Captain Robert B Baldwin a native of Farco North Dtkota became FORRESTALS thirteenth commanding officer on 18 September I967 His previous assignment w ts as commandin officer of the USS CHIPOLA CAO 635 deployed in the southwest Pacific Captain Baldwm was born 24 April 1923 and entered the Naval Academy in l94l He araduated in June 1944 His first tour of duty was aboard the cruiser BIRM INGHAM during which time he participated in the lwo Jima and Okinawa camp llLl'lS He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat V for his tctions durins. a kamikme attack off Okinawa in May l945 and was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in the same action Captain Baldwin reported to Pensacola Florida and completed fliaht training in I947 His first tour of duty ts a naval aviator was with Attack Squadron FORTY FOUR Later he was assigned to the lirst operational Navy heavy attack squadron Composite Squ tdron FIVE Following completion of the Test Pilot School at Patuxent River Maryland in 1952 he served as a test pilot in the Tactical Test Division and as an instructor at the Test Pilot School After a tour with Composite Squadron THREE at Moffett Field California he became execu tive officer and commanding officer of Fiahter Squadron ONE HUNDRED FIFTY FOUR the first squadron in the Pacific Fleet to deploy flying the F8 Crusader He then reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel Wash ington D C for a tour of duty followed by command of Fighter Squadron FIFTY ONE flying the Crusader and deployed aboard carriers TICONDEROGA and CON STELLATION Captain Baldwin then assumed command of Carrier Air Wing SIXTEEN which deployed abotrd ORISKANY the latter part of 1963 and I964 He served another tour of duty in Washington D C as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Personnel before commanding the CHIPOLA 1 . . l Captain Nance was born in Monroe, North Carolina and attended North ,Carolina State College in Raleigh., He is a graduate ofthe U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with the Class of l945.l He subsequently advanced in rank, atf taining that of Captain,to date from l July l965. After serving his first tour of duty on the battleship USS NORTH CAROLINA, he underwent flight training and was desig- nated Naval Aviator on tl'7: December lj946.
