The varsity had a respectable season. The Forreston Invita- tional was again claimed by Forreston talent. At the Amboy Districts, the team placed eighth, but Steve DeVries placed fourth for sole runner. He advanced to the Woodstock Section- als where he ran in 86th place. The varsity team ran under the four year senior leadership of Darrell DeWoll and Dick Ben- nett. The frosh-soph couldn’t have planned a more perfect sea- son. Winning the Dixon, Mt. Morris, Forreston, Amboy and Oregon Invitationals helped to arouse the Cardinal morale. Furthermore, taking the Mid-Northern Conference gave the team a grand sense of accomplishment. The girl’s team added a new depth to the Cardinal squad. These six runners accumulated an extreme effort which pro- vided them with the Mid-Northern conference title. Seniors: D. DeWall and D. Bennett HUT ONE HUT TWO The 1980 edition of the Forreston Cardinal football team provided many exciting moments this fall. The over all season results did not reflect the spirit displayed by the varsity players. The team can best be described as being a very coachable. dedicated, and hardworking group of young men. Inexperience was the highest hurdle that had to be conquered but, by the end of the season, some excellent individual records had been achieved. Senior quarterback, Dennis Osterloo, broke all exsisting passing records. Mark DeVries took the total team passing yards for the season. Members on the all-conference team include: Mark DeVries, Curt Timmer, Tony Zellers, and Special Mention, Dennis Osterloo. 8 Top Row, L. to R.: B. Sigafus, M. DeVries, D. Osterloo, J. Poopen, B. They started out the season with a six game winning streak, went into a mid- season slump, but managed to bring back the wins at the end of the season. The varsity team finished with an 11-8 win-loss record and Frosh-Soph finished with 6-9. The team was led by six seniors, who have all played for four years. The seniors are Janese Palmer, Martha Muller, Teresa Smith, Jane Cook, Pam Kaney, and Sharia Thomp- son, Rounding off the team were nine juniors: Beth Dorsey, Nanette Ross, Kristy Smith, Ginger Waack, Julie Cook, Michelle Rouzan, Brenda Korf, Jill DeVries, and Teresa Gillingham. Two of our seniors were given the distinctive honor of all-conference players—they were Janese Palmer with an unanimous decision, and Martha Muller, honorable men- tion. Top Row, L. to R.: J. With only one return- ing letterman back from last years squad, the Cards were not expected to do well. They finished in third place in the Pearl City tournament, third place in our own prestigious Holi- day Tournament, and are cur- rently in second place in the tough Mid-Norther Conference fight. Having won eleven games thus far the Cardinals are setting their sights high on Conference and regional play the last half of the season. The 1981 girls track season has been the most successful ever for Forreston High School. With the smallest team, in the last six years, the team may have lacked depth—accounting for the three win and four loss record in dual, triangular and quadrangular meets; however, the spirit and the quality of the runners oil this years team really showed in the larger meets—improving with every meet, starting with the twelve team Landers-Loomis invitational, where we placed 5th all the way to the district meet, when we earned enough points to place second in the tough 21 team field. To top an already successful season, seven girls, in five events, quali- fied to compete in the state meet. Seniors Sharia Thompson and Kallie Wichman in the high jump and 800 relay. Sophomores Candy Higar, Sherri Koeller and Deb Whited in the 1600 relay, with Sherri also in the 800 relay and the 100 m. low hurdles and Freshman Holly Swalve in the 1600 relay, 800 relay, and 200 m. dash. The highlight of the sea- son had to be hurdler Sherri Koeller finishing 4th in her second show- ing off of the Class A Girls Track Meet. We are losing two very valuable seniors. Sharia Thompson and Kallie Wichman, but to our advantage they were the only seniors on the team which indicates another successful season for the girls next year. 18 State Qualifiers in 800 Relay: S. The 1981 Track Team par- ticipated in quite a few large meets this year, taking full advantage of the nice weather. Though having only nine Jun- iors and Seniors, we managed to score points and be competi- tive in all meets, including sending a mile relay team to State. Looking ahead, this years Frosh-Soph team con- sisted of 22 members, 15 of which were Freshmen. If they continue to perform as well in the future as they did this year, they will make a tough Varsity squad in a few years. Standouts on the Varsity squad this year were the Mile Relay team of Keith Acker- man, Darrell DeWail, Gary Groenewold, and Steve DeVries, all of whom scored points in other events. Junior sprinter Todd Lindstrom also supplied depth where needed as did Sophomores Ray Pepper and Joe Buttel. 21 Frist Row L. to R.: J. Lynch, K. Goodrich, P. Fortune. Second Row: J. Cook, Manager, A. The Forreston Cardinals start the baseball season with a sin- gle game on May 22nd against Rochelle. The Cardinals were conference co-champs and tournament champs of 1980, and they hope to pick up right where they left off in 1980. The Cards return seven letterman from last years squad. Seniors participating in their final season as Cardinals are: infielder and pitcher. Mark DeVries; infielder, Kirk Kilker; infielder, outfielder, pitcher, Darrell DeWall; outfielder. Tony Zellers; pitcher, and infielder, Denny Osterloo; outfielder, and infielder Rick Rucker. Other returning letterman are Junior, Steve DeVries, pitcher, outfielder, and infielder, and Sopho- more, Jerry Jacobs, catcher. Good Luck to the Cards of 1981. This was the first time in their history they achieved that distinction since Forreston joined the Mid-Northern Conference 11 years ago. Picked to finish seventh or eighth at the start of the year, the Cardinals earned the respect of the fans and opponents by playing strong defense and executing team play. The Cardi- nals surprised everybody in the con- ference but themselves. In regional play they gained the championship game for the first time in many years with two victories, the second one coming over tall and tal- ented Malta Team. The following eve- ning in the third regional game they fell 1 point short of winning their first regional title in 23 years. —Coach Antonacci 26 King: Jeff Brubaker. Queen: Laurie Akins. This year, the Girl's Cardinal team made a dream of Coaeh Rich Bennett’s, and their own. come true by becoming the first Forreston team in history to go to the state finals in Champaign. Although the team lost their first state game, they presented quite a thrill in the community. After winning the Mid-Northern Conference title for the third consecutive year with a 13-1 conference record and a 21-3 overall record, the first step towards Champaign was the Regionais at Polo. The Lady Cards walked away with the Regional title after easily defeating Polo and taking a one point win over Ml. Morris. The next step was to go to Stillman Valley for the Sectional games. By beating Mendota in the first game (60-38). the girls earned the right to play for the Sectional championship against Sterling-New man. The team kept up their winning streak and defeated their opponent by a whopping ten points (60-50), and became history—the first F.H.S. Sectional Championship ever!!! The final step towards Champaign was to play Morrison at the Super-Sectional in Oregon. The Cards again contin- ued to be undefeated and amid the confetti and cheers, beat the Mustangs 53-46. Forreston went crazy! Pep sessions, posters, parent cheerleaders, verbal words of encouragement, and so much more cheered the girls on to the huge Assembly Hall of University of Illinois in Champaign. The day before the game, accom- panied by state police, the girls left for the big game. Hundreds of fans met in the huge gymnasium to watch the Forreston Cardinals take on Quincy-Notre Dame. The first quarter of the game was a slow one for the Cards as they fell behind 12-3, but they started to get their act together in the second period and narrowed the score to 20-15 at the half. Although they cut down the lead to two points the second half of the game, the Lady Cards lost 49-39 to Notre Dame who would go on to finish second in the state. When the team returned from Champaign, they were met by police cars, fire trucks, and carloads of fans. After a ride through out the community on the fire trucks, a reception was held in the gym. Speeches were made, tears of joy were shed, gifts were presented, and memories were made. Many honors were earned by several players: Janese Palmer, Senior Center: All Conference Team for the second year in a row ; All Area Rockford-Morning Star Second Team; Rockford-Morning Star Player of the Week; Team leading reboundcr with an average of 9.4 rebounds per game; Named the Most Valuable Player on the team by her teammates; and averaged 13.3 points per game. FLORIDA '81 Hopes were lost when Mr. Tobin told the class, the fruit money was embezzled. But, we still managed to make it to Florida, to everyone’s relief. We all had a super time along with quite a burn (espe- cially Robin Lori). No one will forget the long wait for a ride at Walt Disney, the excitment of speeding down a long ramp and hitting the cool water at Wet-n-Wild, and the thrill of seeing the ocean for the first time. Even the long bus rides left us with many memories. Remembering the fun and laughter, The problems and the fears, And watching all our memories grow Throughout our high school years. The memories of the dances And the new friends that we've met, Vacations, teachers, talking And exams we'd rather forget. Yes, high school days are precious but brief. Where all your dreams come true; It is not the end, but the beginning Of a life we'll start anew. Joy Shefstad Teen Magazine ... NOBODY DOES IT BETTER ... National Honor Society. Front row: S. Arshem, Robin Gronewold. 88 Can you imagine? In 1977, just four years ago the class of 1981 started their journey in the treacherous high school?! As timid freshmen, we stood in groups thinking about the four long-long years ahead of us. Now, we stand around looking back at our HIGH SCHOOL DAYS.” It just doesn’t seem possible for those years to slip by so fast. Of course, we have a lot of memories that we will take with us. They started when we were freshmen and continued right to the end. We began our freshmen year great, with a first place on our Homecoming float. Our great float building skill didn’t stop there. We went on to win first place a total of three years. Just that would be enough of an accomplishment for some classes but not ours. We demanded good performances from our music department and they granted us our wish. The band started early with competition in Iowa. (That week will never be forgotten-especially the Cheetos-right, Lynn or one-two-you know what to do- ears up.) They continued with performances at Miss Flame, Homecoming, football games, basketball games, pep assemblies, and concerts. The chorus also contributed a lot by having superb concerts, fantastic Madrigal Dinners, and an excellent musi- cal— Bye Bye Birdie.” But that still wasn’t enough. The class of 1981 had to prove itself in sports too. Oh, 80’s athletic department was great-playing in the football playoffs and having state qualifiers in track, but, that’s nothing compared to 81’s class. All the dreams of our sports’ fans were fulfilled as every team was a success: The Girls' Basketball Team playing at the Assembly Hall in Champaine, both the Girls’ and Boys’ Track Teams having state qualifiers, and the Boys’ Basketball Team being Co-Conference Champs. Who could ask for any- thing more? But that isn’t all that happened. That’s just the beginning. A new addition was added on which consisted of locker rooms, a weight room, and an all purpose room. The all purpose room was to be used for an informal study hall but would you believe this? This year they decided to drop informal study halls—our class is the first again. First to have just formal study halls, first in five years to have to take semester tests, and first to have our money embezzled. Yep, after working hard at an ice cream social, magazine sales, junior concessions, and fruit sales—no senior trip. Why did every thing have to happen to us? We had worked hard making record sales, finally getting enough money for our trip, and then our money had to be embezzled. It would’ve been worse—we could’ve been held hostage by the Iranians or shot at like President Reagan. But we survived because we had a lot of community support. We also had help from the Board and Mr. Gapinski and because of them we were able to get our money back and go to Florida. (That’s an experience we will never forget!!) And as each class published it yearbook, I would like to be the first to thank the yearbook staff for their dedication in getting the yearbook done. I realize it wasn’t easy having to do things over and over, but I think it was all worth it. Also a great big thanks to the photo club, Mrs. Grande, Mr. Hein (our first year Advisor), and every one that helped. I hope that you the readers have enjoyed this book because it was a lot of fun putting it together. But, as each fall denotes the beginning of a new class and school year, each spring is the departing of a class of friends. So, I wish you the best of luck in your future and I hope you establish many worthwhile firsts in your life. 90 91 SENIORS Ackerman, Keith 8. 9, 21. 77. 86. 88 Akins.
