1977 Forester Forest Lake High School Forest Lake, Minnesota Volume 39 ■■ “Life is a journey, not a destination.” We travel through many experiences that prove to be rewarding or disappointing, but it is from these experiences that we learn to become uniquely independent and are able to cope with what lies ahead. On our journey through life, we are exposed to good and bad, but we must determine for ourselves what is right. Although school may seem to be an endless journey in itself, it is actually only a very small Journeys . . In Participation In Academics In Competition In Activities In Friendship In Finances ABOVE. Different Drummer Marching music initiated the band for the coming year. New music was brought out and new styles were set as the marching band went under the direction of Paul Red- mond. A pre-game show was seen before every home football game. Incorporating the talents of the flag corps, twirlers and cheerleaders, homecoming halftime proved to be a success. Throughout the year the pep band per- formed at athletic events. Under the direction of Rollin Nelson, the concert band performed the winter concert on December 18th. In preparation for the concert, many long afternoons were spent playing the endless notes of “Tacotta Marziale.” “Fingal’s Cave” will never be the same without Rick Schroeder and his magic sax. And “What I Did For Love” with Dan Merrill playing a trumpet solo? Varsity and rang- er band started serious literature and also playing for the winter concert. With new ideas from Paul Redmond and the experience of Rollin Nelson, the band had a success- ful year. ABOVE. CONCERT BAND. TOP ROW: Director R Nelson. Ron Demarais. Doug Smith, Jim Plain. With the high horse-like and majestic step, the coronation procession was proudly executed. Homecom- ing halftime show was a success with the help of Mrs. Onell, revived enthusiasm, new costumes, and, once again, working with the cheerleaders. Especially their fea- ture routine “Free Ride ; smiles and all even if a mistake was made. The majorettes also performed in pre-game shows during the football season. Being there are only the three senior majorettes left and because of the lack of participation, there may be no future majorettes. Exhibiting poise and nerve, Jay Voelker executed a front handspring beginning the homecoming halftime show. Having done this without falling. Jay could stop worrying about grass stains. Beautifying the FLHS homecoming week with color, and dignity, the 26 member flag corps and captain, Nancy Nelson, underwent months of practice to prepare for the year’s events. Taking part in coronation, the homecom- ing parade, and doing a drill to “Rhapsody in Blue” during the halftime show, the corps also marched in several parades. Painting their cupboards was an experience for all and will never be forgotten. BELOW. MAJORETTES: Brenda Houle. Corliss Robinson. Wendi Steely. Flags Major(ettes) 9 TREBLE CHOIR. Amidst the music, cries of “Tone, sopranos!” and “If you're that dull, I’d hate to take you out!” could be heard from director Jim Lindstrom. The choirs took on new organization as the girls' choirs split into treble choir and introduction to choir. The choirs presented Christ- mas and spring concerts in December and April respec- tively. The mixed choir was off to an early start, perform- ing a double choir concert with the New Richmond choir in October. Mezzmora, a group of 16 members from mixed choir, made various appearances at local events. The coming of spring saw the choir busy with state-re- gional contests, one individual and one mass choir. Office Aides “Rescue” Overworked Secretaries There are several small tasks around the school that were taken care of by students who volunteered (out of the goodness of their hearts) to work in the offices during their study halls. Library aides assisted the librarian by shelving books, helping students find what they were looking for, and checking out magazines. Office aides helped the secretaries by answering phones and doing odd jobs. Audio-visual aides proved useful in operating and taking care of projectors and other equipment. Aides in the guidance office delivered notices to students for counselor appointments and helped organize college ma- terials. All of these kindhearted souls helped to keep these offices running smoothly and made a great contri- bution to FLHS. ABOVE, GUIDANCE AIDES. BACK ROW: Penny Bathurst, Mary Dittmar. Prolifique Roars Again Prolifique, the literary magazine that allows students to have their poems, stories, artwork, and pictures pub- lished, has tried a new idea this year. Instead of selling one issue at the end of the year, the staff has decided to produce three issues, fall, winter, and spring, and give them away to students. The staff, headed by Ms. Kaye Casey, made money by going out and getting patrons from Forest Lake to sponsor them and by selling suckers at lunch periods. Many of the old staff worked hard this year, but there was an overwhelming amount of sopho- more enthusiasm. The Forest Lake Office Education Association (FLOEA) headed By Jack Buys, has once again captured the inter- est of students by selling Kathryn Beich candy during all lunches throughout the year. President Ronald Demar- ais, aided by other officers, helped to organize other members in working towards their future ambitions. FLOEA BACK ROW: Jack Buys. Ron Demaris. Judy Anderson. Class representatives Karen Shalander, Debbie Nieder- korn, and Teri Lindstrom worked together with their ad- viser, Mrs. Teichner, and over 70 students to promote school spirit throughout the year. To distinguish pep club members, gold sweaters were purchased and chevrons were made available, according to the number of years a member participated. The pep club also sold pom-pons, and worked hand-in-hand with the cheerleaders in mak- ing announcements and posters for the teams and fans throughout the year. Sitting by the gates of the football field, lettermen sold stadium cushions to raise money. Providing entertain- ment for the Forest Lake audiences, the Harlem Diplo- mats, a basketball team from Canada, played the Forest Lake faculty and Jaycees. Bob Dettmer and Rick Ander- son were the advisors for the Lettermen, with Bart Reh- bein as president, Andy Niemczyk as vice-president, and Bob Schmidt as secretary and treasurer. Initiation was held in both the fall and winter. Taking up trays, reciting poetry, and obeying the lettermen’s every command were the initiates duties. The lettermen sponsored a pol- ka to begin Christmas vacation and to celebrate a basket- ball victory. Representing all sports, the lettermen added a lot to FLHS. PEP CLUB. BACK ROW: Nancy Kubes. The club’s goal is to build skills in the areas of personal growth, vocational planning, family commitment and community involvement. Experience in these areas was gained through numerous projects in school and Forest Lake. The Future Farmers of America is also a goal oriented organization. Major objectives were met through individual, school and community projects. Popular and prosperous, these included the Christmas tree sales, flower promotions and the treasure hunt during FFA Week. In- terscholastic and state fair competi- tion netted many awards for the chapter. FFA. BACK ROW: Bob Volinsky. Elizabeth Beier. Todd Pottsmith, Tim Herges. Sue Manthey. Cathy Rydeen. Julie Reed. Declamation Program Nets Medals, Trophies Under the direction of Mdme. Sagstuen, the French club again participated in a busy year. With an increase in membership, the group held their traditional activities. Among the most popular were taking field trips, learning to make crepes, eating out at a French restaurant, and giving skits. Mr. Franzen's Spanish club also experienced growth in its membership. Emphasizing cultural activities, the group saw a fairly calm year. In an effort to promote school spirit they staged colorful skits. Typical winter weather ruined plans for their roller skating party. Medals, trophies, and A-ratings were symbolic of decla- mation's success. With the return of Ms. Howe, the group had entrants in all categories and put in a long season. Their talents consistently proved that FLHS has a strong, respectable speech program that produces winners. SPANISH CLUB. AFS is basically a program in which countries can exchange their students. Through AFS we are able to gain a much broader insight of the cultures and government of different countries. Our chapter advi- sor was N. Sagstuen. We have had the opportunity to have a foreign exchange student in our school, Connie Von Breeman, from Holland. We hope she enjoyed her stay in the U.S. When the first nips of winter hit the air, Forest Lake ski club slid into action. Before the snow hit the ground they had planned some money making activities. A ski-swap was held in mid-November, the ski club hopes to make this an annual affair. Another fund raiser sponsored by the skiers was a polka dance before Christmas vacation. Every Thursday thereafter the ski club alternated visits between Snowcrest, Trollhaugen, and Wild Mountain. Ski- ers at Forest Lake High are easy to spot in a crowd; they are the only ones who like snow and cold. MATH TUTORS. BACK ROW: Brian Dahl: MIDDLE ROW: Brian Mundt, Kevin Pitcher. Bridget Dolan. The copy staff, under the direction of Judy Keilen, worked late, long hours to complete their writing. Led by Debbi Hudak, the photog- raphy staff worked closely with Johnson Studio and the Forest Lake Times. Creating pleasing and artistic layouts was the job of Renee Briggs and her staff. Helped by Adviser C. Onell, Bonnie Dykhuizen and Robin Wiley worked hard to raise money and meet the rising cost of publication. Announcements and proofreading were two major tasks of efficiency editor Chris Schleising. Cooper- ation in crisis was the key to completion of the book on schedule. Breeze found itself experiencing many of the same prob- lems as Forester. Led by Adviser R. Streater, the compe- tent editors met their deadlines and kept FLHS informed of what was happening. The success of the Breeze can be credited to its editors’ leadership. FORESTER STAFF BACK ROW: Judy Hebert, Steve Havens, Cathy Dykhuizen, Renae Jones, Renae Langland. The week was filled with fun as well as a lot of hard work and dedication from members. Besides the usual activities, a homecoming parade was added. The never-ending smoking issue was again worked on by student council members. Visits to the capital and the presentation of a bill at the state convention of stu- dent councils were headed by Rita Ersfeld. Kris Van Ni- spen and Karen Johnson were elected to the executive council of the capital division. The fall meeting and the spring convention of the division were held at Forest Lake. A week filled with Christmas activities was held the week before Christmas vacation. This year’s student council was one of the most successful ever, and much credit must be given to the five seniors on the executive council: Linda Madsen. Rita Ersfeld, Loral Peterson, Jeff Gauvin, and Dawna Lichtscheidl. This year the tradition of excellence was once again upheld by the Forest Lake High School debate team. Beginning in early October, the debaters argued criminal justice in approximately twenty tournaments, running through early February. This year’s topic was probably the hardest ever, according to coach Ralph Streater. But all participants at FLHS met with success, whether on the novice, jr. varsity or varsity level. One example of the strength of this year’s squad was a weekend in December when the varsity took both first and second at a tourna- ment in Mankato while the novice and junior varsity col- lected their trophies at Bloomington Jefferson. And that is only a fraction of the “hardware” that this year’s team collected. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: John Kelly. Organizing and managing the large fac- ulty and the growing student body kept the adminis- trators busy. Assisted by Ms. Athey and Mr. Moskop. everyday problems and situations were handled well. Attendance, budgets, discipline and supervi- sion are only a few of the responsibilities they met. Community concerns were emphasized in facilitat- ing the programs at FLHS. The six member school board, chaired by Vernon Boettcher, conducted meetings every first and third Monday of each month. Topics concerning the com- munity and the school were discussed with input from interested citizens. Dr. Bernard Bartel, the su- perintendent of the Forest Lake school district, kept a watchful eye over the activities and ideas of the parents and students alike. Together they provided the system under which our district is run. Principal H. Millington ■■■ SCHOOL BOARD, BACK ROW: C. Graf, 0. Wirgau, J. Jergens; FRONT ROW: D. Schmidt, V. Boettcher, R. Homebound instruction, curriculum coordination, fi- nances, community education, and parking lot su- pervision could be classified as the “extras” of dis- trict 831. Not only are students provided with class- room and extra-curricular benefits, they also enjoy a wide variety of special services. Forest Lake is fortu- nate to benefit from them since most school dis- tricts felt a dollar crunch this year. SECRETARIES. BACK: E. Zeller. G. Casey. C. Baxter. M Sahlin. J. Kroska, I. When- ever they vacuumed the carpets, students had to beware of the long, snake-like electrical cords throughout the halls. Still, the custodians were always helpful and gave the school a spotless appearance. Each day our qualified team of cooks provided students with well-balanced meals. Although the menu was varied with many different types of food, many students found it more suitable for throwing. Never-the-less, the cooks al- ways managed to be cheerful and pleasant. This adds book replacement to an already full schedule of keeping order, updating the vertical file and checking for passes. Another change at FLHS in- volved new teacher Carol Wenker, who worked with exceptional students. Her classes moved to the C- wing with hopes of becoming a resource model and hiring a reading specialist. Students again spent many hours working with the guidance counselors, especially adapting to the new class change policy. Maintaining the tradition of helpfulness, Mr. Scofield and Mrs. Frigstad saw many students in the course of a day. Bodiddlers’ Chanting Made Practice “Oh you Ranger men Tough, tough Ranger men Foot- ball is the thing we do Forest lake will win for you l’ll be glad and so will you.'7 This and other “bodiddleys” spirit- ed the Ranger football teams and their fans on to a successful season. Practice, which began in August, was strenuous, but had its light moments. Among these were “break time”, “county fair”, “breakdowns”, and “songs”. A continuous weight-lifting program helped the teams condition and keep in shape. High morale, com- bined with hard work, produced exciting games and many victories. Coach Lautigar commented on the fact that B- squad had a good season, JV a better season, and varsity a great season. Apprehension about joining the North Suburban conference proved to be unwarranted. The team’s record may not be impressive for this year, but the program is looking good for years to come with kids going through the entire hockey program, from pee wees to high school. Many sophomores played this year, which helped Coach Doug Peltier build depth in his team. Helping out in the coaching area was new assistant coach Ken Mikolajczyk, with Mr. Bob Fedderly soloing in B-squad. Before each game the players filled out a sheet indicating what they hoped to accomplish in the upcom- ing game. Wrestling Fan Support Becomes Better In '11 Ranger wrestlers, coached by B. Dettmer, B. Thompson and J. Reiman, began the season preparing for a new conference. Under the strong leadership of tri-captains Randy Kolbow, Andy Niemczyk and Lance Osterbauer the team progressed into a winning season. Part of their success was attributed to the wrestle-off system which kept individuals in condition. The matmen captured the Forest Lake Invitational title. Wrestling fans found an ad- dition to the season. A mat aides club was formed with 40 girls participating. Their major team goal was set for the state tournaments. Dieting sensibly and daily workouts were recommended to the team with this goal in mind. Another goal was to increase fan support. B-SQUAD WRESTLING. BACK ROW: Doug Banta, Jim Schmidt. Joel Buys. To letter in gymnastics, at least 130 points must be accumu- lated during the season. Coached by D. Conley and D. Blasko, the team strove for PMA (Positive Mental Atti- tude). Along with this concept they also stressed the “5 P’s”: practice, pride, persistence, performance, perfec- tion. Beginning practice in early December, the team competed in its first North Suburban Conference meet in January. Despite the tough conference, the girls worked to achieve their individual goals, as well as master the team goals. _ GYMNASTICS. BACK ROW: Coach D. Blasko. Mary Cardinal. Jill Olsen, Lori Lindeberg. At that point they looked forward to playing each team again. Games were played every Tuesday and Thursday night. B-squad action was under the direction of D. Poupard. Speaking of their terrific record, the coach proudly men- tioned the team's consistent improvement and pointed out that losses were by a narrow margin. Fan support of Ranger basketball was good. Players on A- squad, B-squad and junior varsity all appreciated the cheering of anxious fans. J-V coach C. Anderson's efforts were also helpful in A-squad success. Tryouts were held in the spring, with squads being chosen for football, basketball, wrestling, and hockey. With large numbers of talented girls-trying out, it is no wonder that Forest Lake had such an accomplished group leading cheers at both home and away games. Breaking the long winter after Christmas and before Eas- ter was the winter play. “Alice in Wonderland , directed by Ms. D. Jensen, delighted both young and old. The cold weather caused the show to be moved back one week. Not only did Ms. Jensen produce a delightful play, she was also responsible for the set construction, the cos- tumes’ design and production, and management of the publicity. Winter Play Jingle Bell Jubilee 81 Elections, swine flu vaccina- tions, and dry weather found top billing in the news. Other highlights of ’76-77 were the Vikings’ loss at Superbowl XL, gas prices, freeing of an Arab terrorist, and numerous oil spills. These national items were also of significance at the local level. Events outside the school com- munity are important in deter- mining which roads we follow. Community influence and sup- port could be felt in all areas. Minimum graduation require- ments became a popular item of concern and discussion. 3f V Ford Loses Election, Carter Assumes Office FRIENDSHIP As the journey continues, day to day encounters! with our fellow travelers effects on each of us. rk unaware of them, the between students, dihinistrators, and sup- 1 aff encourage our indi- Seniors Hesitant To Leave Halls of FLHS All good things must come to an end. Not all seniors felt this way about the twelve years of schooling they put in, but by the time June third rolled around, they did have some memories. August 26 brought the class of '77 together again, this time as illustri- ous seniors. Class enthusiasm toward activities first showed up during homecoming week. After many hours of hard work the class succeeded in creating a float for the homecoming parade. And, at the pow- der puff, senior power proved unfailing as our girls defeated the junior girls. The class was kept busy making decisions. Post high school planning, includ- ed for some, taking the American College Tests, registering for scholarships, and applying to various institutions for advanced education. The class of 77’s final fling was senior week. Seniors proved to be merciless slave owners, remembering the agony they suffered the year before. All too soon it was time to order graduation announcements, get mea- sured for caps and gowns, and pick up their diplo- mas. Gwen Philippi stops at her locker during busy passing time. 2. Juniors capture first place in homecoming parade. Jr. Float Highlights '77 Homecoming Parade The junior class for 1976-77 found themselves the “in-betweens of Forest Lake High Schol. Halfway through their high school journey, they began pre- paring for what was to come, whether it be college, vocational-technical school, or immediate employ- ment. Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests were taken in the fall, and other tests such as the Strong- Campbell Interest Survey were offered during the year. But the junior class found time to explore the social side of FLHS as well. After losing a close pow- derpuff football game to the invincible senior girls during homecoming week, the juniors cameback to capture the prize for best float in the first annual Homecoming parade. Late fall and the junior class brought Dogpatch U.S.A. to FLHS once again, giving the courageous females a chance to catch their L’il Abner and drag him to the Sadie Hawkins dance. The juniors went through what every class eventual- ly experiences and bowed to the seniors on slave day. But those bad times were forgotten as the juniors said a last farewell to the class of 77 with the Junior-Senior Prom in May. A wide vari- ety of sports and activities enabled them to make new friends and dis- cover new abilities while having fun. The class of '77 added to the thrill and excitement of home games by supporting the Rangers with their school spirit. A new adviser and new class officers kindled this spirit and got their class involved in all aspects of school life. They also worked hard to accept new responsibilities as they settled into the mainstream of FLHS. Their contributions were felt in all aspects of student life. Aca- demically they participated in the required courses and added spark to the elective program. 1. Sophomore contributions expand homecoming activities. 2. Year- book dance attracts anxious sophomores. 3. While the editors of the 1977 Forest- er worked diligently to produce the book itself, the business managers and their staff carried out many tasks to raise money to cover the costs of producing the book. To cov- er these expenses, selling space for ads and patrons, promoting the yearbook, and running the conces- sion stand were among the jobs they completed. Without the hard work of the business staff, the financial aspect of the book would have been a disaster. His passing leaves memories of an unselfish, giving person without whom the Forester could not have existed. Upon his death, his secretaries did an unbelievable job of carrying on his work. In his journey he provided unlimited photo service to our yearbook at FLHS. As we think of the selfless example he set we say “thank you” and dedicate the 1976-77 Forester to him. 158 Memorial Dedicated Staff EDITORS: Judy Keilen, Copy Renee Briggs, Layout Mary Kay Morley, Assistant Debbi Hudak, Photography Cindy Perrault, Assistant Robin Wiley, Business Bonnie Dykhulzen, Business Chris Schleising, Efficiency Mary Jo Jenson, Assistant DEVOTED STAFFS: Copy: Barb Holl Dawna Lichtscheidl Linda Madsen Tom Pareigat Loral Peterson Jackie Royer Photography: Lynn Lindberg Kitty Mattson Marya Mattson Mark Palas Rick Schroeder Cindy Winberg Layout: Linda Bowker Lori Branjord Monica Doepner A Special Thanks To: Johnson Photography Cliff Buchan Howard Lestrud Charlene Petrella Al Larson Melba Sahlin Mr. Harper, concessions Mrs. Onell, adviser Breeze Layout, continued: Lori Florhaug Nancy Kubes Kitty Mattson Wendi Steely Candy Weeks Business: Bridget Dolan Cathy Dykhuizen Debbie Frederickson Steve Havens Renea Jones Cindy Nast Mary Beth Ostrand Corliss Robinson Chris Schleising Karen Shalander Betsy Webb By the time mid-February break ar- rived, editors were convinced we were on a “bad trip”. The pressure and chilling temperatures of working late on deadlines were only a portion of our journey. Towards May, when our hard work would materialize as a finished product, we will have forgot- ten the hectic moments. As 1976-77 progressed, we shared good times and collected many memories. As usual deadlines seemed insurmount- able, but a few dedicated staff could be counted on every time. Among the most cherished will be memo- ries of “flying pictures” ... Lola LaRoux ... tacos in C126 . .. funny furnaces ... missing layouts ... lost pictures ... and melted ice cream. We want to especially thank the cus- todians for their patience, and the teachers for their cooperation. Editor's Notes 159
