As part of their physical education program, juniors engaged in a unit of square dancing. Chester Szostek attempted a forward flip. 34 Physical Education Department Physical Education Provided Special Courses for Interest and Ability Levels Because of the twenty-eight hundred stu- dents enrolled, the Physical Education Depart- ment proved to be a busy department through- out the school year. Activities offered in the Boys, Physical Education Department included weight training, speedball, soccer, wrestling, archery, bowling, gymnastics, golf, square dancing, and social dance. In addition, the department added two new units, indoor hockey and bicycling. The latter, presented by Mr. Bill Mohrmann, in- volved races between individuals or teams using motorless mini-bikes. Mr. Darryl Phil- lips headed the weight training unit. The boys in weight training listened to lectures on body development and experienced a number of vigorous workouts. The Girls' Physical Education Department expanded to form two Freshman Special, two Sophomore Cadet, and two Junior Leader classes. Girls in a Freshman Special class had received the recommendation of a junior high school teacher on the basis of interest an ability. Using similar guidelines, teache chose girls for inclusion in a Sophomore Cade Class. Junior Leaders experienced a progra somewhat different from all other PE classe- in that they learned to officiate and coach well as to participate in each unit. Regul girls' PE classes participated in sports su as tennis, field hockey, track, basketball, gy nastics, modern dance, social dance, volle ball, golf, and square dancing. During the bo ing unit, Mrs. Joyce Therkildsen and Miss Dor Rose excused the senior girls from class three days a week, provided the girls bowl one game a week on their own. For studen who had completed Dance II, the curriculu included a Dance III class. Throughout the four years that a stude experienced physical education, the partment emphasized the importance of da' exercises and vigorous activities to p mote good physical health.
