English Department Introduced New Courses 7 'W ' ' 'fi 'T i H if In ,. f M. l ,, V ty .. 4 ,I f ' iv 1 N In film-making class, Tom Lisinski and Kirk Higgins adjusted a Super 8mm camera on its tripod. Sheryl Engleson and Paula Melone presented an original drama for Acting I students. Variety and change were words synonymous for the 1970-71 English Department. This year. freshmen and sophomores continued to take standard English courses, while upper classmen chose subjects from among forty new one and two-semester electives. All of the courses belonged to one of three categories: speech, composition, or reading. To facilitate the learning process, English teachers introduced greater use of audio-visual materials. In particular, the speech, debate. and forensics classes used video tape both to improve speech and develop good speaking habits. Mr. Leo Hundt, English Department Chair- man, felt that the revision of the curriculum had proven to be successful and the program more valuable to the student. He indicated future plans for increased use of videotape equipment, making possible course offerings in the areas of mass-media. television, radio. and film study. 26 English Department

Co-ordinators Obtained New Ideas at Conventions . l 'x .x Under the CWA program, Lugene Eberly worked in the cafeteria. An employee at McDonald's, Steve Langbehn earned money and received credits applicable toward graduation. ldlhqq f In Organization of the work programs oc- curred collectively under a subdivision of the Business Education Department, and various faculty members served as vocational co- ordinators for each program. Designed to offer vocational opportunities to students not intend- ing to enroll in college, each program provided actual work experience and also a correspond- ing class in which students discussed various aspects of their jobs. To become familiar with new procedures in the supervision of all of the work programs, many of the co-ordinators attended the Illinois Vocational Association Convention. Other co- ordinators participated in conventions relating exclusively to their particular program. Some of the students accompanied faculty members to an all-state convention in Springfield, Illi- nois. There, they saw examples of the work in- volved in salesmanship, advertising, and public speaking. Although most of the student's knowl- edge of his vocational choice resulted from ex- periences gained on the job, he also benefited from guest speakers who described their work and explained the qualifications necessary to succeed in a given occupation.
