Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1964 volume:

THE 1964 Cardinal Volume XXV Published by the Senior Class of Forreston Community High School CARDINAL Enrollment Statistics for Opening Day of School August 29, 1963 GIRLS BOYS TOTAL Freshmen 26 33 59 Sophomores 30 27 57 Juniors 24 30 54 Seniors 26 28 54 106 118 224 1938-1964 The above span includes 27 years. Except for the two severe war shortage years of 1942 and 1943, a “Cardinal” has been published annually. This ’64 product is the 25th yearbook for the FCHS community. Thus the theme is set for the 1964 Cardinal: compare changes and — we hope — progress since 1938. 1937- 1938 was the first year of existence for our community high school. During the sixty years prior to 1937 the local village school board operated a twelve grade school. In September, 1937, the initial enrollment for FCHS was 94. In 1963 it was 224. There were 19 graduates the first year; there are 50 this year. The chief editor in 1938 was Leonard Abels, who has a law degree now from Drake University and who has been city attorney for Iowa’s capital city, Des Moines, for the past five years. The co-editors of this book are Gwen Anderberg and Stan Bomga rden , who look forward to careers in nursing and the Christian ministry. Each of the eight division pages (7, 15, 33, 41, 47, 55, 61, 77) gives a graphic glimpse of the 1938 school situations. The pages following each division sheet portray broader glimpses of the ’63 -’64 school scene. Dedication The 1938 yearbook was dedicated to Mrs. Amsrud (when she was Miss Beth Hower) with the fol- lowing words: “In recognition of that one who has the longest record of service in our high school, who has unselfishly placed the welfare of her pupils above her own needs, who is ever striving for new means of stimulating her pupils to greater efforts, and who has done more than any one else in recent years to put Forreston on the “Music Map,” we hereby dedicate this first volume of THE CARDINAL to our devoted and tireless band director, Miss Beth Hower.” Beth has worn well. The above words continue to ring true. To many non-Forreston people the word “Forreston” has been synonymous with a colorful marching school band for many years escorted by “Tip,” the chow with a regal bearing; and a choice conee rt band at Trask Bridge Picnic and other similar celebrations. Beth's first formal school band appeared in 1933-34, following five years of foundation work. During the past 30 years approximately 2,000 students have been in her bands. About the same number have also been in her three different vocal groups. Thus, a total of 4,000 student-years have been invested by Forreston High Schoolers in Beth's vocal and instrumental groups. No one can measure the length, breadth and full extent of her influence as it continues to branch out through these lives. Her influence is not limited to the mechanics of music and the wider range of music appreciation, but her sense of justice, integrity and devotion to duty have been equally important. It has been not only what she did, but what she was. Her strength of character has made her a great teacher. She was firm and exacting, yet kind-hearted, generous and patiently helpful. A number of youths have been helped in the Amsrud home. They were taught by precept and example to help themselves, were given some financial aid, got renewed courage and all went forth to do well in the world — these are living testimonies to the character of both Beth and Morrie Amsrud. For these reasons and others that could be enumerated, we, the class of 1964, do enthusiastically dedicate this twenty-fifth volume of THE CARDINAL to our friend and talented music mentor, Mrs. Beth Amsrud. May her retirement days be as fruitful and happy as have been her busy days at FCHS and other area schools. 3 School Song 1. Once again here as schoolmates assembled, We fain would lift our hearts in song, To our high School, our dear Alma Mater, Let gladness the moments prolong. We are proud of our lads and our lasses, Of honors won in days gone by, So here's a cheer for our old High School For our Old High School, Our Dear Old High. CHORUS: Here's to our classes, Here's to our lasses, Here's to the lads they adore, Here's to the seniors so mighty, Juniors so flighty, freshie and sophomore, Let mirth and gladness, banish all sadness, Then as the days go by You'll find us ready and steady Boosting for Forreston High. Cheers GOOD LUCK Good Luck! Hey! L-hey! U-hey! C-K Hey! Lots of luck Is coming your way So take it again and Let's begin Hey! Good Luck! Thirteen full-time and five part-time instructors make up the FCHS teaching team. The forenoon teachers are Mrs. Ziegler and Mrs. Frederick who teach Freshman English and the girls P.E. classes. Mrs. Ellis comes each afternoon for short-hand, economics and general math. The two musicians — Mrs. Amsrud and Mrs. Slick — divide their time between the high school and the elementary school. Miss Miller of Cherokee, Iowa, is the only new member of the group. She teaches German, chemistry and science. She was graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in Nebraska last June. Eight of our teachers have Masters degrees: Amsrud, Brinkmeier, Carpenter, Egan, Ellis, Farley, Frederick and Masterson. Mrs. Lusardi has only her thesis to write to complete her Masters degree. Mrs. Brinkmeier is the capable and efficient office chief. Her most exacting and responsible work is handling the highly organized Board of Education bookkeeping system to render a true account of all district receipts and expenditures. Almost as time-consuming are the student class and organization accounts, — plus the hundreds of questions and phone calls to be answered daily. Mrs. Egan has given capable help with the cafeteria bookkeeping and many routine office tasks. STANDING-Mr. Frederick, Miss Miller, Mrs. Ziegler, Mr. Egan, Mr. Brinkmeier. English I, Chief Substitute for After- noon Classes 11 Auxiliary Staff Mrs. Genandt Stanley Bomgarden, Gwen Anderberg, Inez Brinkmeier, Donna Egan. Shortly after school opened last fall a new department was added on a part time basis: speech correction. A well-qualified lady, Mrs. Helen Genandt, came every Friday morning to work with a total of 16 students. It was felt this work would help all of these students do a little better in other school work as well as getting along better in every day affairs, even after regular school days ended. These students have all appreciated Mrs. Genandt s work. Tuesday is meal ticket day. Mrs. Brinkmeier and Mrs. Egan are here shown selling meal tickets to the two co-editors, Stan Bomgarden and Gwen Anderberg. The scene is not quite normal as a dozen or more often form a queue awaiting their turn to secure the means to a meal at noon. Mrs. Egan has been a capable assistant the past year in handling office work. She has the sole responsibility of handling the 400 students and teachers each noon at the cashier’s desk, then making a daily report, and the monthly report which goes to Oregon and Springfield. Play tickets, report cards, daily attendance records, operating the two copying machines and a lot of typing keep her day full. Mrs. Brinkmeier has more than served a banker’s apprenticeship. She keeps an exact and meticulous record of the more than $1000 per day of federal, state and local money required to operate buses, main- tain the building, secure supplies, employ teachers, custodians, cooks, bus drivers and a multitude of other items. The state auditor seems to relax when he audits her books — seemingly a pleasant task compared to some he encounters in big business concerns. Preparing a 15 to 17 page report for each monthly board meeting and writing checks after each board meeting is the monthly climax of this school banker-bookkeeper. She also takes care of a dozen student accounts plus phone calls, questions and inquiries that stream into the office daily. When she does any job it is well done — neat, exact and orderly. Mrs. Johnson is not only a fine nurse but also has uncommon common sense in dealing with both real and imaginary ailments. Students always feel better physically and mentally after a visit to her office. Good cooks are always happily married. Smart men don’t pass up such kind. That’s about it. Our quartet are really good, happily married and they know their stuff on daily meals, banquets, and track snacks etc. We appreciate these four fine ladies. LaVonne Vogt, Leone Kaney, Helen Smith, Mrs. Johnson, Sharon Bocker. Ruth Snap. Homer Smith, Lawrence Ascher. Even temperatures help maintain even tempers in a building where 250 people work together nine hours per day. Neat surroundings, shining halls, clean blackboards, ample supplies of towels, soap and warm water are often taken for granted. The snows get pushed away and shoveled aside, grass is mowed, shrubs are trimmed, repairs are made, the cafeteria and dressing rooms regain a better-than-new appearance each day after rough usage. You know the answers: it's those twin terriers on the building and grounds patrol — Homer and Lawrence. They are on the job early and late and they get results. Our building looks just as good as new. Strangers do not believe us when we say we have used it eight years. That is a fine endorsement for top custodial service. Seven dedicated bus drivers are pictured below. There are also three capable substitutes - Marvin Muller, Henry Engelbarts and Elgin Cornelius. Heavy responsibility rests upon any driver at the wheel of a school bus loaded with the most highly-prized cargo in the community. His first duty is driving the vehicle, but he must also be alert to any bus disturbances. Crossroads, icy roads, snowdrifts, R.R. Cross- ings and careless drivers in other vehicles are a few of the hazards facing the bus drivers. Forreston is fortunate to have a corps of competent drivers. Jack Freasman, the venerable east side “Mayor 9 has taken to high school like a duck does to water. He doesn't top the class in English, algebra, history, or science, but he keeps plugging away and can hear disturbances at night just as clearly as Russians do with hidden mikes built in a wall. He checks the building at night, parks cars when a crowd comes and then keeps prowlers away when everybody else is engrossed in the auditorium. KNEELING-Robert Hoffman, Lawrence Ascher, Ray Bolen. Ilinois Stanley Bomgarden State Scholarship David Buttel Wi n tiers Larry Nevenhoven We conclude this division on the administration of our school with a group of young men of whom the board of education and faculty are very proud. These three students are the 1964 Illinois State Merit Scholarship winners from our school. Basis for their being chosen was their scoring on the American College Testing (ACT) exams taken at Freeport Community College in November of 1963. The three young men who earned these honors were: Dave Buttel, Stan Bomgarden and Larry Nevenhoven. Dave Buttel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Buttel of rural German Valley; Stan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bomgarden of rural Forreston and Larry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nevenhoven of rural Forreston. The scholarships, this year, go up to $750.00, to be applied yearly depending on the financial need of the student and the cost per year of attending the institution. They must be used in Illinois. Larry is using his scholarship at the University of Illinois. Because Dave and Stan will attend Central College in Iowa, they receive no monetary awards, but rather Certificates of Merit. Our first award winner, Dianne Wiley in 1962, has been attending Illinois College at Jacksonville where she will be a junior this fall. Of the three winners from last year, Sandra Zumdahl is with Dianne at Jacksonville, Grant Groenewold is at the University of Illinois and Dick Leerhoff is at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa. 14 Class of 1938 1. The four lads pictured below are to be highly complimented. They were short on credits for graduation in 1963. They exhibited courage and persistence in attending Freeport summer school to make up their deficits. Gordon Ashton is now in the navy, getting along fine and reports he has definite advantages over some of his buddies who did not complete their high school work. Daryl Moring has been a steady and reliable mechanic at the Cardinal Motor Clinic and plans to attend a Chicago electronics school. Larry Frey has a good job at Burgess Battery in Freeport and also helps on the home farm. John Kitzmiller is Lincoln Town- ship’s right hand man, as well as being the number two man for hi8 father on the farm. Gordon Ashton Larry Frey Senior Class Poem No matter the road that chance reveals, No matter the height of the hill, No matter the depth or great expanse, We're the seniors of iron will. We'll conquer all and look for goals That are worthy of our strife. We've found the road of honest toil - It's one we've sought with pride. To those who helped along the way In memory deep engrained — Teachers, parents, friends and school Hold shares in our glory and fame. And though this year will fade away, The Seniors of Sixty-Four Have gained the key of knowledge That shall open a thousand doors. Vicki Carmichael Class Colors Powder Blue and White Class Flower White Rose Class Motto The world will step aside to let anyone pass who knows where he is going. Class Gift The class of 1964 gave $150.00 toward an addition to our trophy case in the lobby. It is felt this project will better display the trophies our class and other classes have won for FCHS. 23 Senior Class History On September lt 1960, sixty-four eager freshmen entered Forreston Community High School. Even more important was the fact that our sturdy athletes won wide acclaim for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. The entire community is particularly proud of this character factor as well as prizing the victorious records compiled by a fine group of boys. A good group of boys can reach their full potential only when they are well directed and coached. Therein lies the answer to a big share of the success for FCHS athletes. Mr. Brinkmeier and Mr. Egan both have fabulous records in basketball. Mr. Egan stepped into a tough spot in football when Mr. Erickson was granted a year’s leave of absence. Mr. Egan kept up the winning trend to capture a second successive title. He had invaluable assistance from Mr. Brinkmeier and Mr. Carpenter. Mr. Van Ness handled the cross-country and track boys very capably to win titles there. Mr. Brinkmeier’s baseball record, over the entire period, shows an even better percentage than does his basketball record. This spring was no exception with the perfect conference season. The school and the entire community gladly salutes our coaching staff and the boys on the teams. The gremlins got our cross-country photo but they could not stop the rugged runners. This year’s varsity cross-country team seemed to improve as the season progressed. They started slowly but reached a peak when the coach wanted it - at the conference meet. This climax of the season came on October 16, when the annual Rt. 72 meet was held at Forreston. Four teams were entered. Cheek of Byron was the individual winner but after that it was all Forreston. Out of a total of 26 runners, Forreston’s finishers were: Wayne Miller - 2nd, Tom Frisbie - 3rd, Larry Sluiter-4th, Gene Ahrens-5th, Jeff Moring-7th, Harley Ludewig-8th, and Ed Faulkner-19th. In cross- country the low score wins. Forreston’s total was 21, followed by Byron-41, Stillman Valley-79, and Ashton - 102. There were 13 varsity boys out for cross-country: Larry Sluiter , Wayne Miller , Harley Ludewig , Lynn Greenfield, Jim Drake, Gene Ahrens , Ed Faulkner , Ron Finch, Tom Frisbie , Mike Gagliardi , Jeff Moring , Lloyd Paschal, Gary Ross. indicates letter winners. There were also 13 frosh-soph cross-country boys: Stanley Buttel , Steve Fager, Richard Mullen, Tom Vaultonburg , Dennis Vietmeier, Donald DeVries , Gene Hagemann, Greg Kirby , Greg Ludwig , Ronald Meyer, Paul Miller , Jim Van Ness, Dennis Wiley . There were seven letter winners here as indicated. Varsity Football J The FCHS football team won the championship of the Rt. 72 Conference for the second year in a row. Last year, under coach Fred Erickson, the Cards won the title after an opening loss to Mt. Morris. This year, under coach Rusty Egan,-Erickson is presently attending the University of Texas on a teaching grant-the Cards repeated the same course. After losing to Mt. Morris 12-0, Forreston went on to the title and a perfect 7-0 Conference record. The Cardinals had the best defense in the conference. The defense allowed only 13 points in seven conference games for an average of under two points per game. The defensive lineup featured five stalwart linemen which included Jeff Moring, Wayne Miller, Gale Frank, John Brass, Tom Frisbie, Dennis Moring and Dave Buttel. Brad Schoonhoven and Bob Raleigh were the alert corner linebackers, with Lee Coffman the powerful center linebacker. Three nimble men kept watch in the secondary: Randy Schneiderman, Bob Bowers and Brad Schoonhoven. Walt McIntosh and Jim Schneiderman also helped in the secondary. The Cards also had a free scoring offense, registering 211 points in conference play for better than a 30-per-game average. This was also the best in the conference. The usual starting unit on offense presented seven rugged linemen: Randy Schneiderman, Gale Frank and Jeff Moring rotated at the strategic end posts; Lee Coffman and John Brass were two aggressive and powerful tackles; Wayne Miller, Larry Nevenhoven and Dennis Moring capably manned the guard positions; Tom Frisbie and Larry Nevenhoven centered the ball. Larry was excellent on the long passes for punts and place kicks. The versatile backs were Bob Raleigh, Walt McIntosh, Bob Bowers and Jim Schneiderman, with Brad Schoonhoven as the handiest and most reliable utility man in the conference. John Brass occasionally became a fullback to make a power-play through the line. In the scoring department, Bob Raleigh not only did a fine job at quarterbacking, but also led all scorers with an impressive 88 total. Several of his quarterback sneaks resulted in long TD runs, most notable of which was the 85 yard jaunt in the final game at Stillman. He was also adept at kicking and passing for extra points. Four boys were tied in scoring with 24 points each: Bowers, Schoonhoven, Mc- Intosh and Jim Schneiderman. Other scorers were Brass-18, Coffman-6, Moring-2, Frank-1. The team spirit was excellent again this year. Not only was the spirit of co-operation good, but the team was alert. No specific offensive blocking assignments were made by the coaches due to shifting defenses. The boys made their own decisions on the firing line and learned to operate as an effective unit, as the records testify. The Cards played good ball against the state-ranked Sterling team in the regional semifinals but lost 35-29. Sterling went on to win the tourney. Each of the five senior starters made a valuable contribution to the team’s record this season. Gale Frank was the team’s leading scorer with 327 points. For the second consecutive year, Randy Schneiderman, 6-1 forward, led the team in rebounds. Bob Raleigh, the 5-11 guard, was the team’s playmaker and led the team in assists and still scored 316 points. Tops in the field goal percentage department was Lee Coffman with a .541 mark. Coffman also topped the Cards in total free throws with 78. Harley Ludewig, 6-6 center, finished the season very strong and was the team’s leading rebounder during the second half of the season. All in all it is another illustrious chapter in the brilliant Cardinal basketball book. INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS Senior Starters BOB RALEIGH-This nifty ball handler was the play maker of the team. In conference play they had a 13-1 record, losing only to an inspired Byron team by a small margin of 53-52. Their season record was 18-2, losing their second game to a tough Mt. Morris team. However, the boys did very well. They won the Frosh-Soph Conference and the Frosh-Soph Tourney by beating Byron in the last game by a 49-39 margin. The freshmen team shows great potential and promise for next year. 70 Frosh-Soph Basketball STANDING-Mr. Egan, Coach; Allan Gravenstein, Dennis Vietmeier, Richard Byers, Ronald Meyer, Dennis Schneiderman, Donald DeVries, Wayne Harrenstein, David Ludewig, Greg Ludwig, Bill Ross, Jim Van Ness. This year a new feature was added to our football and basketball games. A group of ten girls, outfitted in red and white, performed as a drill team during the half time of the games. These girls, under the capable direction of Miss Miller, practiced routines every Tuesday and Thursday after school. If any of the girls missed more than two practices, unexcused, they would be dropped from the team. Many of the drills were original, being devised by the girls and Miss Miller. There were two substitutes, Donna Ludewig and Faye Krum, who would take the place of one of the girls in case of her absence or sickness. This year, the girls chose Gwen Anderberg as their captain. Each girl and substitute received a pin for her work completed this year. 73 Baseball and Track FRONT ROW-Bob Kaderly, Dennis Wiley, Lewis Lazarus, Manager; Frank Schoenhardt, Lynn Greenfield. The story takes place as Claudia, the older daughter, comes home from college. With her she brings a friend, Craven Bentley, who is a poet and dresses like a beatnick. No one likes him very much, especially Tony, Claudia’s old boy friend. As it turns out, Craven Bentley really wasn’t a poet. He had a beatnick girl friend and between them they robbed Mrs. Cavendish, a wealthy neighbor, of her precious jewels. Mrs. Cavendish, however, is found to be an imposter who arranged to have her jewels stolen to collect insurance. There were many good compliments given on the play. It was said to be one of the best plays ever given at Forreston High School. PLAY CAST Raymond Collins Sylvia Collins . Jean Collins . . Tony Foster . . The actress alone remained unconvinced of the guilt of the accused. Upon her stubborn insistence, the other members reluctantly consent to act out the scenes of the murder. After three days of deliberation, it was discovered that a member of the jury, the angry man, was the actual murderer. In an attempt to get Julie convicted, he had over-acted his part in a scene. On stage was a realistic volcano and a painting of the pounding sea. A long bamboo hut provided a dreamy atmosphere completed with music from Danny and the Diamonds. Wava Miller and Ran- dy Schneiderman were the happy Queen and King. Gwen Anderberg and Wayne Miller, Julie Roskam and Lee Coffman were the at- tendants.
