chief of staff WILLIAM H. MCLALIGHLINJR. Captain William H. McLaughlin, Jr., was born in Bradford, Massachusetts. He was graduated from Stone- ham High School, Stoneham, Massachusetts, in 1939 and attended Boston College until his entrance into the United States Naval Academy in June 1941. He was graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1944. His first tour of duty was on USS SAN JUAN CCLAA-541. During this period, SAN JUAN participated in five Pacific campaigns and the evacuation of . Allied prisioners of war from camps in Japan. Captain McLaughlin was designated a Naval Aviator in March 1947 and has since served in patrol planes, electronic countermeasures and carrier antisubmarine squadrons. He commanded Antisubmarine Squadron 38 and Carrier Antisubmarine Air Group 59. His main carrier duty has been on board USS BEN- NINGTON and USS PRINCETON. In addition, he commanded the attack cargo ship USS VERMILION CLKA-1071 and the USS TICONDEROGA CCVS-141 from October 1969 to December 1970 before assuming his present duties as Chief of Staff, Commander Carrier Division FOUR in January 1971. On shore duty Captain McLaughlin served as head of Aviation Photographic Training, Naval Air Technical Training Unit, Pensacola, Florida, Assistant Professor of Naval Science, Yale University, Training and Aviation Safety Officer on the Staff of Commander Fleet Air Japan, and head of Officer Placement, Bureau of Naval Personnel. Captain McLaughlin's decorations include the Merito- rious Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with five stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, World War II Oc- cupation and Victory Medals, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Taiwan Straits 119585 and Vietnam Cl962j. Captain McLaughlin holds a Master of Science de- gree in Business Administration from George Washington University. He is also a graduate of the Industrial Col- lege of the Armed Forces and the Command and 'Staff course at the Naval War College. - Captain McLaughlin and his wife, the former Rita Champagne of Stamford, Connecticut, and four child- ren, Suzanne, Sharon, Bill III, and Patrick, live in Norfolk, Virginia.
