The team was led by Seniors Dave McMorris and Debbie Whited. The varsity team finished second in the Forreston Invita- tional behind conference champion Stillman Valley. We also finished a very respectable fifth in the Regional ahead of Winnebago, Princeton, and other good teams. Sophomore Jerry Funk emerged as the number one runner at the end of the season. Jerry finished eleventh in the Regional and qualified for the Sectional, where there were 129 runners competing. He placed 66th in a very strong field. The FR SO compiled a very impressive 29 and 6 over all record. The team won the Mid- Northern meet by placing five runners in the top seven. We also placed 4th in the 22 team Am- boy Invitational, and second in the Oregon Invitational. Coach Bennett and the team will miss 4 year runners Dave McMorris and Debbie Whited. Seniors: Debbie Whited and Dave McMorris 43 1982 FOOTBALL The Cards opened up the 82 campaign by defeating their first four opponents. Exciting action and some frustrations characterized the second half of the season. Unfortunately, the Cards dropped their remaining five games and finished 4-5. They displayed pride, discipline and teamwork every time they crossed the white lines of the game field. The team, consisting of 9 seniors and 12 juniors, ended the season outscoring their op- ponents 155-97 and recording three shutouts through a “Swarm defense. Four of our nine seniors received post season honors as they were named to the Mid-Northern All Conference Team. Kevin Frazier—Defensive Linebacker, Rory Wiederholtz — Offensive Lineman, Dan Bronkema — Defensive Lineman and Todd Smith—Kicker, who was also named to the Rockford Register Star Class A All-Area Team. Never out of conten- tion in a game, the cagers showed the deter- mination and second effort necessary to be competitive in the tough Mid-Northern Conference. Relying on quickness, sharp ball handling, and teamplay the hardcourt men provided an exciting brand of basketball for the Forreston faithful. With 6 conference wins and 8 losses, the 1982-83 team placed 2 of it's 6 seniors on the all-area team. They were Joe Buttel and Kevin Frazier and both receive The Fr. TRACK—1983 This year’s “Running Red” track team posted another fine performance. Team wise, the car- dinals finished 2nd at the Landers-Loomis Relays, 2nd at the Cardinal Relays, and 5th at the prestigious Forreston Invitational Relays. We hope for good things to come in the future since only 3 seniors are leaving. However, these seniors will be missed because they contributed a great deal to the team. Ray Pepper anchored the sprint relays and ran a consistently good open 200M. Joe But- tel was also a member of those spring relays as well as a long jumper and triple jumper. Dave McMorris came on strong at the end of the season helping the 3200M relay team finish well and posting a personal best time in the 1600M run. Jerry Funk represented Forreston at the state meet this year in Charleston. He qualified by winn- ing the sectional 400M race at Oregon beating numerous opponents. 52 Bottom Row left to right: Mgrs. Wubbena. The 1983 Girls’ Track season was a pretty good one. Six members of the team went to the state meet in Charleston in three events. Overall, we had a winning season. The team took 5th in the conference meet, 2nd in the Ogle County meet, 4th at districts, 2nd at Galena, and 4th at the Savanna meet. We look forward to another victorious season next year, and we wish the three departing seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors. 54 Top left-State Qualifiers 800 M Relay: Sherri Koeller. This well rounded background has given us many exciting and not so exciting days at FHS. As a whole, our class has accomplished many unusual feats. For instance, statistics have proven that our class has been responsible for the retirement of more than 13 Forrestville-Valley faculty members during our entire educational enrollment in district 221. Besides that enlightening information, our class won the very first and prestigious pop-stacking contest. Although these are only two examples of our entire class’s unique reputation, there have been many individual victories in the areas of athletics, music, and academics. As editors of this yearbook, we have tried to preserve the memories of our years at FHS. Our hard working advisor, photo club and staff has made this yearbook a very eventful, interesting, and un- forgettable task for both of us.
