NINETEEN SEVENTY-NINE or The Saga of Forreston High School 1979 Cardinal Forreston Hijtli School Forreston, Illinois Volume XL Nineteen Seventy-Nine Table of Contents To the Reader: This is an introduction to the history of Forreston High School Students in the year 1979. This story has been refer- red to as a saga‘ or a tale of adventures and heroic deeds. Our accomplishments are these heroic deeds and we have certainly experienced many adventures on the way. The characters of this story include each student, the faculty, the staff, and any person connected with the school. The school building, school grounds, and places visited by the students are all a part of the setting. The plot, although not specifically known beforehand, consists of all the events and happenings of the year. This familiar tale has been recorded in pictures and words. One word of caution, however. Do not get upset if this story does not correspond to your idea of the year and its events. It is my opinion, and of course it is different than what others think. I only hope that the ideas expressed will enhance your memories and trigger your ideas as to what the year was. Good luck in everything you undertake throughout your lifetime. Thanks for giv ing me the privilege of directing this yearbook. Best Wishes for a Successful Life Your Yearbook Editor, r rv_ Tom Barthel A most important part of any talc is its charac- ters. Characters react to situations, show emo- tions. and carry the plot along. This pictoral his- tory is full of characters, wild and shy. dull and witty, cute and not-so- cute, and all a very important part of Nine- teen Seventy-Nine. Characters 4 Groups People working together— having fun— enjoying themselves— Forreston High School has many different groups and organizations. Band. Chorus, Pom Pons, Cheerleaders, and sports teams, to name a few. Each organization is unique, and has something different to offer the school. It is these groups working alone or together, that make up the real image of Forreston High School. 6 Pictures Clockwise from lop: Al Ease! Band preparing for yet another great half time show. Students all wet at Hallowreen assembly. Chorus Line' (s) up to Wiz through another Pops Concert. Firing Up’ at the Bonfire for another Homecom- ing game. No Sweat! Just one more super pep assembly. 7 Events Nineteen Seventy-Nine was an eventful year. Occurrences that were exciting and colorful became the most memorable and enjoyable parts of the year. However, these were preceded by hours of preparation; float building nights, practices for theatrical productions, and work to sec that the hig dance was something special . Of course, peaceful days always came along sometime, w ith the hushed footsteps of shoes scuffling down an empty hallway. CWU.sr from lop: Jionfirr. East Deeds of Valor Higher, faster, stronger” reads to aneient motto. Athletes work to improve themselves both in body and spirit. Strong bonds of friendship and amiability form as teams strive to achieve perfection and also to win. Our athletes are a speeial part of the school and their additions to the year Nineteen Seventy-Nine are beyond value. 10 11 The Plot Here at last we have a brief memoir of the year. On August 25th of 1978. we filed into a familiar red- bricked building, as usual.. . . This year, however, a sparkling new addition added to the general interest. Complete with locker rooms and a new study hall, the addition added much-needed space to cramped quar- ters throughout the school . . . 12 A year slowly passed by. With inge- nuity and elbow grease, floats were built. People partici- pated in athletics and other activities. A trio of three beautiful girls namely Harlo's Anpels stole the show with their several appearances. Every- one struggled to bat- tle the snow . . . 13 The Plot (Con.) Endless 'nrarhing for higher goals ehararleri ed the ear. To he ihe Im sI mean! eonstant work al improvement. However, long davs were brokrn by lighter moments sueh as the Christmas Assem Id . . . 14 Al work, such as | crforming a pom-pon muline in the middle of a packed gym, or al play, people gave an exciting performance in the drama of everyday life. Smiles, tears, frowns, and chuck- les all made for very special moments. Laughter, shouts, sighs because of an extra homework assignment, and general pride in our school and each other filled the weeks. We lived through bas- ketball and football games, became involved in tin- fantasies of theatrical productions, shouted for and at our friends, and gener- ally. lived. Then, as suddenly as it Ix-gan. the year was over . . . 5 Conclusion We come to an end of life. Now we set out to achieve our hopes and aspirations. These ma taifl many forms, but all will have a common bond thru our memories and experiences together. Good luck to vou all. The F-S team finished with a 15-3 record and received a plaque for 1st place in the Mid-Northern Conference. Winnebago shares the F-S 1st place conference title with us hut next year we intend to take it alone! The varsity team played in a very highly skilled and competitive conference. Their overall record was 5-14, however, win-lose records do not tell how close the games actually wi-re. The varsity squad is losing 4 very talented seniors; Kim Lewis who played spiker, Denise Hayunga also played spiker, Susanne DeWall a setter and team co-captain and Robin Steinhauser co-captain and member of the All-Conference team by a unanimous deci- sion of the conference coaches. Men Hill with a figure four Romanoski with a tie-up Wrestling '78-'79 Lack of numbers is what hurt the wrestling team this year. With only nine members on the team it was diffi- cult to mount a consistent performance. As a result, the team finished with no dual meet victories and a last place finish in the district tournament. However, there were some excellent individual per- formances. Four wrestlers participated in the Mt. Mor- ris Fresh-Soph tournament. Randy Paul and Kraig Meu- ris each finished in second place. Rick Rucker came away with a fourth place finish. On the varsity level, John Hill turned in the best season ever for a Forreston wrestler. His season record was 15-3-1. He qualified for the sectional tournament at Port Byron by finishing 2nd in the Stillman Valley district. John also set a new school record for the most pins. The team showed a lot of promise for future success. Unfortunately, this promise will not be realized because wrestling has been dropped at Forreston for lack of interest. Even though they experienced a couple of disappointing losses, they bounced hack and completed the season with a very respectable 6-3 record. Some outstanding accomplishments can he credited to this years team. They were responsible for giving F.H.S. its 100th football victory in our 23rd year of football. A new season rushing record of 2134 yards was established, and the goal of a fourth consecutive winning season was reached. Defensively they only allowed opponents 77 points for the entire season. The outstanding characteristics of the 1978 Cardinal team was their ability to work together and the individual contributions each player made to our suc- cessful season. Whenever a need arose, we had a player willing to step forward and fill it. 69 Chad Sigafu! Lyle Wilken Tim Coffman Runnin’ Red Takes Season in Stride! Burk row L to R—Merrill Kancy. Mark Korf. The Forres ton Runnin' Red enjoyed one of their best seasons ever, although they finished second to Winnebago, the state champs, in the conference meet. Tlie only dual meets the team lost were to Sterling and Winnebago. The Frosh- Soph team ended the season with a record of 48 15, while the varsity compiled a 52 28 record even though they ran against several class AA schools. Jeff Funk, our number one runner and the recipient of the Leadership and MVP awards, had an outstanding season by winning eight different meets, setting several course records, and being the first runner from F.H.S. to qualify for the state meet, where he finished 32nd. Coach Bennett has been quoted as saying, Jeff is the most dedicated and hardest working athlete I have worked with.” A few of the team highlights were winning the F.S. and Varsity Forreston Invi- tationals, placing second in the conference, and qualifying for the Woodstock sec- tional. All of the seniors, runners and managers, will be dearly missed on next year’s squad, and I wish them luck in all of their endeavors. One of the many was the first place position in the conference. Both F S and Varsity teams received trophies for the confer- ence titles. The Cardinal’s main theme was the word ’'new:” New” uniforms, new coaches, new confer- ence, and many new fans. Some of the highlights of the season included a very close two point victory over Lanark, knocking off three of the Pccatonica, in double overtime, at the districts. Only having one senior member, Kim Duitsman, the Varsity Team showed its leadership by ending the season with an 11-5 record. The Frosh-Soph team was led by the sophomores to an impressive 13-1 record. Deanne DeWall was named to the all-conference team and Kirn Duitsman was honorable mention. 72 Kim Duitsman pulls down a rel ound as Janese Palmer looks on. The fighting Cardinals posted a 20-6 record, which ranks right up there with the best of all Forreston Basketball teams. The team this year was blessed with outstanding shooters, superb rebounders, pinpoint passers, intelligent thinkers, and dedicated athletes. With that combination, the mighty Cardinals ran to a 12-2 Mid-Northern Conference record—which was good enough for 2nd place. The Forreston round-ballers also displayed excellent team balance and talent in once again winning their own Christmas Tournament. Another result of the season was an excellent 11-1 record on the Cards’ home court. Well-deserved recognition should go to players Jeff Funk, Merrill Kaney, Kerry Manus, and Glenn Schulz for showing great leadership and determination in their two varsity years. The community support was once again outstanding—and it is certainly true that good fans bring out the best’’ in basketball play- ers. It surely did in our community. 75 Mrrrill launches his infamous-two handed bomb. Girls Track 1979 SENIORS: D. Sol tow, D. Kampen, A. Nelson, R. Steinhauser. N. Next year’s team will miss the talent and leadership of 5 seniors. Nancy Hagemann. ran the 440 and last leg of the medley. Dory Kampen, our best hurdler, set a new school record in the 220 yd. hurdles. Avis Nelson high jumped, ran the 100 yd. dash and was a member of the 440 yd. relay medley. Deb Soltow helped out in distance races, 2 mile and 880 yd. run. Robin Steinhauser threw discus and ran on the 440. 880 and medley relay teams. At districts we placed in the middle, 11th out of 24.
