Forrest-Strawn-Wing Community Umt Schools Forrest, Illinois Volume Foreword... When school starts in the fall, many new problems arise for both teacher and student. Not least of these was the fact that during the school year 54-55, F.S.W. High School was faced with the problem of what to do with a little vagrant Eskimo named Tuktu, who had become lost on his first solo flight in a kayak, and wound up in the creek west of Forrest. He had evidently heard that Forrest was the home of the Eskimos, and thought he had reached his fatherland at last. Traipsing down Main street carrying his collapsible tupek, he finally stopped on the school house playground, and set up house. Not wanting to discourage poor Tuktu by telling him that he had lost his-directions, Mr. Tomlinson and the school board went into consultation and decided that they wouldn’t chase him out, but instead allow him to go to school at F.S.W. and let him learn about geography that way. A year at school seemed to help little Tuktu (although it would not seem so outwardly), for no sooner had school ended, than he folded up his tupek and paddled off in his kayak heading due north. Wether he ever reached Momma and Poppa again we do not know, but his visit was such an exceptional experience we thought you would like to share it with us. —2— Tfie return of the lunch-room Time out from tension The setting......... ........................ 1 Underclasses.......... Tomlinson, who for the lost ten years has proved his loyalty to and companionship with the FSW Eskimos. “Prof” Tomlinson, the leader of the Eskimos, has always been busy, but not too busy to help out one of his little Eskimos by giving him courage to face his problems or a good lecture to set him on the right path. By careful planning and unending hard work, he helped to mold four small schools into one unit with the advantages usually found only in larger schools. In many other ways, Mr. Tomlinson has proved to be a true Eskimo Chieftain, and the staff of the 1955 Tupek is happy to dedicate this yearbook to him. —9— Administration... Board of Education The FSW School Boord has met bi-monthly throughout the year in an effort to solve the unit’s housing problems. In order to obtain the view point of the school patrons, they appointed a school advisory committee to help them solve these problems. Although no solution was found by the end of the school year, the Board planned to continue their work into the summer. At the spring election, Frank Ringler, Joe Broquard, and Harry Roth were elected to fill the positions of Roger Lindenbaum, Fred Aellig, and Al Somers, who resigned. With these changes, Ernest Brauman was the only one of the original Unit Board left. Keith Amstutz, President. Eskimo Chieftains Unit Principals At the beginning of the school year the unit principals meet to formulate plans for the four schools under their jurisdiction. Mr. Cyril Allen is the Forrest Grade School principal and also has charge of the boy's physical education program in all three grade schools. Mrs. Lila Ferguson is principal of the grade school at Wing and also teaches the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Miss Gullberg has charge of the Strawn Grade School, where she teaches grades 4 and 5. Miss Marlar is the assistant superintendent of the unit and acts as supervisor of Strawn Grade School. Mr. Tomlinson, high school principal and superintendent of the unit, has served in that capacity since the formation of the unit. He was also principal of Forrest for four years preceding the formation of the unit. He has the task of co-ordinating all the many activities of the school. A. H. The boys learned many practical and useful things in the F.F.A. shop, among them welding, building feeders, overhauling motors, and fixing other machinery. They also extended their activities to out-of-class projects. They sold garden seeds, sponsored a donkey basketball game, and ran a concession stand at George Bach’s dairy sole. The boys all knew that F.F.A. had been worthwhile when their Dairy Judging Team won Third Place (com- peting against twenty-four schools), and Merle Yoder won Third Place for being an outstanding dairy judge in McLean and Livingston counties. These honors, bestowed near the end of the school year, crowned a full season of untiring efforts by the chapter under the able leadership of Mr. Gallivan. The F.S.W. chapter of F.H.A. again proved itself truly civic minded by taking advantage of every oppor- tunity to show its benevolent spirit in the community. At Christmas time members went caroling, distributed cookies to families, and sent a CARE package overseas. When graduation approached, the F.H.A. girls enter- tained the senior girls with a tea. Near the end of school, a Style Show was presented in front of the P.T.A. to display the progress the girls had made in sewing. All these projects were under the direction of Miss Joyce Wuehle, advisor, and her corps of officers: Gloria Crump, Carolyn Shelby, Helen Kaisner, Jeanette Lindenbaum, Roberta Kemnetz, Martha Moore, Sharon Kinate, Barbara King, and Dixie Williams. The Junior-Senior prom and banquet was the biggest closing activity for the seniors. With much planning and work, this was a bigevent for the juniors also. The seniors, faculty, and board members and their wives were the guests of the juniors at the banquet cooked and served by the junior mothers and sophomore girls.
