Students Sought Health Aid in Special Services itil!! RUBY 3 Judy Thomas made the proper adjustments on the scale. I Students desiring special help in overcoming speech impediments consulted Miss Wally Moist counseled troubled students. Beverly Evko. Students with various health and social problems benefited from the special services of Forest View's nurse, speech therapist, and psychologist. Mrs. Judy Thomas, the school nurse, en- forced a strict policy regarding the treatment of students' illnesses. She kept medical files on each student and administered first aid when necessary. A veteran nurse of twelve years, Mrs. Thomas experienced her first year as a school nurse. Using a program similar to Independent Study, Miss Beverly Evko, the speech therapist, helped students who had problems in fluency, phonetics, and articulation. By isolating a sin- gle letter and using it in words, Miss Evko helped to eliminate undesirable speech handi- caps. Later, she included the letter in an en- tire sentence until the student became accustomed to its sound and used it in his daily speech. Mr. Allen Askew, Forest View's psycholo- gist, counseled any student who, because of family or social problems, encountered dif- ficulties in school. These three people provided valuable as- sistance for those students who sought help in correcting bothersome problems. 'tif Special Services 43

Counselors Assisted Students need. 'S Hr-r I eq., f 1 f aware of a student's progress, Mr. Charles Widlowski gave advice accord- With Future Plans Members of each class consulted their counselors, who provided information on courses, assessed vocational interests, and gave advice on personal problems. Incoming fresh- men took placement tests provided by the Gui- dance Department. The counselors scheduled the college entrance examinations, administered various aptitude and achievement tests to stu- dents in the first two years of high school, and distributed vocational interest questionnaires designed to aid students in vocational choices. Because of the demand for information on various colleges, entrance requirements, and available scholarships, the Guidance Depart- ment supplied students with hundreds of cata- logs and pamphlets and also invited numerous college representatives to speak with interested students. Through visiting career representa- tives, students planning to enter special pro- fessions, such as journalism or radio broadcasting, learned of current employment opportunities. These services often facilitated overcoming difficulties students met while plan- ning a future. Police Officer Walter A. Moist counseled stu- dents and watched for incidents of truancy and vandalism. District 214 hired a police counselor to offer students an adult advisor other than the teachers, counselors, etc. in the school. Mr. Moist proved to be a source of information on laws and other aspects of the police system.
