The Rush of... Student Life 8 Organizations 52 Athletics 78 Faculty and Academics 102 Seniors 124 Underclassmen 152 Ads 174 FOREST FALL 1977 2 3 ACTIVITIES It seems we were always rushing. To catch rides, get papers in on time, get ourselves to class and eat lunches. Our days were filled with friends, homework, and pepfests, and our nights were filled with games, jobs, and dances. Sometimes the same routine got monotonous, but the thought of a forthcoming vacation kept us going. 9 LUNCH TOKEN AND TICKET NEEDED TO RECEIVE-LUNCH 10 Student Life ■ Young Life And Guitar Lessons Add Variety Along with the start of school, student life began also. Guitar lessons were offered to broaden musical talent. Young Life, a community club, was new to the Forest Lake area this year and involved both teenagers and parents. J's Pizza and Burger Chef were weekend favorites. Some students found they had no time for community activities because of school commitments. Student Life 11 Student Life 13 Summer 15 Early Summer School Begins Hectic Summer When finals are completed and lockers are cleaned out, our reward is summer vacation. Although summer is a leisure time, many of our hours were spent with jobs, hobbies, and even school. This past summer marked the first year elective courses were offered in the curriculum for summer school. Rush Begins on August 24 The first day of school started out different than the year before. The first difference and probably the most obvious, was that school opened a week earlier on August 24. Students went to TA for their first class where schedules and lockers were given out. After these were taken care of, the new attendance policy was explained. Another change in this school year was the time in which school ended each day. Bus routes picked up students at the junior high schools first, which caused the senior high to be released later. Included in the new policy was increased contact between teachers and parents. A progress report was sent to parents following every fourth student’s absence. This eliminated excused and unexcused absences, for any class missed is important, regardless of the reason for that absence. Besides these new changes at Forest Lake Senior High there was the regular hustle and bustle of the first day of school. Sophomores looked lost, juniors recognized a higher status and seniors realized that they were at the top, at last. 1. Students listen attentively while their TA advisor gives out first day instructions. 2. Paces show mixed emotions of the first day of school. 3. Mr. Ashby. Mr. Motschenbacher and Kevin Pitcher look for the first vacation day. 4. Mr Mills assigns lockers to his TA group. 5. Sophomores show their usual look of confusion as they search for their TA room. 6. Sophomores Tracey Flermoen and Betsy Bartlett stand in disbelief at the size of the Senior High. 7. Mr. Anderson and Mr. Hallin assign study hall seats. Opening Day 17 Blistery Homecoming Because of the season's first snowstorm, the Homecoming game was held on Monday, October 10th. “Cook the Cardinals and have a Ranger Roast”, was the slogan chosen for the week’s festivities. To start with, on Monday the juniors took on the mighty seniors in the traditional powder puff’ game, with a tying score of 6-6 in overtime. The fate of the game was decided by the flip of a coin, in the seniors favor. Forest Lake’s first disco dance came after, with pronto pups to eat. Tuesday, all day the tension mounted as the Coronation Ceremony of the Homecoming King and Queen was awaited. That night the King and Queen helped judge skit night and a fine effort was made by all that participated. The winning skit was called “Oh, Them Golden Gritters”, by the “Seniors”. A car bash led the festivities on Wednesday during the lunches. Thursday night the 2nd Annual Homecoming Parade came through downtown. There were class floats, clowns, running football players, a band and the royalty. The cooking of the Cardinal was held after in the hockey rink along with a huge bonfire. On Friday there was a pepfest with the drum section marching down the hall playing the street beat with the cheerleaders doing a routine behind. Everyone assembled in the gym to watch the football players having a carameled apple race or in reality a carameled onion race. Then came the snow and the game was cancelled, but the Polka-Jacs still played for the Alumni-Polka. Long dresses and suits set the atmosphere of the Semi-formal, along with corsages, punch, and cake on Saturday night. After the weekend, Monday brought the rescheduled game. The weather didn’t dampen spirits though, as the Rangers cooked the Cards with a rousing score of 9-0. 1. The gals paid a dime an inch, cheek to cheek, to get their guy in. Bib overalls, plaid shirts, freckles, haybales, pigtails and straw hats all accompanied the hillbilly scene. Even though Mr. Hebert was absent for two weeks, the cast rose to the challenge and took an interest in their individual parts, striving to achieve a group pride. Although there were no designated stars, each crew member attributed to the total success of the show. Because of the change in language, the lines were feared by some. But by the repetition of practicing hour after hour, it became a part of them to express—through gestures, actions, and motions. The show held the interest of the old and young alike. Never before has a school play performed matinees. There were two daytime and nighttime shows. For the Thursday matinee, Kellogg High School brought 120 students, joining 40 senior citizens from the Forest Lake community, to the performance. On Friday, November 11, the theatre department held a Sophomore Appreciation Day with 530 students attending. With schools being closed, there were many activities to be found. Sleeping late followed by lazy days was common. Many took the opportunity to catch up on their practicing, or cleaning up the house. Florida, Hawaii and the Bahamas were suddenly filled with eager vacationer-s ready to catch the warm sun’s rays. But those not so fortunate stayed close to home to enjoy Minnesota’s wonderful winter weather. Activities during the energy break included: 1. Angel in the snow (Mary Kay Morley). 2. Taking up skiing (Becky Mickelsen, Mary Kay Morley). 3. Sleeping late (Mary Kay Morley). 4. The wonder of nature. 5. Game shows and soap operas (Rosemarie Morley). 6. Energy Week 27 FFA Members Host FFA Week National FFA Week was held during the week of February 18-25. FFA week was honored by the Forest Lake FFA for the promotion of FFA and fun. Activities included were chainsawing, arm wrestling, corn guess, pie eating, seed spitting, corn shelling, egg toss, nail drive and the annual treasure hunt. A silver milk can was the treasure and twenty dollars was the reward. Shawn Dolan was the lucky finder of the treasure, finding it under the candy machines. Coffee was served to the staff and all faculty on Thursday, February 23. Because Forest Lake’s chapter is not restricted to only local activities, many are kept busy by participating in state activities. 1. A wide range of events, from local to international, provided an impetus for change and, for many people, a lot of memories. Peace, or lack of peace, was the dominating theme in international relations. For the first time in centuries, the leaders of Egypt and Israel — Sadat and Begin — met to discuss the possibility of cooperation between the two countries. Racial tensions between black and white people erupted in South Africa and inflation rocked the European market. President Carter spent much of his time in diplomatic meetings with the worlds' leaders. Minnesota had its own share of history-making news. The beloved senior-senator, Hubert Humphrey passed away in January and lay in state in the rotunda of the capitol at Washington D.C. and at the Minnesota capitol in St. Paul. Polk County residents attempted to prevent a power line from going through their land. Farmers again went on strike, protesting their financial situation. The focus on education became a priority as pressure- groups claimed schools were advocating “Secular Humanism”. Forest Lake Schools were in the thick of this battle — the sexual education program was especially under fire. Also, Central Jr. High was partially condemned and voters were given a new proposal offering a larger junior high in its place. Overall, the year was filled with events of great importance — some dismal, some hopeful, and optimism became a necessary attitude. 1. The farmers went to the capitol to fight for their rights. 2. The power line on the farmers' land caused many clashes between police and farmers. 3. The condemning of the 1902 section of Central Junior High brought back fond memories to its former students. 4. Many came to honor the late Senator Humphrey while he lies in the state capitol. 5. The school’s curriculum was under the watchful eyes of the public. 6. President Carter welcomes the Humphreys back to Washington. 7. Although the Happy Warrior was not always in the best of health, he still had the will to carry on. 30 Current Events Class Leadership in 1977-1978 Every year in the spring, each class elects from eight to ten representatives to serve on the Student Council. These students work to better or improve, the atmosphere here, at Forest Lake Senior High. They've really done a fine job, too, under the direction of their advisor, Mr. Franzen. You’d be surprised at all of the behind the scene action that takes place ... for instance, they planned the election of Class Council members, the Teachers’ Tea, and also came up with new ideas for Homecoming week. The Council also took on a successful new project this year in conjunction with the guidance department; planning and carrying out the College, Vocational-Technical School, and Military Fair. This year, the 1977-1978 Student Council met every Tuesday on a rotating schedule: a 7:00 A.M. meeting, a during school meeting, and then an after school meeting. President Mary Kay Morley, made agendas which were followed every week, and the minutes were read by Secretary Betsy Webb. Students and faculty were always invited to sit In on any meeting. Each class elected six people to represent them within the school system on their Class Council. The sophomores got together the half time entertainment for the powder puff game and organized a dance. The juniors planned Sadie Hawkins as well as prom. The seniors hosted Senior Week. 1. They instruct us through classrooms, sports, clubs, activities, jobs, and vocations. There has been an even stronger urge to bind students and teachers together. Realizing the impor- tance of a good education, students made the most of their schooling while the teachers provided the materials necessary for the students’ growth, development, and knowledge. With the added interest in the special class- rooms, the SLBP and math rooms welcomed the help offered by students, who, in their spare time, taught and assisted students with their reading, writing, and math assignments. While the student gains knowledge, the tutor gains in both his knowledge of the subject and in his ability to work with others. 1. Our friends are important to us because of our dependence and need for them. We have gone to plays, clubs, movies, parties, and sports events. We have gone with one special friend or group of special friends. When we are with our friends, we can act silly or serious, and we can confidently say “they understand and appreciate us”. Walking down any street, or even a hall at Forest Lake Senior High, you might observe a girl wearing boots, gauchos, a cowl neck sweater with a stick pin, and maybe she would have a flower or comb in her hair. A boy might be seen wearing a rugby shirt, with a Farrah Fawcett T- Shirt underneath, a pair of Levi’s, and of course, a pair of athletic tennis shoes. During the week you might go to a football game or stay home and watch “Soap” or “Three’s Company” with a glass of Pepsi Light in your hand. On the weekend your boyfriend might pick you up in a four-wheel drive truck, then take you to Star Wars even though you would have preferred to see Saturday Night Fever. If you are a poster collector, you wouldn’t be able to pass up the Charlies Angels or Sylvester Stalone poster. And if you are a music fanatic you might go to a Kiss concert. Listening to the radio you would hear songs being performed by Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Bee Gees, Aerosmith or Neil Diamond. If you are a sentimental you would reminisce the 50’s and 60s by listening to a memorable record of Elvis. 1977-1978 brought back fashions, music, and fads from the past, but also was unique with its own new style. 1. Here are the shoes of 1978 as worn by Sheri Little. 2. Jenny Ostlund wears the famous stick pin on her cowl 3. Remember the shirts sold by the Brothers and the cheerleaders? 4. Another fashion is the sweater tied around the shoulders, worn by Penny Plain. 5. Paul Helin admires the beauty and warmth of Sue Burke s cowl sweater. 6. Ski sweaters are super! 7. Bibs are also in, as shown by Jackie LeVesseur. 8. Two fashion extremes—the rugby shirt is worn by Jordene Johnson and the below the knee dress by Dawn Gudmundson. Fads Fashions 43 44 Money Matters It’s Tough To Be A Teenager As usual, the students of Forest Lake Senior High School were not immune to the prevailing economic conditions in the United States. Although the financial outlook was not necessarily dismal, the effects of inflation were felt. During the 1977-78 school year, FLHS students had to pay $.55 for a lunch. However, they didn’t protest too much, in light of an expanded menu that included several meal choices. School activities provided many people with an evenings' entertainment. Attending one of the Rangers’ many athletic events remained a fairly inexpensive past time and was complimented by a quick bite at one of the many local eating establishments. Outside interests—especially movies, were not so kind to the students’ bank account. The cost of clothes continues to increase; it was not rare to purchase a single sweater at an average clothing store for $25.00. Yes, this year was of great economic concern to everyone. Seniors really began to understand the value of the dollar. For those preparing for college was an extremely expensive adventure: much was spent for registration fees and college examinations, and finances often played a major role in planning for a post-secondary education. Remembrances of high school years (class rings, letter jackets, etc.) were just more ways to say good-bye to ones’ earnings. It seemed, that just being a teenager in the 1977-78 school year was cause enough for financial ruin, but a lot of good times and good buys often came as a result! In order to help you remember the 1977-78 prices fill in the blank spaces under the items on the dollar bill on the opposite page. 1. Darla LaRoque and Becky Mickelsen joyously anticipate a luscious snack. 2. The most popular shoe of the year. 3. Star Wars made box office history in the year of 1977. 4. Students wait in line to receive their lunch tickets. Money Matters 45 M 3 The Work Force During the school year, there are many things to be done. Homework alone can keep you busy four nights out of five. Then there are the athletics, organizations, and dances to take the rest of whatever time is left over. Yet even with all of these time consuming events there are those students here at FLHS that find the time and ambition to hold a job. Some work as waitresses, others as cooks, secretaries, sales clerks, and many other occupations. These people spend up to forty or more hours a week on the job, and yet they still have time to keep up their grades and participate in school activities. 1. Julie Feils straightens up behind the counter. 2. Phil Burgeson packs groceries. 3. Sue Olson shows a calculator to a customer. 4. Loading groceries appears to be an easy job for Mark Summers.. 5. It seems so far away, but the senior class faced the future as it came. There had been college fairs, posters, and counselors which helped us to decide our futures. We anticipated many of our futures to be filled with new people to meet, new places to see, and new lands to travel. For others they looked towards hours at a job, marriage, or college. But yet for many students, they left FLHS with their futures still undecided. Yet tears were shed as the class of 1978 went off to conquer their world. For the underclassmen, school and jobs were still in their daily routine. There would still be games, clubs, pepfests, organizations, homework, fun, and memories. Their time will come, but for the seniors, the future is now. 1 The ACT Tests stand ready for the seniors. 2. Is there really life after high school? 3. Some, lacking the enthusiasm from the students, took longer to come around. With the help and dedication of a few members, these clubs found themselves struggling through a tough but worthwhile year. 53 The Beat Goes On Music could be heard from the band rooms during fourth and sixth hours this year. The sounds were made by the Concert, Varsity and Ranger Bands. The Concert Band is under the direction of Rollin Nelson and the Varsity and Ranger Bands are under the direction of Paul Redmond. This was a very musical year for the members of the three bands. During the summer months marching was taking place. The band marched as a single unit in various parades. This was the last year for the marchers to wear the previous set of black uniforms as the new maroon and gold uniforms arrived. The marching band consisted of members of concert and varsity band, providing entertainment at the home football games. On the second of October, members from all three bands went to the University of Minnesota along with other bands from our state. Stage Band was going strong for only their second year in existence. Quite a few members from last year were back. Stage Band contributed much to the concerts throughout the year. The winter and spring concerts were both a big success. Many different arrangements and styles were studied and performed at each of the concerts. 1. Cheryl Booth takes a breather as Matt Moraczewski plays on. 2. Mr. Nelson prepares for his next class. 3. Bands 57 58 Choir Tra-La-La If you ever heard the sound of clear, ringing voices singing down the hall, “Mi-Me-Ma-Mo-Mu”, you’d have realized that it was the FLHS choir once again warming up for another hard working hour. After director Jim Lindstrom finished saying, “If you don’t follow my tempo, get your own choir and I’m not waving my arms for the exercise”, the choirs were ready to perform for two concerts, winter and spring. Also, many students prepared year long for the state music contest held in the spring. Once again A Cappella Choir was heard with the mixture of both male and female voices. Besides singing at the concerts, they also sang at additional engagements, such as the Elim Lutheran Church in Scandia and various school exchange trips around the area. From the mixed choir, a group of twelve students were chosen to sing in Mezmora, the school’s pop group. Mezmora sang a variety of popular tunes at clubs, the pop concert, and both the winter and spring concerts. Treble choir consists only of female voices. They made their sweet sounding appearance at both the winter and spring concerts. 1 A CAPPELLA CHOIR; BACK ROW: Don Sweere. This year the new captain, Debbie Avery, worked hard with her corps to get ready for the foot- ball halftime and homecoming shows. This years’ drill was done to “McArthur’s Park.” They also made performances at the Home- coming parade and coronation. After taking a short break this winter, they again resumed this spring and summer to once again lead the band in many parades, including the Minneapolis Aquatennial. Guiding the marching band with poise and precision was drum major Sue Mulvihill. Sue’s leadership of the Forest Lake marching band was greatly appreciated by all band members and Director Paul Redmond. Certainly a job well done! The majorettes have brought another added feature to the band and performed at the football games as well as numerous summer parades. Together with the flag corps, the marching band had a fantastic field to follow. 1. MAJORETTES BACK ROW: Lori Lundeen. Sue Picotte. Dana McCool. FRONT ROW: Maureen Collins. 2. There were thirty-five cheerleaders and although males were encouraged to try out, none did. The Brothers, a highly spirited group of young men went to various games and meets, promoting spirit with their own style. These groups have cheered their teams to victory, organized pep fests, parents’ nights and promoted the sale of bus tickets and buttons. Cheerleaders Letterman 63 Publishers Produce Memories Every month the Forest Breeze is produced by a group of thirty dedicated people, who spend most of their spare time putting together the school newspaper. The purpose in publication is to inform the student body and public of school orientated activities and current issues of interest to the students. The editor-in-chief, whose main responsibility is to tie up all the loose strings and make sure everything is ready for publications time is Scott Fearing. Publishing is done by the Forest Lake Times. There are ten other editors working along side Scott and business manager—Don Sweere, who takes care of finding patrons and last, but surely not least, is their ever present, always lending a helping hand advisor, Ralph Streater. Another form of publications in our school is our annual Forester. It is produced each year by a very small group of hard working, dedicated people. There are three editors and two business managers, as well as some very capable staff members. The Forester staff spends many hours (not to mention a few sleepless nights) putting it all together, with the help of Mrs. Redmond, their helping, patient advisor. Our yearbook is the only possession we have that enables us to bring back a flood of memories with the flip of a page. 1. BREEZE EDITORS: Mike Black. Judy Hebert. The store was run by students with Ms. Kaye Casey as the advisor. Prolifique, advised by Ms. Casey, was roaring this year. Although there was only one issue, it was packed with student work. The debate team proved their competitiveness this year by participating in many tournaments, including a trip to Watertown, South Dakota. Advised by Mr. Ralph Streater, the debaters showed their strength by winning many individual trophies and metals. 1. Jane Jergens and Dave Dunbar prepare for another debate meet. 2. Each attended various French and Spanish Restaurants, giving the students the chance to broaden his or her “world beyond the hamburger”. Besides eating, both clubs participated in other activities such as roller skating and viewing foreign films. French Club and AFS presented a second place skit at Skit Night for this year's Homecoming. At Christmas time, residents of Birchwood were serenaded by these carolers as they brought to them some seasonal French songs of which a few had English equivalents. Mrs. Nancy Sagstuen (French Club) and Mr. Al Franzen (Spanish club) put a lot of work and time into preparing for all club orientated activities. The most rewarding accomplishment is to actually visit these countries. Both Spanish and French Clubs contributed towards the sending of students across the threshold of FLHS into the experience of a lifetime. 1. As soon as a bus could be loaded, the students were on their way to an evening of skiing. Under the direction of Mr. Branson and Mr. Hallen, the skiers went to various ski hills in the area. Among the many surrounding hills, the ski club found its way to Troll- haugen, Snowcrest and the old favorite, Wild Mountain, rotating its weekly trips between the three. One all day trip was also planned to a resort. With the wide selection of hills and trails to ski on at every resort, each person who enjoyed skiing, from the most experienced to the beginners, could have a good time while learning or simply trying to improve. The Forest Lake Weight Training club was instituted this year to give students an oppor- tunity to engage in a controlled and or- ganized conditioning program after school. Students who wish to condition for athletics or those just interested in improving their over-all body condition through the use of weights and flexibility exercises comprise the membership. The club meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 2:40. Rick Anderson and John Backes are the weight supervisors who coordinate club activities. 1. Miss O’Connell was the advisor and there were about 25 active members. The group has participated in many community activities throughout the year. A Scandinavian Dinner was held in November to raise money for a home ec scholarship. Other events were making pillows and preparing grooming packages for Cambridge State Hospital. The club sold helpful hints books to raise money for a cabin for the handicapped at Camp Courage. When the chapter is not busy doing something for others they do fun activities. They have gone to dinner theatres, Ice Capades and had winter parties and outings. The big event of the year is going to the state meeting at the Radisson Hotel. The American Field Service Club deals with exchange students. Each year two Forest Lake students are sent to a foreign country. Jon Trombley was one of the Forest Lake students; he was sent to Brazil this summer. Jackie Royer spent this year in Belgium. Forest Lake received three exchange students; Richard Hoffschneider was the student sponsored by the AFS program. Richard is a senior from the Mariana Islands. Richard was the guest at the welcome picnic at O’Brien State Park. His 18th birthday produced his first American T-Shirt. The Forest Lake Students met him at swimming, rollerskating and canoeing parties. He was also at many other activities. • AFS also got together with the French Club and put on a skit for Homecoming. Their efforts won them second place, demonstrating the school spirit that they helped spread throughout the year. 1. The boys’ team lead by captains Lee Nelson, Rich Haus, and Doug Banta had a very successful season. Although hampered by some injuries during the season, steady junior varsity runners moved up and helped hold the team together. One of the team’s highlights of the year was the Forest Lake Invitational, where varsity placed three runners to win the meet. Junior varsity also won to make Forest Lake the outstanding entry of the invitational. The team finished the season with a fifth place in Regional competition. The girls also did an excellent job this season, led by captains Sandy Olson, Rena Marier, and Bridget Dolan. The girls also turned out an excellent result from the Forest Lake Invitational, first place. This was only the girls’ second season as a team, but they still had the talent to finish seventh in their region out of thirteen entries. Many athletic sports can only be seen during certain seasons of the year, but many of the Cross Country members run all year long. Coached by Mr. Dettmer, Mr. Reiman and Mr. Pogreba, the team worked hard and produced remarkable results. This years’ tri-captains were Joel Buys, Tom Moore, and Jeff Tessier. “The team has been having some ups and downs but will go on strong for the regions,” commented Buys. This year, a change was made by the North Suburban Conference concerning the order of the individual matches according to the weight classes. Members of the conference decided that meets should not start at the 98 pound weight class, instead, the meets would progressively start with the next highest weight class. With the support of many fans and the mat aides, along with hard work and self determination, this year’s team had a very successful season. 1. Basketball Team Gains New Coach This season the basketball team has a new coach, Mr. Sam Mills. It isn’t easy for a coach to come into a new school and take over a basketball team. Coach Mills didn’t know what to expect from the North Surburban Conference or from the boys. However, he found a core of hard working athletes, anxious to improve their basketball skills. Even though they suffered a discouraging season, the individual improvement could be seen. Mr. Mills felt that they had improved as much as anyone in the league by the end of the season. With only three seniors on the team coaches Doug Peltier and Ken Mikolajczyk looked towards the juniors and sophomores in the hope of building an even stronger team for the upcoming years. Even though the team was hampered by injuries throughout the season, the boys made up for it by the hustling, passing and shooting. With Steve Kroska the leading scorer, the team broke record after record set by the FLHS hockey players in previous years. Despite constant pressure, goaltender Tom Heryla also managed to turn in outstanding performances game after game. The growing interest in hockey by the community added many fans and spirit to the games. Hockey 99 We Got the Spirit Yes We Do You can be a player, manager, pompon girl, statistician, pep-band member, cheerleader, mat aid, concessions worker, or just a true Ranger fan. It takes a combination of all these people and more to make a team and create the pride and the spirit of Forest Lake. Although everyone does not actually compete in a sport, they could consider themselves just as important as the competitive athletes themselves. Coaches appreciated the help of the statisticians, and mat aids who helped at the games and tournaments. They provided spirit and helped back the team. Cheerleaders and pep-band members worked together to get Rangers fans into the spirit of things. These enthusiasts take pride in their teams and were a great incentive to the crowd and the players. The students at Forest Lake Senior High truly do have something to be proud of. The spirit of FLHS was exhibited this year by many students in many different ways. Taking pride in FLHS and having been an active part of sporting events will remain one of the most precious of high school memories. 1. MAT AIDS BACK ROW: Jackie Nelson. Classes were formed for the high potential and the low achieving students. Through joint effort of students and staff members, many educational goals were achieved during the school year. FLHS Staff Works Towards Common Goals Each staff member at FLHS plays an extremely important part in the achievement of school goals. The role of the administrators take on organizing and managing the large student body and numerous faculty members. Each teacher also works not only with individual student needs, but towards the attainment of departmental goals as agreed upon by department members and administrators. All administrators and faculty members also realize the value of the secretaries, aides, cooks and custodians. We remember our classes, goals, and achievements. What an honor it was to have underclassmen look up to us, always remembering we were setting the example for those to follow. As the seniors waved a fond farewell to FLHS they reminisced of fading memories. Memories of their sophomore year. Learning that it was tough at the bottom they were determined to be heard, and they were. As they grew and matured in their physical appearance so they did academically. As juniors they were upperclassmen to the incoming sophomores, yet underclassmen to the seniors. As the middle class they still strived to make themselves heard and the sophomores and seniors paid attention. Another summer passed and the class of 78 came back even stronger, ready to take over their reign as seniors. They succeeded in demonstrating how it was done to the underclassmen by hosting a Ranger Roast and feasting on the Cardinals. They mastered the art of leadership with their control of the juniors for Slave Day. As the months passed the seniors became involved in plans for the future, by getting into the “ACT” by taking the American College Test. The seniors broght their leadership to the Junior-Senior Prom where they showed others the steps to take. The seniors proved you could have perfect attendance, as the whole class of 78 gathered for graduation commencement. 1. Liz Fox works on her art. 2. Kerrin Burke demonstrates her style of serve. 3. With no immediate worry about their future, they energetically made plans for their year. They obtained their drivers' licenses, joined new clubs, took tests and received results. With the appreciation of their new found independence, they watched their tardies and absences. Seeing the example of the upperclassmen, they anxiously await their senior year. 153 A Stuck In The Middle The class of 79 started out last fall representing the junior class for the 1977-78 school year. Some of the events that took place during the school year included the junior girls against the senior girls in the Powder Puff game during Home- coming week. The junior class sponsored the 77-78 Sadie Hawkins dance, giving the braver girls a chance to ask the guys to the hoe-down in Dogpatch USA. The junior class also sponsored the junior-senior prom in the spring of 78. Many attended and participated in extracurricular activities, but overall, most were thinking about their futures and where it would lead them. For some, the future will hold going directly to a job while others will be furthering their education. As the year drew to an end, the joys and sorrows felt throughout the year were drawn to a close and a final farewell was said to the graduating senior class. For sophomores it also meant meeting new friends, as Central and Southwest combined to form the Class of ’80. In a combined effort they demonstrated their imagination to entertain fans during the half- time of the Powder Puff game with a turkey chase. Reuniting later in the year the Class of '80, while studying Shakespeare in their English classes, were entertained by the Theatre Club with a performance of a Midsummer Night’s Dream”. If he Is wise, discovers that life is a mixture of good days and bad. victory and defeat, give and take. ’ He learns that it doesn't pay to be a sensitive soul; that he should let some things go over his head like water off a duck's back. He learns that he who loses his temper usually loses out. He learns that all men have burnt toast for breakfast now and then, and that he shouldn't take the other fellow's grouch too seriously He learns that carrying a chip on his shoulder is the easiest way to get into a fight. He learns that the quickest way to become unpopular is to carry tales and gossip about others. • He learns that buck-passing always turns out to be a boomerang, and that it never pays He comes to realize that the business could run along perfectly well without him. He learns that it doesn't matter so much who gets the credit so long as the business shows a profit. He learns that even the janitor is human and that it doesn't do any harm to smile and say Good Morningeven if it is raining. He learns that most of the other fellows are as ambitious as he is. that they have brains that are as good or bet- ter, and that hard work and not cleverness Is the secret of success. He learns to sym- pathize with the youngster coming into the business, because he remembers how bewildered he was when he first started out. He learns not to worry when he loses an order, because experience has shown that If he always gives his best, his average will break pretty well He learns that no man ever got to first base alone and that it Is only through cooperative effort that we move on to better things. He learns that bosses are no monsters, trying to get the last ounce of work out of him for the least amount of pay. but that they are usually fine men who have succeeded through hard work and who want to do the right thing. He learns that folks are not any harder to get along with in one place than anothers. and that the getting along depends about ninety-eight percent on his own behavior 184 THE 1977-78 MEMBERS OF STUDENT COUNCIL HOPE THE ACTIVITIES WE HAVE SPONSORED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH MANY LASTING MEMORIES. Department Mr. Harper Janitorial Staff Parents of the Editors Mr. Rand Mr. Redmond Al Running Melba Sahlin Forest Lake Times This has been quite a year for us. Beginning with the supplement in the spring of 1977 through the completion of our FORESTER during the winter of 1978, hard working editors grew to understand and appreciate the effort needed to preserve some valuable memories of FLHS. Our many hectic deadlines and hard work were rewarded in May when we saw our finished product — the 1978 FORESTER. We, as editors, would like to thank our devoted staff, a staff that could be counted on even until 3:30 a.m. to complete the necessary work for deadlines. Also, thanks to Mrs. Onell who could always be counted on for additional help. We’d especially like to thank our advisor, Mrs. Redmond, for all the help and encouragement she gave us. Besides having a family of her own, she took on the added responsibility to see that all staff efforts were coordinated. Some memories that we, the editors, will always remember and cherish are: Kay, you dummy . .. Who has the ladder? . .. hitting every eating place in Forest Lake . . . late nights, early mornings . . . candle lit dinner. . . sudden deadlines ... typing and retyping ... someday we’ll paint the room . . . Mary Kay thinking we had to try to be dumb . . . Becky’s marshmallows . .. Cindy’s coffee, tea, and hot chocolate .. . Marya’s cupids . . . Mary Kay’s busy schedule . . . our primary group . . . Mrs. Redmond’s new wardrobe . . . laughing and crying . .. running through the dark halls of FLHS . . . rollercoasters? . . . Valley Fair. . . liquid paper. . . layouts, photos, and copies . . . Thanks- giving morning . . . how wide is copy? ... 3:30 a.m. We completed our book with the hope that you, the students of FLHS, will find it to be a good representation of 1977-1978. Editor’s Notes 199 • Soft murmers a friendly smile memories tucked away for awhile. All stored away in a little space taken out later in a quiet place. To remember the times of joy and sorrow To relive those times as well as tomorrow . . . Yvonne Boyes Kris VanNispen
