The Office Practices class acquired a new electronic calculator, while the typing classes replaced fourteen typewriters and received new textbooks. Ac- counting, General Business, and Shorthand were just a few of the Independent Study programs that supplemented the already adequate curriculum. As a variation of the daily class routine, business education teachers arranged a number of field trips and invited guest speakers to visit different classes. Students traveled to the Merchandise Mart, the County Court House, and the Museum of Science and Industry. The Reverend Hiram Melson from Operation Bread- basket talked to the Consumer Problems class, while a representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation visited Mr. Glenn Matters CWT class. Learning outside of the classroom con- tinued with participation in the Teachers Aide Program at local elementary schools. Many business students prepared for actual future employment in the world of business, and all participants gained valuable experience ann cable to the practical living aspects of the world. ,-Q 'ffl' M . if f-'.. Co-ordinators Obtained New Ideas at Conventions . l 'x .x Under the CWA program, Lugene Eberly worked in the cafeteria. An employee at McDonald's, Steve Langbehn earned money and received credits applicable toward graduation. ldlhqq f In Organization of the work programs oc- curred collectively under a subdivision of the Business Education Department, and various faculty members served as vocational co- ordinators for each program. Designed to offer vocational opportunities to students not intend- ing to enroll in college, each program provided actual work experience and also a correspond- ing class in which students discussed various aspects of their jobs. To become familiar with new procedures in the supervision of all of the work programs, many of the co-ordinators attended the Illinois Vocational Association Convention. Other co- ordinators participated in conventions relating exclusively to their particular program. Some of the students accompanied faculty members to an all-state convention in Springfield, Illi- nois. There, they saw examples of the work in- volved in salesmanship, advertising, and public speaking. Although most of the student's knowl- edge of his vocational choice resulted from ex- periences gained on the job, he also benefited from guest speakers who described their work and explained the qualifications necessary to succeed in a given occupation.
