As a former associate and friend of James Forrestal. I take great personal satisfaction In the fact that this. the first ofits class of Navy ships bears the name of FORRESTAL. James5V.g Forrestal was ' bomb' in yBeaconigg fNe.wjYorki, on Febriliry -IS. I892. After graduation from high school. he- attended Dartmouth College and Princeton-University. After leaving Princeton in l9I5, Mr. Forrestal fworked forshort periods of time asa financial reporter and tobacco salesman.lDuring l9I6, heentered the banking business in New York City. P g ' g a A I g 7 At the outbreak of World War I, Mr. Forrestal enlisted in the United States Navy. He was later commissioned a Naval Aviator and served both in this country and abroad. He was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant in July. I9I9, and re-enteredlthe banking business. ln June of l940, hegaccepted a post as Administrative Assistant to President Roosevelt, serving as liason man for the President in han- dling the National Defense' Program. ln August of l94O, Mr. Forrestal was appointed to the newly created office of Under Secretary of the Navy. In this position he was in charge ofa procurement and produc- tion program that produced the world's largest- Navy. Mr. Forrestal was appointed Secretary of the Navy in May. l944. He took the oath of office as the country's first Secretary of Defense in September. I947, and resigned in I949.,He entered a hospital in April, I949. and died on May 22. l949. . ' ' A bronze bust of Mr.-Forrestal at the Mall entrance to the Pentagon bears the following inscription. , This memorial to James Forrestal, as a spontaneous tribute to his lasting accomplishments in providing for national security and his selfless devotion to duty, was erected by thousands of his friends and co-workers of allranks and stations. 1 fl Frank Nash' -
