ln the fall of l956, FORRESTAL was called to bolster forces in the Mediterranean during theSuez crisis. Her commissioning crew responded flawlessly, Setl- ting the standard for future crews to follow. From l958 through'l966, FORRESTAL alternated between the Second Fleet in the Atlantic and Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. T In June, I967, she departed Norfolk for duty in waters off Vietnam. After five days of combat operations, a tragic fire broke out onthe flight deck which claimed FORRESTAL deployed to Mediterranean waters four times between i968 and l973. ln March l973, she sped to Tunisia for rescue operations in the flooded Med- jerda River Valley near Tunis. Her helicopters res- cued hundreds of Tunisians during the three day operation and transported thousands of pounds of foodg water and medical supplies to the stricken re- gion. A I t T The ship logged three more Mediterranean deploy- ments between l973 and l97'5. Excitement spread was announcedithat FORRESTAL would be when it the livesof B4 crewmen.
