R UNNIN’ RED The 1979 cross country team had a very successful season. They compiled a 33-11 record in the regular season losing to only 5 different class A teams. They advanced through the Winnebago District and ran in the Woodstock Marion Sec- tional where Mark Korf quali- fied for the state meet. The team also won the Forreston Invitational for the sixth straight year. The varsity team finished third in the Mid-Northern conference. Running on the varsity throughout most of the season were senior Mark Korf, winner of Dixon, Winnebago, Forreston, and Polo Invita- tionals and the Winnebago District, juniors Darrell DeWall, Dean Anderson, Dick Bennett, and sophomores Steve DeVries and Gary Groenewold. 35 Raymond. Forreston High School’s winning tradition was continued by the 1979 edition of the Fighting Car- dinal football team. A very tal- ented blend of seniors and juniors produced the fifth winning sea- son in a row. (8 wins-2 losses) an undisputed Mid-Northern Con- ference Championship, and the third appearance of the Cardinals in the I.H.S.A. football playoffs in its six year history. Again, teamwork, (a total of 23 men started during the season) and individual pride were the founda- tion upon which was built another successful season. 37 BUMP, SET, SPIKE! Sealed: G. Waack. M. Daniels The 1979 girls Volleyball teams finished with records of 2-15 for varsity and 12-4 for Frosh-Soph. Although the varsity record alone does not reflect a successful season, there were some achievements that do make the efforts worthwhile. Individual skill development was evident in every game throughout the season. And with seven returning players for next year’s varsity team the skill development will ensure an improved season record for 1980. The Fr-soph. team enjoyed a winning season this year under the direction of Mrs. Pam Meyers in her first year as F-S Coach. The varsity team seniors included: starting setter, Deanne DeWall, starting spikers. Sue Smith and Carolyn Higar, setter Martina Romanowski and spiker Ellen Poppen. All in all, whether we won or lost our games, the season was an enjoyable one. K. Benson Bottom: T. Howald. J. Palmer. E. Poppen. P. Kaney. M. Muller. Second Row: C. Higar. S. Thompson, M. The team tied for the Mid-Northern conference cham- pionship for the second straight year with a record of 12 and 2. Their overall record was 16 and 4, and they averaged beating their opponent by 17 points. The team was made up of nine varsity players led by unanimous all- conference selection Deanne DeWall who was also named to the Rockford Morning Star all-area team. Carolyn Higar was special men- tion all conference, and special mention on the Star team. Janese Palmer also made special mention on the Star team, and was named all conference. Rounding out the roster were Marlene Collman, Mar- tha Muller, Jane Cook, and Jill DeVries. Also, Gloria Muller. The Fr So team also had a good season. Coach Karen Benson guided the team to a 14 and 4 record and a second place conference finish with a 10 and 4 record. The managers did a great deal to help the team this year. They were senior Kari Rust, Gina Janssen, Sue Cornelius, and Lisa Meeks. Tak- ing care of statistics and news releases were Beth Smith, Jackie Swalve, and Cindy Faist. 41 CARDINAL VARSITY: SECOND TO NONE L. to R.—J. Vietmeier, C. Longamore, C. DeWall, T. F.ngebretson, G. Bernhard, S. Stykel, D. Bronkema, R. Turner. S. Frank. This year Forreston Varsity Basketball team compiled an overall record of 17 wins and 9 losses, despite having more injuries in one season than most schools do in a year. In conference play the Cardinals were 10-4, good for second place in the Mid- Northern. They went through the first half of the conference slate 7-0 but then inju- ries and road games accounted for them being nosed out of first place. All conference honors went to Gregg Bernhard and Scott Stykel and all tourna- ment honors (Forreston Holiday) went to Tim Engebretson. It was a fine group of individuals, senior dominated, that hus- tled and fought for all their victories. They played many an exciting game and gave everyone many thrills this season. That's how long we’ve spent together in the halls of Forreston High School, living, working and growing together as the Class of 1980. The many sports offered here have enriched the seasons of each year, for both players and spectators. Football provided some of the excitement of our first year at FHS when the varsity team qualified for the quarter finals of the stale playoffs, their efforts culminating in that heartbreaking game against Fulton, which was echoed this year when our own varsity players fought valiantly against mboy. but couldn't quite pull it off. Volleyball. Track and Cross Country, and Baseball also provided much excitement. And who could forget the BasketbaII teams' many battles: the hoys' meetings with Oregon and HnllvwWn Bob. and the girls' forays w ith Mt. Morris and the infamous “Mack Truck MeCiee. Of course, the many teams' efforts could not have seemed so colorful without the loyal support of cheerleaders and pom pon The music department nev ! . always coming through with grefit concerts and performances, notably the musicals, from f uldkt. on theXoof,” to “The Sound of Music, which are justly regarded as the classiest productions in the conference. There were many events and’aem mes we participates in as a class. Our money-making projects, such as an ice cream social, a year of concessions, and our record-breaking fruit and magazine sales, got us a trip to Florida and some sunburns that were truly unforgettable hut the trip was well worth the pain. All the hours spent twisting and stuffing naplms finally paid off after four years, when we at last worked our way up from disqualification to winning first place in the HoijBeeoining Float contest. We were lucky enough to be the first senior class to use the new addition to our school for a full year, and the only class to enjoy four years of informal study halls. Also enjoyed were two class plays, and numerous proms. Many notable people have touched our lives in the past four years, outstanding among them, the late Rusty and Donna I.gan. to whose memory the 1980 Cardinal yearbook is defeated. There are many people that we the editors would like to thank for helping us make this book a success. We could not have gotten it off the ground without the guidance of our dedicated advisor. Mrs Cirande. or the aide of Mr. Hein and the photo club. A big thanks also to our hard working staff, who only complained a little when we made them stay hours after school to meet a deadline, or even when we asked them to do a page or two over! Thank you all We hope you the readers enjoy this book through the years as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. As the years.go by. and you look back atfthis yearbook, we hope that the wonderful yesterdays it recalls, are only a shadow when compared to your tomorrows. Above, Deanne and Scott make the most of their talents. This year, we decided to add something new to the senior section of our yearbook, and here are the results. The senior members of the yearbook staff got together and nominated 3 male and 3 female classmates to each of five positions of honor, each student being nominated only once. Then the senior class put the matter to a vote. The guy and girl voted most athletic were Scott Stykel and Deanne DeWall. Smartest were Laurie Ackerman and Mike Martens. Curt Longamore and Beth Groene- wold were voted the best looking. Pam Kurschner and Tim Engebretson the most popular, and Kari Rust and Ted Ludwig, the funniest. Thus, the sadness of this parting Can be quickly wiped away, : ; And be replaced by the warm glow of memories Now locked in our minds and guarded by our hearts. My Smile reflects That I depart with the knowledge That you are with me always, My life-long companions. A nd as the eternal flow of Ule rries me down the river vard my destiny, thank the gods For Friends Who keep my raft afloat; For Friends, Who make the trip worthwhile. W Scott Stykel i
