes by traveling to Orlando, Florida, for Spring Break. A chartered bus from Morrison, driven by owner Marv Wiersema, drove the class through Indiana, Kentucky, and stopped at Chat- tanooga. Tennessee on the first day, Saturday, March 30. The next day was spent traveling through Georgia and finally Orlando, Florida where the Continental Plaza became home for the 3-day stay. The first day was spent at Walt Disney World or Epcot Center. Sea Wrorld was the second day followed by Wet-n-Wrild Wednesday morning, Daytona Beach that afternoon and St. Augustine for the night. With relentless good-byes but special memories, their trip home began Thursday stopping at Nashville, Tennessee, to sleep and heading for For- reston, Illinois, on Friday. Days of getting up early and going to bed late (PARTYING) as well as seeing new sights and peo- ple, created a week full of memories and stronger ties between friends. The Garter Ceremony — from gentlemen to animals. This year’s Prom was held at the Brandywine in Dixon, Illinois. A change in music as well as the date were made. Instead of a live band, a disc jockey (Y95) was the music entertainment for the evening. And in- stead of being held on a Thursday evening, Prom was on a Saturday, May 3rd. Peach and gold bows decorated the beams and lights wrapped in grapevine weavings welcomed guests as they arrived. Candles placed inside of grapevine wreaths were the center- pieces for the tables. Senior Joe Stukenberg plac- ed tenth in the 800. The Class of 86 said its final farewell to Forreston High School on Friday May 30th. A variety of emotions, such as sorrow, happiness and pride filled the hearts of the graduates. Memories of the past four years of FHS raced through their minds as the Senior Ensemble sang “Until We Meet Again . Its words seemed to fit every one of the graduates. Relatives, friends, and faculty were packed in a hot gym to help celebrate the occasion. But before the graduates left, confetti and whippersnappers helped the graduating class of 1986, leave with a bang. Top Right: Hold on to that diploma with your life, Beth. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonged to him, and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed you most you would leave me. ” The LORD replied, My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you. ” And like the man in the poem, we too, as high school students carry two sets of footprints: one is our own and the other, all the memories we carry with us. This yearbook will hopefully symbolize those footprints. Of course, each of us will interpret each page differently, but our goal was to help trigger ideas to make it possible to look back one more time and laugh or maybe even cry. It’s important to move ahead, but the past is important to look back on and learn from. “The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.” May all of us move forward to accomplish our dreams and never lose sight of the memories which helped to create them. A special thanks to the yearbook staff, photo club, Forreston Journal, and all the friends and teachers who helped create this yearbook and a “Year to Remember.” (X'L'LAaX 7 y IjlJJjljxD 104 %
