Once the dust had settled and all had been discuss- ed, the Homecoming Dance was finally held on October 9, 1982, at 8:00 p.m. The new high school gymnasium combined with the theme of “Time After Time” to create an electric atmosphere and a feeling of togetherness. The music was provided by the band “Jaxe”. The climax of the evening came at 10:00 p.m. with the coronation of Brian Bounds and Tracy Muir as King and Queen of Homecoming 1982. Each class sang Christmas songs and perform- ed recitations for the audience. The teachers of these grades took their own personal time to find the appropriate recitations, and Mrs. Perry selected the songs. Many thanks to these teachers for their continued support and dedication. The Strawn Christmas Program was an “ex- tra special” presentation this year. It actually featured E.T.; and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students of Strawn School taught E.T. the real and true meaning of Christmas. The evening was spent in showing E.T. many of the tradi- tional aspects of Christmas, such as trees, lights, cookies, presents, snowmen, and Santa; but they were also able to show E.T. the love and spirit of Christmas that comes to all through the Christ Child. It was an enlightening experience for everyone! Jonathan Etter was the “little guy inside the E.T. costume. He was substituted at one time during the program by Tracy Steffen. Mrs. Perry extends a warm thank-you to all of the teachers and students of Strawn Grade School for their hard work and dedication in producing an excellent program! The Jr. High and High School Christmas Concert was a night of “showing off some newly discovered talents! The jr. high chorus was 45 members strong, and they proved to be a highlight and inspiration to the audience. They were followed by a high school girls sextet who sang, “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”. These girls added a “special touch that helped everyone become filled with the Christmas spirit! The high school chorus was 52 members strong, and they performed various selections of Christmas music. The Swing Choir per- formed one selection for the evening and was followed by the jr. high band. After several Christmas selections, the band was joined at the end of the program by the combined jr. high and high school chorus. It was an exciting finish to the program because the selected piece was “Angels We Have Heard On High”. The band and combined choruses produced a very ex- huberant and spirited sound! The concert was under the direc- tion of vocal music instructor, Kandis Perry, and instrumental music instructor, Michael Stalker. 16 17 My Tutor Richard Gordon—Science; Pat Piwowarski—Title I; Peg Ber- tram-Second grade; Kandis Perry—Unit Vocal Music. At the state convention, Nathan Teubel was selected as one of the top ten reporters and the Alumni received 2nd place and advanced to national competition. At the national con- vention Richard Sanders (Illinois State Alum- ni President) accepted the award for the Alumni affiliate as a Gold Emblem Chapter. The FFA again sold fruit, sausage, slaves, and Vitality garden seeds. They also had a fun-filled FFA Week with a farmers breakfast and other activities. In addition to par- ticipating in most section contests, the FFA and Alumni went to Wolcott, Indiana, to at- tend the Farm Progress Show. The two organizations co-sponsored their 3rd annual Agri-Show, one of the most successful events of the year. The FFA expresses its appreciation to Mr. Bork and the excellent Alumni for their help and guidance throughout the year in prepar- ing students for professions in engineering and agriculture. 36 Front Row: Brian Bounds. The National Honor Society was only seven members strong this year, but still attempted to demonstrate the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character, and service to the school and community demanded by the organization. During the Christmas season the NHS sponsored a canned food drive for the less fortunate families and, hopefully, made Christmas more joyful for them. In the spring the Society had concessions at the Title IX track meet and held their annual banquet on April 26. Twelve new members were inducted, and the senior members were presented with the traditional yellow rose of appreciation. Mr. Yoric Knapp was guest speaker at the banquet. 45 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEW MEMBERS Row 1: Marisa Schrof, Lori Wycoff, Darcy Crane, Jackie Booth, Kay Steidinger. They learn how to operate the movie projectors and other AV equipment and can then assist teachers and students in the use of these machines. Part of their work involves checking books, magazines, etc. in and out of the Media Center and replacing them in their proper places on the shelves. They assist in making the Media Center an attractive and pleasant place in which to read and study. AV CLUB Row 1: Ken Zapp. Jeff Hodgson, Trudy Hembree. Deanna Kemnetz. Row 2: Jim Kirkpatrick, Dan Small. Rick Brown, Beverly Blissard, Mrs. Mulligan (Advisor). The student secretarial staff this year was made up of only two girls—I guess you could say we went along with the policy of staff reduction. This year Hope and Kay had duties in the high school of- fice and the commons area. They helped with preparing the meals, taking lunch money, answering phones, duplicating materials, and running countless errands. The staff was small but mighty! Jackie Booth. Row 2: Jeff Kaisner, Doug Travis, Mike Bennington, Mark Aupperle, Phil Keeley, Steve Sikora. The Swing Choir had their share of problems this year. They soon found it was difficult to please twelve people when selecting new out- fits. So they compromised on outfits for the Christmas Concert. In the middle of the year Miss Foley replaced Mrs. Perry as director, and Miss Foley immediately used her choreography talents to challenge the group to learn new, more difficult dances. Then just before the Choir was to perform at the Spring Concert the new outfits finally arrived. The group also per- formed for the Mother-Daughter Banquet at the Catholic Church. Special thanks go to Mrs. Perry and Miss Foley for all their hard work and dedication to the Swing Choir. 49 Author! Author! The Tupek Staff began the year by sending two editors to the ISU workshop in September. After much discussion, the staff felt they needed more experience and numbers. So they increased the editorial staff from 8 to 12 and included freshman and sophomore floaters to broaden the input and experience. Despite a rocky start with camera problems and little training, the staff managed to meet deadlines. They hope you enjoy the fruit of their efforts. The Eskimos came within an eyelash of winning the Sangamon Valley, but lost a close battle to conference champion Octavia, 25-22. The Eskimos gathered in several Sangamon Valley All-Conference honors as Rick Yoder was elected to the team as a running back and as a linebacker, while Troy Wenger was a unanimous selection as a wide receiver.Several Eskimos received special mention honors with Wenger named at defensive back, Brian Bounds at defensive end, Steve Folwell at running back, and Scott Gulliford at quarterback. They later avenged their only loss in the tourna- ment by beating Tournament Champion Saunemin 85-73. The win over Saunemin was also the Eskimos’ first in the new gym. The Eskimos took part in the Shiloh Holiday Tournament and advanced to the Consolation Championship, but were beaten by Marshall 66-64. This year marked FSW’s first year in the Sangamon Valley Conf. The Eskimos made a good showing, but lost some close road games and posted a 4-4 conference record. They held the only league victory over the Champion Octavia Rockets 62-60. Even though the team felt they could have easily posted a few more wins in the season, the 12- 14 record was the best record since the 76-77 season. With the talented underclassmen, including 5 lettermen, the FSW fortunes are looking even better for next year. 60 Inside Moves BOY J.V. The Varsity squad continued to have a busy and successful season. The Greatest For Your Eyes Only The Egg and I 72 The Long, Hot Summer As usual, the summer of ’82 went fast, while a variety of ac- tivities took place. First, the varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads attended the annual ISU cheerleading camp. Then, after a break in July and August, it was time for another tough week of band camp and the dreadful double ses- sions for the football players. In Livingston County August also means Fairbury Fair Week just before the onset of school. The 1982 Fairbury Fair was especially memorable for two FSW jr. high students—Andrea Fugate and Scott Small. The two joined with Kelly Christenson (then from Fairbury) and entered the Talent Show at the Fair for the second year in a row as the Sun- shine Three. In ’81 they had placed 3rd in the contest; in '82 they won 1st place in the Junior Division. The gospel rock group then advanced to meet some very stiff competition at the state level in Springfield in January, where they did not place. And the Winner Is... At an assembly in the fall, Dr. Fulton presented the highest award given by the American Heart Association to Doug Travis, while his CPR instructor, Mrs. Haab, looks on. CPR is taught as a regular part of the health program at FSW, and Doug found that training very valuable while at work one day at Weber's IGA in Fairbury. Doug assisted Sally Tipton (a respiratory therapist at Fairbury Hospital) in administering CPR to Fairbury resident Bud Wink until Mr. Wink could be transported to the hospital for treatment. §cljolastic Awards Athletic Awards Valedictorian—Trish Gerber Salutatorian—Lyle Steidinger Illinois State Scholars— Eric Fugate Geoff Schrof Lyle Steidinger Rick Yoder DAR—Trish Gerber SAR—Geoff Schrof §peectj (Club Tracy Muir and Brendon Schrof attended the State Speech Finals at Downers Grove, where they finished fifth. Director William Ducett warned musical buffs they would not recognize the score because the numbers were unique to Lit- tle Mary Sunshine . However, there was no mistaking the story line. Written as a take-off on the classic love story and musical, it contained all the same elements as those classics—a beautiful, sweet heroine; a handsome, righteous hero; a host of good guys and bad guys; plenty of music, singing, and dancing; and trials and tribulations for the heroine and hero. All those elements were ex- aggerated in Little Mary Sunshine to poke fun at musicals. Despite knowing this at the beginning, the audiences at the May 14 and 15 performances at FSW soon found themselves lost in the music and story, just as they would with any other musical. 77 Prom Night 78 Little Darlings Any Which Way You Can Let the Good Times Roll The Misfits Blues Brothers It’s Love I’m After My Fair Lady Mr. Wong in Chinatown Bonnie and Clyde I Sell Anything 80 PERHAPS earn. pprbapa Xoup tB Xikp a rpating placp A Bljpltfr from tfje Bform 3t pxiata to giup you comfort 3t tB tljcrp to kppp you uiarm And in tljonp timpa of troublp nHjPn you arp moat alonp aljp mpmory of Ioup mill bring you bnmp Pprbapa Xoup ia Xikp a window Pprbapa an appn door 3t inuitpa you to camp eXaapr 3t wanta to aljow you morp And PUPn if you Xobp yourapif And don't know wbat to do SIjp mpmory of Xoup wiXX bpp you tljrougb Ob, Xoup to aomp ia Xikp a eXoud So aomp aa atrong aa atppX Jar aomp a way of Xiuing Jar aomp a way to fppl And aomp aay Xoup ia bnXding on And aomp aay latting go And aomp aay Xoup ia puarytljing And aomp aay they don't know pprljapa Xoup ia Xikp tbP oepan JuIX of confXict, fuXI of cljangp £ikp a firp wb?n it'a coXd outaidp Or tbundpr wfypn it raina 3f 3 abnuXd Xiup forpupr And aXX my drpama comp trup ffly mpmoripa of Xoup wiXX bp uf you. Perhaps Love Commencement presentation by Ron Jankun May 27, 1983 81 Almost Angels For more years than most people in this area can remember, the For- rest United Methodist Women have hosted a unique tradition for the senior class. Each spring the women invite the seniors and their parents to enjoy a tasty breakfast of homemade rolls, coffee, and juice and, hopefully, be inspired by a guest speaker. On May 11 this year’s senior class was privileged to hear alumnus John Plattner present his challenge, What Now?” The senior class takes this opportunity to thank the Methodist Women for carrying on this very special tradition; it is something each year’s seniors look forward to attending. The Senior Trip for the Class of 83 was spent at Marriotts Great America. The seniors left early in the morning May 25 and spent the entire day at Marriotts, riding all the rides, seeing shows, and eating. They then returned to the Sheraton Motel in Waukegan where they swam, played arcade games, and watched TV. The next day the class ate a breakfast buf- fet provided by the Sheraton. On the way home they stopped at the Joliet Mall and shopped. Everyone that went can say it was a trip to remember. 82 —A— — D— SANDY ANLIKER — B— ED BECK—Musical MABYN BECK—In Oklahoma: FHA, FFA, Chorus, Drill Team, Musical. In Forrest: Chorus, Musical. Carter Owner 402 Locust Street Chatsworth, Illinois 131 132 Our Advertisers in Forrest and tlie Surrounding Area A very hearty thank you for helping to make this the 1983 TUPEK possible! Sweet Smell of Success Another year has come and gone. As I look back over the year there have been many hard times, and also many happy and challenging times. I hope that the editorial staff has put together a book that will help you remember this year forever. The editorial staff deserves a big thanks. Thanks—Geoff Schrof, Darcy Crane, Tina Bauman, Brendon Schrof, Doug Roth, Lori Wycoff, Beth Bork, and Amy Waibel—for all the time and effort you have put into this book. Special thanks to Martha Mabrey and Nathan Teubel for your artistic talents on the cover and table of contents page. Also I would like to express my thanks to Mrs. Small and Mrs. Hubly for staying all the late hours and coming in during the summer to get the book done. Also to Miss Kellerman for her help with the Jr. High. Despite all the problems with the camera and everything that has happened this year, the staff feels they have put together a book that is just as good as years in the past. I hope as you look through its pages, you remember all the fun times here at F-S-W. Sincerely, Pam Somers Since this is my last year as yearbook advisor, I take this opportunity to salute the four staffs it has been my pleasure to work with since my return to FSW in 1979. The first two staffs spent most of their time train- ing me, and I was extremely fortunate in having some very talented and bright people to work with—not to mention patient people. (I’m sure I did not make a very good student at times.) My staff the third year came along just in time to see me make a lot of mistakes after my training period—much like a new parent does once she is turned loose with her new charge for the first time. That was a tough year for all of us, and I hope they will forgive my mistakes and short temper and chalk it up to being a “nervous parent.” This year’s staff holds a special place in my heart. They were probably the least experienced and the smallest staff at the beginning with three seniors—Pam Somers, Darcy Crane, and Geoff Schrof. With the help of eight raw recruits, they took on the challenge of trying to put out an even better book; I think you will like what they’ve done. I’m sure Darcy will never forget the plane rides with Sylvester Fosdick to get the aerial shots for the book. Geoff Schrof will long remember his “harem” before the other fellows joined the staff. And nothing can match the sheer terror Pam Somers felt when she became editor. To ALL my special twelve—much love and thanks for a job well done! There is another staff I must also thank—Ron Jankuns for his endless talents, Bill Mullins of Newsfoto for his constant patience and help, Ruth Hubly for so many things too numerous to mention, and Nancy Keller- man for the thankless tasks she performed. Then last, but not least, thanks to everyone in the communities of Forrest, Strawn, and Wing for constantly lending your support to my staffs and me. Without you, there would be no Tupek. 133 Patricia Small, Advisor Index of High School Students Anliker, Sandy 8 Aupperle, Linda 32, 40, 48, 56. 64 Aupperle.
