commander carrier division four GEORGE C TALLEY JR George Clyde Talley Jr. was born in Eastland Texas on March 26 1922 son of George C and Pearl fAlford1 Talley He graduated from Lawton QOklahoma1 H1gh School and attended the Un1vers1ty of Oklahoma for one year He entered the U S Naval Academy Annapolls Maryland 1n 1940 He graduated wxth dlstmctron wrth the Class of 1944 on June 9 1943 Caccelerated course due to World War II1 and was commrssroned Ensxgn He subsequently advanced 1n rank to Rear Admrral effectlve 1 August 1968 Follow1ng graduatlon from the Naval Academy 1n 1943 he was asslgned to the USS ARKANSAS CBB 331 He was on board that battleshrp dur1ng the 1nvas1ons of Normandy and Southern France In October 1944 he was ordered to fllght tra1n1ng He was des1gnated Naval Av1ator on October 17 1945 In May 1946 he Jorned Torpedo Squadron SEVENTY FIVE fwhxch was later des1gnated Attack Squadron FOUR B1 From June 1948 unt1l September 1950 h served as Test Pllot 1n the Armament Test DIVISION Patuxent R1ver Maryland He then served w1th Frghter Squadron ELEVEN based on the USS KEARSARGE In that assrgnment he completed s1xty combat m1ss1ons 1n the Korean area of host1l1t1es and was awarded the A1r Medal w1th Gold Stars 1n l1eu of the Second and Th1rd A1r Medals for mer1tor1ous achlevement dur1ng the per1od September 17 1952 to February 20 953 From July 1953 to June 1954 he attended the Com mand and Staff Course at the Naval War College New port Rhode Island after whlch he was Asslstant Pro fessor of Naval S01ence at Dartmouth College Hanover New Hampshrre In June 1956 he Jomed the Staff of Commander Carrrer D1v1s1on TWO as A1r Operatlons Offrcer and 1n June 1958 reported for refresher trammg with Attack Squadron FORTY-FOUR. chief of staff WILLIAM H. MCLALIGHLINJR. Captain William H. McLaughlin, Jr., was born in Bradford, Massachusetts. He was graduated from Stone- ham High School, Stoneham, Massachusetts, in 1939 and attended Boston College until his entrance into the United States Naval Academy in June 1941. He was graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1944. His first tour of duty was on USS SAN JUAN CCLAA-541. During this period, SAN JUAN participated in five Pacific campaigns and the evacuation of . Allied prisioners of war from camps in Japan. Captain McLaughlin was designated a Naval Aviator in March 1947 and has since served in patrol planes, electronic countermeasures and carrier antisubmarine squadrons. He commanded Antisubmarine Squadron 38 and Carrier Antisubmarine Air Group 59. His main carrier duty has been on board USS BEN- NINGTON and USS PRINCETON. In addition, he commanded the attack cargo ship USS VERMILION CLKA-1071 and the USS TICONDEROGA CCVS-141 from October 1969 to December 1970 before assuming his present duties as Chief of Staff, Commander Carrier Division FOUR in January 1971. On shore duty Captain McLaughlin served as head of Aviation Photographic Training, Naval Air Technical Training Unit, Pensacola, Florida, Assistant Professor of Naval Science, Yale University, Training and Aviation Safety Officer on the Staff of Commander Fleet Air Japan, and head of Officer Placement, Bureau of Naval Personnel. Captain McLaughlin's decorations include the Merito- rious Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with five stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, World War II Oc- cupation and Victory Medals, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Taiwan Straits 119585 and Vietnam Cl962j. Captain McLaughlin holds a Master of Science de- gree in Business Administration from George Washington University. He is also a graduate of the Industrial Col- lege of the Armed Forces and the Command and 'Staff course at the Naval War College. - Captain McLaughlin and his wife, the former Rita Champagne of Stamford, Connecticut, and four child- ren, Suzanne, Sharon, Bill III, and Patrick, live in Norfolk, Virginia.
