But why be surprised when so many new people are involved in the elections! In our own county, students helped elect Jim Trudeau, and in our state, many also helped elect Al Quie as governor and new senators, Rudy Boshewitz and Dave Durenberger. For as future decision makers, we have started out as a very strong force and have the power to influence the country. Who knows, some day the seniors of Forest Lake High School may be electing one of our class members to be a community or statewide βsomebody β. 1. Some good and some bad which none of the seniors will ever forget. Upon entering the big school as sophomores many were in awe of the size, and others were shocked to see they were at the bottom of the ladder. There will always be memories of being a sophomore, and an underclassman. As juniors we were in the center of things. We still had to look up to the seniors but now we had someone to look down upon, the new sophomores. Finally the year 78-79 came, and the class was at the top of the ladder. The year passed with many activities and many decisions. As seniors, we had to look toward the future and plan our life. The end of the year came quickly, before we knew it it was time to pick up our diplomas and say so long and keep in touch to our friends and goodbye forever to FLHS. 1. The students were Eva Pettersson, Nico Hassid, and Per Kristen Skaran. Eva came to Forest Lake through ASSE, an exchange program. Eva is from Sweden. Nico was an AFS exchange student from Brussels, Belgium. Per wasn't connected with an exchange program but is from Norway and stayed with distant relatives who live in the Forest Lake School District. He had a unique situation. The Skaran family moved in 1861 from Norway to the United States. Per is part of the Norwegian family and Mark Summersβ family, who he stayed with is part of the U.S. family. Each exchange student anticipated their arrival in America. All three students have traveled before, but Lisa Beckman Elizabeth Beier Melanie Benoy John Berg Carrie Berge Vicki Bergeron Foreign Students Add to FLHS this is their first visit to America. Their first impression of America was that the land was flat. They were all used to more hilly terrain and mountains. The size of American cars astonished them. Nico was stunned by seeing βlittle girls driving big cars.'' Eva likes the atmosphere and the relationship of students and teachers here at Forest Lake. Eva was also faced with decisions of her future, she is hoping to go into journalism. At 17, Eva has already completed her first year of college. Nico has completed twelve years of school and Per has completed nine years of school and one year of college. In their countries you can be finished with school after nine years. The students enjoy life in America. Eva and Nico feel that people are more relaxed. They all feel that school routines are similar here to their countries. The day generally begins at 8:00 but finishes at 3:30. A new experience for Per is being located so close to school He lives in a private house in Norway during the school week and goes home on weekends. Eva feels that sports and activities are an important part of the school here. Nico and Per also enjoy American sports. In their countries they have no after school or extra-curricular activities. We here at Forest Lake High School have enjoyed them throughout this past year and wish them luck as they return to their home land. 1. Per Kristen Skaran from Norway. 2. The play, a musical from the roaring twenties, was directed by Mr. Henry Hebert βThe Boyfriendβ was filled with music, dance, and romance. The cast put in many long hours working on the dance steps and songs. Many found it difficult to adjust to the βfoot loose and fancy freeβ period of the twenties. Eventually, all found the secret and enjoyed the production, making it more play than work. This year to promote curiosity the cast gave two sneak previews to the student body. The previews were only 15 minutes in length, but that was long enough to capture the studentsβ hearts. As they left, you could hear the humming of songs and an occasional βpoo-poo-pi- dooβ. βThe Boyfriend , although short in production time, still lingers long in the heart. 92 CD 00 1. We, on the Forester staff feel that moments make the year Dedication, is the key word in producing a yearbook Working on the Forester is more than a full time job. You have to devote many hours, weekends and holidays to the preparation of the book There are many steps that needed to be completed before one page in the book was finished. The basics for a yearbook are: pictures, copy, captions, and a layout style. We are proud of our 79 Forester. We were able to add more color, more pages, and more variety to the book. We hope that we captured many memories and prized moments. Another publication in our school is the Forest Breeze. The Breeze was published monthly by an editorial staff of fourteen people Paul Petrella and Ralph Streater led the staff in designing and creating the paper. The Breeze is published to inform the student body and public of points of interest in FLHS. 1. They are promoters of school spirit, they're event planners and organizers, they're just one group of caring leaders at Forest Lake High School. Throughout the year the Student Council has sponsored many school activities: Homecoming week, Blood Drive, College Fair, Teacher's Tea, Halloween Dress Up Day, Elf-O- Grams, Santa pictures, Dances and Valentines messages. A candy store was opened up after school for snackers. A spirit program was also initiated in our school. The student council is made up of ten members from each graduating class, of which there are four officers; President, Orleen Craig; V.P. Treasurer, Rick Verner; Secretary, Dawn Krinke; Parliamentarian, Andy Valenty. Starting this year the three exchange students, Per Skaran, Eva Patterson, and Nico Hassid, were included in the council as an honorary council. The class councils are also representatives of the student body. There are six students on the sophomore, junior, and senior councils. The councils work on fund raising projects for their class. The juniors plan the prom and the seniors plan senior week, class mottos, announcements, caps and gowns and numerous other things. LU o Hot Fingers Make Warm Work Office Education Association (OEA) is a club activity of the office education program. OE is a cooperative organization where students work part time in an office in our community for credit and pay. The officers for OEA were: Marcie Paugel, president; Jody Eichinger, vice-president; Sherry Crane, secretary; Julie Olson, parliamentarian; and Barb Robertson, historian. There were 13 members in the OEA group this year The National theme for OEA was β βOEA to Serve the Nationβ. The club worked together to help the school and the community The girls worked at the school blood drive β typing and in the canteen. They also took part in national OEA week. During the week of Feb. 12-16 they had a baby face contest, a guess the number of candy hearts in the jar contest, a balloon event, a Mr. Legs contest, and a Valentine's tea for the teachers. In the community they donated enough food for two Christmas baskets for needy families. They also went caroling to local retirement homes during Christmas OEA looks forward to the future. 1 Jody Eichinger, Julie Olson. Serving as officers for the club were: Kelly Coyer, President; Laurie Dittbrenner, Vice-President; Sue Clemens, Secretary; and Jody Manfredini, Treasurer. The advisor of the group was Miss OβConnell. The goals of the club were to build skills in the areas of personal growth, and home and community involvement. There were many meetings and events held throughout the year. In October, Halloween cookies were made and sold. In November, the chapter sent eight members to the district meeting. For a school project, FHA members helped at the blood drive. In February cook books were sold to raise money for the chapter. The money was used to go on a trip. Last year, the chapter went to the Amana Colonies in Iowa with the Chisago City FHA Chapter. 1. Led by captains Mark Moraczewski and Doug Banta, and girlsβ captains Dawn Krinke and Dawn Marsh, the team began its season in August with two practices a day The four conference meets (triangular) were soon held at Como Park, while team also participated in four invitationals throughout the area. Among the invitationals was the second annual Forest Lake Invitational. Both teams did very well with the boysβ team bringing home their own trophy. The girlsβ team finished fifth in the conference meet, and seventh in the region meet; the boysβ team finished fourth in the conference, and fifth in the region. Pre-season practices, after school practices and participation in games gave the girls a healthy taste of the hectic life. When not preparing physically for Jhe game, they prepared mentally, by getting themselves psyched for the game. This year a new face appeared on the coaching side of the court: Mr Gunderson. Gunderson took Ms. Paulsonβs position as head coach of the team. Co-captains for the basketball team were seniors Laurie Young and Cathy Larson. Between Chuck Schultz practicing his lines and Leslie Lewis' and Sandy Sweere's rap sessions during class, it is suprising that the choir performed a couple of decent concerts this year. J.L.'s hair has grayed a bit since the beginning of the year. This is mainly due to listening to Kurt Brungardt and Tom Boorsma discuss their Saturday Night skiing adventures. When J.L. is not in class, our competent president Jenny Welch took over the slave driver's position. With whip in hand, she attempts to draw musical ability from the alto section.
