FTA, FNA Learned Through Service' 7 Faculty and Students Formed Riding Club Members of the Future Teachers of Amer- ica Club met to further their interests in the field of education. Exploring the teaching pro- fession involved the FTA in numerous activi- ties throughout the school year. During American Education Week, the club not only bought apples and designed name tags for all of the faculty members but also held a tea for them. The need for special education confronted FTA students who visited the chil- dren at Spaulding School for the Handicapped in Chicago. Besides the traditional Fall Festival Balloon Blast and the spring Daffydil Sale, the FTA increased its funds with a bake sale and a coke dance. Members became acquainted with young children at a Christmas party held for the teachers' families. In April, the club organized a student-teacher switch day and hosted the 1970 FTA State Convention. Throughout the year, FTA students gained practical experience as aides to both elementary and high school teachers. A very active year ended with the May election of new officers. This year the FTA continued to operate on a point system. Members accumulated points LIBRARY AIDES: Bottom Row: Judy Smorynski, Joan Cleveland, Kathy Barbey, Helen Boyles, Karla Krewer, Orna Aminadav, Peggy McAndrew. In recognition of their contributions, they received pins, year guards, charms, and certificates. Through social activities and field trips to local hospitals, the Future Nurses of America Club acquainted interested students with the nursing profession. A relatively small organi- zation, the FNA baked Christmas cookies for the patients at Americana Nursing Home in Arling- ton Heights. Members who volunteered their services at the nursing home gained experiencer helpful for a future career in medicine. One of the school's newest organizations, the Riding Club encouraged faculty as well as students to join in the fun of horseback riding. Beginning in January, the officers and Mrs. Andrea Mock arranged weekly trips to the Westown Riding Stables in Chicago. There, participants found ample opportunity to im- prove their skill while experienced club mem- bers volunteered their services to instruct novice riders. As a result of student interest, horseback riding proved to be a popular extra-curricular activity. FNA: Bottom Row: Pres. Cindy Lawson, Vice-Pres. Mary Balmes, Sec. Linda Mayerle.
