Throughout the year, they’ve participated in several parades, and have performed at boys and girls basketball games. They’ve also managed to bring home a few trophies which have made up for the many hard hours of practice and work worthwhile. They really appreciate the support and enthusiasm given throughout the year. 31 1983-84 Pom Pon captains: Jackie Vietmeier, Lisa Coffman, and Jodi Vietmeier. The 1983-84 Cheerleading season startd out with tryouts in the spring of 1983. The Varsity Cheerleaders had a “new” option this year of trying out for either a football, or basketball cheerleader, or for both. The frosh-soph varsity squads practiced through the sum- mer getting ready for a great season of cheering. Their enthusiasm spirit con- tinues throughout the school year as they unstilled this same spirit into the student body and received terrific support by all! They went on to compile a 10 and 2 dual meet record. The disappointment of the season came when the Sectional score was announced and the team came out with 180 points, just 4 points too many to go to State. The team's overall record was an impressive 81 and 25. The two team members to receive awards were, Senior Darren Hayunga—Leadership Award and Junior Tom Schwartz—Most Valuable Player. SENIORS Cardinal Left side: L. Stykel, J. Snapp, R. DeVries, R. Ratmeyer, Coach Jagoda; Right side: K. Frazier, C. Muller, J. Rogers, A. Wubbena, P. Egan. 40 Volleyball The 1983-84 Varsity volleyball team had a very successful season this year with an overall record of 14-4 and a conference record of 12-4. The Cardinals tied for second place in the conference. The nine-player team consisted of four seniors and five juniors. Senior, Renee DeVries, was voted by her teammates as the recipient of the Leadership Award. Penny Egan was selected as the most valuable player . Renee DeVries was unanimously voted to the all-conference team along with Penny Egan. The leadership and support of all the seniors including Renee Ratmeyer and Jodie Snapp will also be miss- ed next year. 1st Row: K. Meuris, K. Heeren, C. Frank, A. Mullen, A. Pierson. T. The 1983 Fighting Cardinals played exciting defense and offense all year and continued improvement in our kicking game. Nineteen members made up the Varsity Team: 11 seniors, 6 juniors, and 2 sophomores. They finished with a season record of 5-4, and a con- ference record of 4-3, Forreston’s first winning season since 1979. Dedication to team work speaks well for the 1983 Fighting Car- dinals as fundamentals and conditioning and continued improvement were stressed from the opening day of practice to the final game. Perhaps the biggest thrill for the Forreston Community was the homecoming victory over Oregon by a score of 20-8. After the season, Senior players received post-season awards: All-Conference: Defense: Keith Meuris: Line Backer (unanimous) John Arshem: Defensive End (unanimous) Offense: Jeff Hayunga: Quarterback Jeff Klock: End All-Area: 1st Team: Keith Meuris: Defensive Linebacker Special Mention: John Arshem: Defensive End Jeff Klock: Offensive End Honorable Jeff Hayunga: Quarterback Mention: The team players voted Keith Meuris as '‘MVP”, and John Arshem received the Leadership Award. Jeff Hayunga set a career record for Passing Yards with 1,289. Kent Frazier was our leading rusher with 413 yards, and 5 TD’s. Troy Binkley led the team in attempts with 101, with a 3.5 average, along 42 with 4 TD’s. Full of Pride 1st Row: Mgr. S. Schwarze, K. Vietmeier, S. Soltow, C. Feller, J. Schlamp, M. Lewis. K. However the receipe also included: unselfish team play, stout defense, and rugged rebounding. If you com- bine all of this, you will come up with a record of 21 and 8 Conference Co-Champs, and the Regional Championship. 45 Lady Cardinals The 83-84 Lady Cardinals completed the best won-lost record in the history of Forreston girl’s basketball with a 23 and 3 record. The team also earned its 6th consecutive Mid-Northern con- ference championship witha 13 and 1 record and placed 3rd in the Harlem Classic, under the direc- tion of Coach Rich Bennett. Several records were broken during the season including the most points made in a career by Pen- ny Egan and the best field goal percentage by Renee DeVries. Both girls were also chosen as unanimous all conference players. Coach Karen Benson guided the Fr So team to all and 3, 3rd conference finish and a 13 and 6 over all record. The team placed 5th at the Galena Invitational, 4th at the Ogle County Meet, 3rd at the Byron Invitational, 6th in Conference and 11th in our 23 team Sectional. Girls Track will be losing a fine athlete with the gradua- tion of Holly Swalve. Denekas The 1984 version of the “Running Red track team completed the season in fine form, placing several individuals and relay teams on the prestigious Top 5 club, and breaking 3 school records. Despite having to battle miserable weather throughout the season, Coach Herkert and Pearson were pleased with the teams ac- complishments, and are eagerly awaiting next years team, as many of the fine athletes will be returning. Only four Seniors took part in track this year—Jeff Hayunga in the sprints, Evan DeWall and Darren Hayunga in the distance events, and Troy Binkley in the discus and sprint relays. Their talent and leadership will be missed. Among those turning in record breaking perfor- mances this year were—Binkley, with a new school record in the discus throw; Travis Waack with a new Frosh Soph school record in the pole vault; and Jerry Funk with a new school and con- ference record in the 800 meter run. Jerry also represented Forreston in the State Meet in Charleston, placing a respectable 10th in the 800. 50 Jerry Funk 800m State Qualifier 10th in State 51 1st Row: M. Lewis, S. Hamm, D. Empen, T.
