At any time of the day, Forest Lake students could be found active in various aspects of teen-age lifestyles which range from sports activities to clubs and from organizations to employment. No matter which activity a person was involved in, they gained knowledge and made friends that may have lasted even after they have completed their life as a high school student. Besides performing the popular ‘‘Tea for Two” other attractions were forming a train, the 51 Hot Dog and the Forest Lake Doughnuts. Another big attraction was our football team. A bonfire the previous night fired up students with the burning of a paper ram and a twisting snake dance. Turning traditions into fresh outlooks, Student Council changed the time and setting of coronation. Taking place at night, the event reigned with formality as Sue Burke, last year’s queen, crowned new royalty. “We feel the night time setting created a more formal atmosphere,” said junior Ron Trombley. Homecoming was planned out by the Student Council, which provided activities for all. They kicked off the week by painting town windows (and people!) on Saturday. Monday night was Coronation, which was held in the auditorium. To set the mood, people dressed up in their best during the day. Tuesday night was a time for talents to shine at skit night. The winning skit was presented by the “B” squad cheerleaders. “What a pair of legs,” was a comment often heard as students tried to match up teachers with their legs for the leg’s contest. Wednesday was also a day when people could show off their hats, buttons and their favorite tie for hat. tie, and button day. Poodle skirts, ponytails, bobby socks, leather jackets, sunglasses, and slicked back hair were the fashions on Thursday, as 50’s day brought back “Happy Days. Thursday night, the marching band provided the “Street Beat” for the Homecoming Parade which earned them first place. After the parade, the students enjoyed the Snake-Dance and the Bon- Fire. Homecoming Royalty, Dina Kemnitz and Tony Nelson, carried on tradition by starting the Ram Mascot on fire. The week was topped off by Friday night's football game against Ramsey. After the tie score of 15-15, the Rangers pulled ahead with a 23-21 victory over the Rams. The excitement lasted through the night with the traditional Alumni Polka. Over 1,000 people packed into the cafeteria to see old and new faces and to dance the night away to the music of the Polka Jacs. The Student Council planned various activities such as the ice cream eating contest, tropical day. a soccer tournament and the main event of the week, the coronation dance. The music was provided by R R. The crowning of the sophomore prince and princess and the Junior King and Queen was the highlight of the evening. Phy-Ed 41 42 Poem Focusing on FOCUS Focus was described as an alternative education program. Focus is a course where students are treated more as individuals rather than as a class. Because of that factor, the teachers were able to deal with each student personally. Focus students are those who were not able to function in a regular classroom for a variety of reasons, even though the students have an average or above average grades and ability. The purpose of Focus is to help students graduate from high school. Since the students of Focus were given individual guidance and the chance to gain back lost credits, they voluntarily choose to stay in school rather than drop out of school. In Focus, students take basic courses such as math, social studies and English. The classes are held the first four hours of the day. The advisors of Focus for the 1980-81 school year were Sally Irvine Hagman; social studies, Tom Malerich; math, Carol Mollen; English; Loren Lynch; work coordinator and Jackie Kroska; secretary. Spirit! Spirit! That was the main idea behind Student Council which consisted of 25 representatives that voiced the opinions and the ideas of the student body. The Student Council planned various events to involve all students. Some of the activities included Homecoming Week, the blood drive, College. Vocational-Technical and Military Fair, Elf-O-Grams, and Valentines with carnations. This year the Student Council had a change from last year, they gained a new advisor, Mr. McElrath. “The reason I applied was because I’ve worked with IPLE in the past and since that program was not open this year, this was the perfect opportunity to work with a group of dedicated, involved and hardworking students.” This year, Student Council used three words as their guidelines: Communication, Cooperation and Coordination. With these words in mind, the Student Council had a successful and productive year. 136 Student Council 1. Theresa Gustufson takes minutes at a Student Council meeting. 2. Senior Class Council, under the direction of Mr. Moskop, had the responsibility of arranging the voting for cap and gown colors, class motto, class flower and the announcements for graduation. They also sponsored Senior Week, which was held in the spring. Junior Class Council, lead by Mr. Nelson, had the jobs of putting on the Sadie Hawkins dance and the big job of putting on the Prom. Sophomore Class Council, under the direction of Mr. Lewis, sponsored a dance to raise money for the Prom. The staff's responsibility was to report news in a thorough and honest manner. They reserved the right to express themselves publically through editorials. They realized the Breeze was a student publication, so the opinions expressed were not necessarily the views of the Breeze advisor, Mr. Somrock, or the faculty. The Breeze was in the process of changing its general format. Two new additions this year were the letters to the Editor column and the Photo Poll. The staff was trying to keep the Breeze consistent so changes after the fourth edition were minor. The people on the staff put forth the effort to bring to us, the student body, The Forest Breeze. 1. These were just some of the things connected with working on the yearbook. The Forester staff put forth many hours of hard work and time to get the yearbook published. Another factor that contributed to the hard work of putting the Forester together was that the Forester room was moved to the Band department, to the A.V. department and then to the Library. This attributed much confusion and made it that much more difficult to meet deadlines, but the Forester staff did it by staying up many late nights. The yearbook is the one thing that retains the memories of our high school years and the one book we can look back on to capture those memories once again. 140 Forester 1. The members included Scott Bayless, Ted Murphy and Leif Rassmussen. They sang songs by Cheap Trick, The Beatles and many others. The second band to perform, headed by Dan Spitzer, played some of their own tunes. Fallen Angel was the main band featured. The group members were all students going to Forest Lake High School. They were Tom Michaud, Dan Schell, Frank Fischer and Rob (Dink) Yuronich. They played a variety of popular songs. Fallen Angel was the main band to perform. They worked very hard with Mr. Koski and the Forester staff to organize everything for the concert. They also arranged for the other bands to play. This year's band program had a big change, a new band director — Mr. Richard Hahn. Mr. Hahn’s biggest challenge was the Marching Band. After a not too good reputation, he was determined to bring back what the FLHS Marching Band had lost: a band to be proud of. Mr. Hahn brought a new and fresh outlook with him and that helped the band to start off the new fall season with an optimistic and excited attitude. This approach revitalized the members' spirits. Another factor that aided greatly was the variety in Mr. Hahn’s program. Something different for every game. These included the popular “Tea for Two”, the making of the train done to the beat of Work Song”, and the ”51 Hot Dogs”. The main reason behind the improvement and success of the Marching Band was Mr. Hahn’s confidence in the group. This confidence in them kept the group's spirits high and when the compliments kept coming, they were more determined than ever. Mr. Hahn worked very hard with the band. The result: a marching band that made everyone proud of the FLHS Marching Band. 144 Band 1. Concert Band: Front to Back: Kathy Paulsen. Lisa Rogers. Kim Sebeck. Julie Rogers, Sue Ostertag. Students Gaining Work Experience This year a new work program entitled Diversified Occupations is being offered to seniors at Forest Lake High School. Students who are not behind in cedits. have good attendance and have a job. may be excused early from school to go to work if they do not have required classes which require them to remain at school. In addition to actual work experience, the students attend a related class each day called Occupational Relations. Not only do the students get credit for their employment, but the experiences on the job should make them better prepared in the real world. A student must work a minimum of fifteen hours a week and if absent from school can not report to work. If rules in school or work are violated, a student may be dropped from the program which would result in loss of credits. A number of occupational fields are represented in the program such as sales, clerical, secretarial, teacher aide, carpentry and food services. It is hoped that enrollment will be such that in the future the course will be divided into specific areas of office-related jobs, health occupations, distributive education and trades _. and industry positions, i ne students were involved in organizing an employee-employer banquet where the students put on a banquet to show appreciation to their employer for their learning experiences they have enjoyed for the year. 156 Diversified Occupations 1. Our Town Under the direction of Henry Hebert, the cast of twenty-four, put on a most memorable play It was the story about two families, the Webbs and the Gibbs. George Gibbs, played by Larry Crouse, falls in love with Emily Webb, played by Lois Cheesbrough. While giving birth, she dies. After her death. Emily wants to return to see earth one more time. During this time, she realizes how blind live people are. Working in the play was a great experience. The cast and the director made the work enjoyable and exciting. This comment, made by Jan Banta, is one that is shared by all of the cast The one line in the play that had the most impact was a line given by Lois Cheesbrough. We should love every minute we are alive before death takes it away. UR TOWN ADOUS 3 158 Our Town 1. The cast of Our Town ; Front to Back: Mr, Hebert. Jan Banta. Lisa Kuznia. Tammy Avery.
