1 FORRESTAL completed this 55 month deployment with a nighttime arrival at Mayport on I6 November and immediately began preparing for the Service Life Extension Program CSLEPJ. The ship shifted home- port to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on I8 January l983 and embarked on the 28 month, 5550 million SLEP. SLEP is a program designed to extend the life of our aircraft carriers another I5 to 20 years. During FORRESTAL'S SLEP the ship was completely emptied and most major equipment was removed for rewor ,or replacement. Large cuts were made in the flight 'd hangar decks to remove catapult, arresting gear and main engines. The process was reversed when the equipment was replaced. FORRESTAL'S suc- cessfuil SLEP period was completed on time when the ship left Philadelphia on 20 May l985. After complet- ing a'four-day .l'1i transit to her homeport of Mayport, Florida, FORRESQJAL immediately began preparation for the workup cycle.
