Sea Wind was the-first exer- cise held in the area since U.S. and Libyan forces clashed during a U.S. training exercise off the Libyan coast the previous March. Participating in the opera- tion were 7,500 Americans and about an equal num- ber of Egyptian personnel. During the exercise, CVW-6 aircraft performed several joint practice strikes against Egyptian target airfields and port fa- cilities and also conducted mock dogfights with Egyptian Air Force fighters. Additionally, CVW-6 anti-submarine S-3 Viking and SH-3 Sea King aircrews honed their anti-submarine warfare skills in opera- tions against French and Egyptian submarines. The five-day exercise concluded on August 28 with CVW-6 aircraft participating in an air show staged at Wadi el-Natrun, a desert site located 50 miles north- west of Cairo. During the air show, the aircraft dem- onstrated bombing, strafing, and rocketing missions against a variety of ground targets. The Navy announced on August 26 that FORRESTAL's scheduled port visit to Haifa, Israel would be can- celled due to an operational schedule change. We instead headed for Naples, arriving on the morning of August 3l. FORRESTAL was ordered to cut her Naples port visit short in response to a Pan Am hijacking in Pakistan and got underway on 90 minutes notice on September 5. After the incident was resolved the next day, we were ordered to return to Naples, arriving on the morning of September 7. FORRESTAL was underway again on September I0 for four days of flight operations and returned to Naples on the morninglof September I4. FORRESTAL present- ed the second sunset parade of the deployment dur- ing this visit, hosting Admiral Arthur S. Moreau, Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe- fCommander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, and more than 300 Italian distinguished visitors. Also at- tending the parade was Admiral Cesare Pellini, Com- mander, Naval Forces Southern Europe. The event proved to be an historic occasion for FORRESTAL, as it was the first time in more than a decade that a Sixth Fleet Carrier had presented such an event for the city of Naples. FORRESTALldeparted Naples September 24 for the fourth and final time of the l986 deployment. ,Follow- ing three days of flight operations off-fthe southern France and a surf FORRESTAL arifivediin 6 is FORRESTAL was underway from Livorno on October 2, enroute for the eastern Mediterranean and Exercise Dis- play Determination '86. During this exercise, FORRESTAL operated with USS John-F. Kennedy CCV-675. CVW-6 air- craft flew Iow-level, coordinated strikes, and conducted ajr combat maneuvering training over Turkey. We con- cluded our role in Display Determination on October I3 and began the transit to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, arriving on October 20. , . ' j After a nine-day visit in Palma,,FORRESTAL departed on October 29 and conducted a two-day exercise with the Spanish Navy and their aircraft carrier, Dedaldo, as we headed west for the Rock of Gibraltar. We were to makea rapid transit of the Mediterranean and Suez Canal, followed by 90 days in .the Indian Ocean. Fortu- nately, events in the volatile Mediterranean altered our schedule even before we passed The Rock . Our vi- sions of three hot, grueling months of IO steaming disappeared as our new schedule promised us some of the best liberty ports in Southern Europe. Instead of Diego Garcia and Mauritus, we now looked forward to Cannes and Palma in the height of the tourist season. The next six months began to look a little brighter. FORRESTAL entered the Mediteorranean through the Straits of Gibraltar on the afternoon of June I4. 0n'June I7, we dropped anchor in Augusta Bay, Sicily to- turn over with USS ENTERPRISE CCVN-655. FORRESTAL then transited the Straits of Messina on the early morning of June I9 and arrived in Naples, Italy the following day for our first foreign port visit. During the visit, we hosted a USO show featuring nine participants in the Miss U.S.A. contest, including Miss U.S.A. herself, Christy Fichtner. FORRESTAL got underway from Naples on June 24 and joined USS AMERICA CCV-661 for three days of dual carrier operations in the Tyrrhenian Sea. FORRESTAL again transited the Straits of Messina and entered the Ionian Sea on June 28. for the next week, FORRESTAL conducted routine flight operations in the international airspace of the Tripoli Flight Information Region, the international air traffic control sector of Libya. On July 4, FORRESTAL celebrated America's 2I0th birthday with a Steel Beach picnic on our flight deck. Following four more days of flight operations, we ar- rived in Palma de Mallorca for a I0-day port visit on July 9. ' FORRESTAL was underway again on July I9 and con- ducted five days of flight operations in the Tyrrhenian Sea before anchoring in Palmero, Sicily on July 24. FORRESTAL departed Palermo on August Sand con- ducted four days of flight operations, droppinganchor in Cannes, France on August 8. During the transit, Rear Admiral Diego E. Hernandez was relieved by Rear Ad- miral Raymond P. llg as Commander Battle Force Sixth FleetfCommander Carrier Group Six. During the I0day port visit to Cannes, FGRRESTAL hosted more than I5,000 visitors onboard and presented a sunset parade which was attended by 300 French military officials and distinguished visitors.
