Even in Forest Lake High School one is in contact with a computer. Daily schedules are produced from the TIES computer, hand calculators are becoming more and more popular and classes in business, electronics and math all touch the computer field. These machines have also invaded the business world. Big corporations utilize computers and even small towns like Forest Lake are experiencing the impact of the computer boom. Grocery stores are beginning to invest in electronic scanners which are not only easier to use, but faster for the customers. Programs encompass not only classes but all extra- curricular and athletic interests. The output is the complete student, each one gaining knowledge which will be applied throughout their future. Of course, information is stored in data files, which include supporting advertisers and the index of the 1980 Forester. 17 JNPUT 4 1. Students unload buses to face another school day. 2. There were a few bugs, but they were worked out and didn’t put a damper on the week’s events. A fun-filled week was planned for the student body. Each day was different such as Hat, Tie and Button day, Maroon and Gold day and Dress-up day. Not only were the days filled with activities, but the nights were pretty spirited too. Homecoming 79 included the bonfire and snake dance (which was a rather heated event) and skit night, which included wild and crazy people on the floor and in the air. There was also the parade downtown Forest Lake with a special appearance by Bob Lurtsema. FLHS alumni and students celebrate homecoming 50 Those who felt the need to get up and dance were satisfied too, a sock hop was also included in our activities. With all of this night life, one could still not forget the very important activities, such as the coronation of the king and queen (Dan Veirling and Sue Burke) and that very exciting homecoming game when Ranger football players won in overtime. What can be said after such a week? Just thanks to all the people who made it a success — our student council and the students themselves. 1. The four member band, Tyrann, played many popular tunes by Boston, Foreigner and most of all, Styx. Their music was good to listen to, but made dancing difficult. The junior class council coordinated the evening including decorations and the traditional marriages and divorces. Newly married couples could also have their wedding portraits taken on the bales of hay. Thanks to the junior class council, this year’s Sadie was a memorable one in many ways. 1. Kurt Nelson, Julie Heck, Jordene Johnson and Rick Schwab enjoy getting their picture taken at Sadie. 2. Paul Helm and Mary Sargeant share a dance 3. Clyde Fulks latches onto Karen Savela. 4. The evening was filled with music and dancing with the student council sponsored valentines dance, featuring the band R R. The group performed a variety of numbers, from polkas to blues and rock. A great way to end any day. 6 7 54 Valentines Day expressed in hearts, flowers and music 8 1. Laura Miller and Karen Kazmierczak of student council, prepare hearts 2. Jennifer Gubash and Cathy Davis wait patiently to purchase a valentine. 6 Hearts being cut out by Karen Kazmierczak 7 Bob Culp is thinking about what to say 8 Rick Waxberg talks with fellow student about writing valentines Valentines Day 55 Politics, pageants and presentations In this year of 1979-1980 the world scene has changed drastically. The mid-east was in a turmoil with fifty of our people caught in the middle of Iranian politics. The Olympics in Moscow and the threat of a U S. boycott. On top of all of this inflation sent gasoline prices well over a dollar a gallon. Long gas lines were a common sight in 79 with customers who hoped for at least ten gallons before the station ran out. What will the remainder of 1980 hold for us? A presidential election this year may change the course of affairs for the future, hopefully for the better. On the local front one of our own Forest Lake Senior High students, Regina Laroche, won the title of Junior Miss, representing Minnesota. 1. Bannering a school board meeting with negotiation issues is Loyal Hyatt. 2. The golden arches of McDonald s gives Forest Lake a new look. 3. Most take a job for extra money to buy things their parents couldn’t or wouldn’t buy for them. Along with the money they are also taking a step ahead of most by gaining experience in the future job market. There are also courses and work release programs within our school which help a person find a job and get school credit for working experience. Most students spend about twenty hours a week at their job. This has had an effect on after school activities. Many students who may want to participate in after school activities cannot because of a job. The working high school student appears to be here to stay. Because of job commitments students must establish priorities of job and school; sometimes a difficult choice to make. 5 1. Working with precision at Hardware Hank is Tom Ruggles. 2. Rachel Schleising rings up your purchase at Hardware Hank. Jobs 59 Dollars disappear as fast as they’re earned Inflation, a major concern during the 1979 school year thanks to the oil crisis, is the pinch felt all over the world and here in Forest Lake. Gasoline has surpassed the dollar per gallon barrier with the cost of clothing, food and entertainment increasing at astounding rates. Guys and gals come to school almost daily with freshly permed hair, from frizzy to curly. Today’s clothes are a flashback to the 40’s rage, spike heels and padded shoulders, slim legged pants and tight slit skirts. Last but not least there are the ever present tennis shoes; Adidas, Pumas, and Nike. There are many ways for students to spend their hard earned cash and the prices appear to be increasing with no bounds in sight. 3 60 Student Finances Student Finances 61 1. Joe Finger shows off his car. 2. The price of gas is no secret, it is over a dollar a gallon. 3. Forest Lake has grown in the last few years. 4. Dave Dunbar School councils aid communication This year’s student council, under the leadership of Rosemarie Morley, has promoted school spirit and the feeling of unity among the student body. Throughout the year the student council has been the sponsors of many spirit filled activities. Some of these activities include the blood drive, college fair, elf-o-grams, Santa pictures, dances, valentines and flowers. They also have a concession stand that is open after school for snacks. The class councils are also a very important part of the representation for the student body. The councils work on fund raising projects for their class. The juniors are in charge of getting the junior-senior prom in order and the senior class council is responsible for senior week. Councils 63 A study of practical skills Office Education Association is an important part of learning about the business world. Students who have an interest in the office skills are placed in jobs to further increase their knowledge of an organized and working office situation. This year’s OEA week included a teacher’s tea and a Mr. Legs contest where male teachers had pictures of their legs and faces on display in the show case. Students were then to match the face to the legs for prizes and vote for the best looking pair of legs. This year’s winner was Mr Rowbotham. There was also a balloon popping contest for prizes and a guess the number of candy hearts in a jar. Future Homemakers of America are a group of students planning for the modern home of tomorrow. What will be required of the future family and homemaker and what challenges and changes are ahead? Vania Moreira from Brazil, Eva Weidenhaijn and Tom Gronberg, both from Sweden, Ursula Nummi from Finland, Vilma Duron Gonzales from Costa Rica, Kozo Kakuyama representing Japan, and Diana Minervine from Columbia. These students have experienced life tn America for the school year and will return to the respective countries with many special memories of our life in Forest Lake. While in our country, most of the exchange students have been able to travel to other states and climates, gaining first hand knowledge of the United States and it’s people 1. FFA 80 FFA: A vocation for the future FFA 81 The FFA is a national organization which is comprised of students of vocational agriculture classes. Our Forest Lake FFA Chapter has roughly 100 members and is one of the top chapters in the state. The elected officers for the 1979-80 school year were: President — Pat Daninger; Vice President — Sharon Thomasen; Secretary — Kellie Dill; Treasurer — Mark Reese; Reporter — Mark Chilson; and Sentinel — Jim Friend. During the summer a leadership camp was held which included these people in setting up a program of activities for the next year. The chapter received the Silver National Chapter Award and Rick Sandager won the American Farmer degree at the National Convention in Kansas City this year. Rick is the third person to receive the degree in the history of our chapter and it is given to one out of a thousand in the nation. The chapter also had six State Farmer degree winners. The FFA is active in every district contest with a number of good teams from Forest Lake. Teams winning their way to state contests this year are: Soils Judging, General Livestock Judging, Parliamentary Procedure, Public Speaking, and Horticulture. Our chapter has won the Dahlberg Award for the past ten years. This is an award given to the most active chapter in our district. National FFA week was a week of special significance to the FFA and was celebrated during the week of February 25-29,1980. At the Chapter Banquet, awards and recognition were given to many worthy members for their outstanding achievements in the FFA. The banquet was held on March 28,1980 with over 200 special guests and friends of the FFA in attendance. 82 Forester Publications strive to preserve memories This years' Forester staff worked very hard to bring the students of FLHS a yearbook to represent the 1979-1980 school year. A giving spirit helped the staff through the late nights and holidays they worked. The yearbook is the only publication most people keep after their high school years to remind them of the good times as well as some of the moments they might like to forget. The Forest Breeze, our high school paper, has had problems with producing the paper. They had staff problems which resulted in not enough staff to produce a good school publication. Students need to get involved in these activities to keep them alive. Forester Staff, Front Row: Rick Verner. Second Row: Debbie Wettschreck, Michelle Grundhofer. This is a very popular play about gamblers, night club dancers and a Mission. It was the traditional boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl kind of romance, but the combinations are the things that seem unlikely. Nathan (Chuck Schultz) Detroit has been engaged for fourteen years to a night club dancer named Adalaide (Kathy lannelli). Sky (Mark Wehner) Masterson is “suckered’’ into a date with a woman from the Mission, Sarah (Deann Wishon) Brown. This date lands the two in Havana, Cuba. The play is full of gangsters and strippers, cops and “flashers’’ and was a very successful play for those at FLHS. 5 7 84 Guys and Dolls 6 1. Guys and Dolls 85 A Solid Success The winter show at Forest Lake Senior High was the comedy The Solid Gold Cadillac. It was a show about an old lady who puts her nose into a big corporation’s business. To shut her up the company gives her a job to keep her busy, but this only aggravates the situation and she gets more involved than ever. The show had some new faces to the drama department, which worked out very well. The show was directed by Mr. Richard Carlson and was a show that delighted people of all ages. 2 1. Under the coaching of advisor Ralph Streater the team recorded another winning season. Lead by the team of Dave Dunbar and Rick Little, the debate squad has brought home many trophies. Tony Bergerson and Ed Dow have also placed well in competition. This activity takes a person who is willing to dedicate a lot of time and energy in digging up evidence for this years’ topic on foreign trade. The dedication of the FLHS debate squad can be admired by all. The 1979-80 Lettermen’s club has a new goal in mind; to become a club that will service the community as well as the school. They arranged the night Birchwood visited the basketball game and also sponsored the annual car wash in the fall. Some aspects of tradition remained with their usual initiation of new members held out of school. 3 Debate 89 In service to students and school Have you ever felt totally lost or confused in a math or science class? If so, there was someone you could come to for help. The math science tutors were volunteer workers whose duty was to aid people having difficulties with their math or science classes. In the same manner, many students donate their time to other students in the skills development center as a one-to-one tutor. All those who serve as tutors at FLHS are willing to give their time to aide others and in return receive the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped their peers. The students that help in our school office and other offices in FLHS are very valuable people. They assist with secretarial work, office records, filing and many other duties which help the secretaries immensely 90 Aides and Tutors 1. AV Aids, Kent Johnson, Brian Reeder, Randy Simonson. 2. Ski club has also provided the enjoyment of skiing with classmates, while not having to worry about the many expenses, such as transportation. Despite poor weather during the beginning of the 1979 tennis season, the team displayed assurance and poise. In each of their matches, each team member strived to play their best with such devotion paying off for Jean Gunderson, who was voted most valuable player, and for the team of Marie Paulson and Mary Brusy, who received honors as the most improved. Practices started with a half hour warm up including a long run. After the exercise period, the team would get to their game with coaches providing instruction and advice for improvement. Early morning practices and a winning desire were strong attributes of this year's team which worked to not only improve the members’ tennis skills, but also their sense of personal accomplishment. 102 Soccer Many kicks are at FLHS ' This was the fifth year for soccer in Forest Lake. For the past four years, efforts have been made to include soccer as an official inter-scholastic sport, however, as yet these efforts have not been successful and soccer remains on an intermural basis at Forest Lake Senior High. Forest Lake’s scrimmage record for the season was no wins and four losses. Although the team was not the final winner in its competitions with other schools, each game was an exciting match. In the first scrimmage, Forest Lake lead 1 -0 for three quarters before giving up three late goals to lose 2-3. In the home-away series versus Marshall University High, the team lost 2-5 at home, then were beaten 1-3 in a see-saw battle. In perhaps the most exciting match the soccer team shut-out Minneapolis West before they tied it with seven minutes remaining at 1 -1. Then, with 40 seconds left in the second overtime period, the ball found the net and West edged Forest Lake 1-2. As one of the most popular sports in the world, soccer is here to stay and those who have participated in Forest Lake soccer know why. 5 1. This year’s captains Jeff Reiman, Dave Gustafson and Randy Haus became important team leaders during the season. Under these captains some outstanding wrestlers emerged, including Dave Aim, Rick Schwab and Dave Leckie. Rick Shuster will be remembered as one of the most improved team members during the season. Meets included not only conference competitions, but also the Forest Lake Invitational in December and a trip to Grand Rapids during January. Under the direction of coaches Bob Dettmer, Tom Pogreba and John Reiman, FLHS can be proud of their wrestling team. I. This Ranger is striving hard for a take down. 2 Rick Shuster fighting vigorously for his pin. 3. Another noble try for the Rangers. 4. Johann Piekert readies for his reversal 5. Dave Leckie waits for the referee to call the pin. 10 Wrestling 117 Girls’ basketball... a team effort This year’s Girls’ Basketball team has had a good season. The team realized they would have to pull together and work for an active and winning record. This was accomplished, but only through hard work and the desire for a good team that can work as a unit and win together. 1. The ball is a real steal as a Ranger takes a chance. 2. Keeping the other team on the run is tricky business. 3 A long throw is executed by Jill Nelson. 4 A disagreement halts action on the court 5. A Ranger keeps the ball in her possession. 6 Making a solid catch is Jill Nelson 7. A jump ball starts the court action 8 Jill Nelson takes a chance to sink a basket. 9. Moving the ball down the court takes speed 118 Girls'Basketball 120 Boys'Basketball Teamwork leads to a satisfying effort Boys’ basketball started out the year with only one returning letter winner, Scott Kohls. After a few difficulties at the beginning of the year the team shaped up and started playing like a real team out to win. This only came about after some very hard work to become a unified group of people who always worked towards a common team effort. 1. In the game Rangers vs Moundsview, Jim Jorgenson is enticed with a tip off. 2 A desperate attempt was made to gain control over the ball. 3. David Matuseski shows a lot of effort when he reaches for the ball 4 Another victorious attempt of the Rangers to recover the ball 5. A jump ball including Greg Bower. 6. Take a break when you can. 7. Bucketmen attempt a shot. Boys’Basketball 121 Spirit-filled Rangers 1. Varsity Wrestling, Front Row: Dan Aim, Brian Empey, Gary Jeans, Randy Haus, Mark Fredrickson. My thoughts and feelings are in a mess, cause what I’m thinking is hard to express. But I’ve never seen you without a smile or grin, both of you were so great and would never give in. You were always fun whatever we’d do, and when you smiled, it lasted the whole day through. You made work exciting, whenever you were there, but now there’s something missing, it just seems bare. You were very special to me — there is no doubt, so many good times we had, I’ll never forget about. The precious tears for you rolled in like a tide, the love for you which no one could hide. I remember you well, clear as day, but I’m empty handed with nothing to say. You were so easy going, with many things to share, life seems so tough, and it doesn't seem quite fair. Your wishes and dreams were set from your soul, you’ve made many happy, and that was your goal. The loss of your friendship, I try to deny, you were always there, it’s so hard to say good-bye. But it's not for good, there’s never an end, I love you a lot and I want to Thank-You again. Cheryl Tyler John Rinke Memorial 207 ’80 IT IS NOT AN END, BUT A BEGINNING, OF OUR UNIQUENESS WE DO NOT SEEK A REASON, BUT A PURPOSE, FOR LIFE. TO US, THE FUTURE LIES NOT IN WHAT WE WILL DO, BUT IN WHAT WE, AS PEOPLE, DO NOW. Seniors 209 A Aadland, Kristi L. 160 Abbott.
