At 2:l5 p.m. on June 2, I986, some 4700 FORRESTAL officers and men departed Mayport for her first de- ployment in nearly four years. Af- ter more than a year spent in workups and training evolutions. the time had finally come for us to rejoin the deployed Fleet. Emo- tions ran high on that humid June afternoon as we said our last good- byes to our families and friends and began the long walk up the brow, knowing that many months would pass before we would return home. As our great ship glided qui- etly out of the turning basin and the figures on the pier grew ever smaller, rain began to fall steadily.
